View Full Version : Irvin and T.O.
Now i understand that neither of these two are exactly Niner Favorites but it doesn't matter to me :fishing:
Watching NFL network today they showed a program called BIRDS AND 'BOYS
which was about the Eagles and Cowboys, In it they talked about and to both Irvin and T.O.
Now off the Field Irvin's life towards the end of his career wasn't a shining moment but watching the tenacity in which he played and in the way him and Emmitt bonded and supported each other made me admire how much of a competitor and good teammate Irvin really was.
Now in Regards to T.O., yes the two are best friends and share alot of the same style in regards to their play. Watching the clips and even hearing BY talk about how T.O. used to be and how he seldom said anything in practice and games and stuff like that but when he did in the locker room you took notice and in regards to the come back against NYG T.O.'s talk was what SF needed. In watching and hearing that it seems to me that T.O. tried to be alot like Irvin but some where down the road he lost track of all that Irvin did and was trying to help him do and became obnoxious.
Part of watching this makes me think there's hope for T.O. but reality hits and i'm sure there's no hope and i'm left just wishing he'd SHUT UP AND PLAY
But in the end of that it's odd that you could tell Irvin was the role model for T.O. too bad the niners didn't have that "emmitt" type of player to really be there to support T.O. but also keep him grounded...

It's too bad T.O. didn't have a "Aikman" type Qb to throw him the ball, Alvin Harper and K. Martin to line up opposite him, a "Novacek" type at TE to clear out, and a huge massive O-line to pass block and give the QB time to deliver those many passes Michael caught.

T.O.'s a hopeless case, imo. I can't see how a person that pawns off selfishness for competitiveness can change. I love to watch him play, but I've lost all respect for him.

i agree , when he first came to the 49ers he was ok but in the later years he turned into a big baby. i wonder how long before the cowboys kick him out.:cowboy:

Cowboys are just going for the quick fix like a two year fling for a ring, then all hell breaks loose and Parcells leaves and suddenly the niners have 8 rings...it could happen

that was also around the time Jerry and Steve had left.
So again having that "emmitt" type of player may have helped him.
But again at this point it's probably too late.
Your right when TO had veteran super stars like Young and Rice he fell into line and was a true professional, but when the team was in transition and rebuilding the team needed TO to be a leader and that never happened. Even though Garcia and TO made a good combination TO was threatened about the money Garcia was getting and began berating the OC and Garcia when he didn't get enough touches.
IMO he felt like he was bigger than the team and when we began to lose IMO he couldn't handle it. He was also complaining about a new contract which if he kept his mouth shut he would have gotten. But in comparing these to you have to acknowledge the problems TO had as a child and I think that contributes to his false me against the world persona. I just think TO would have blown up eventually no matter the circumstance.

TO is the man, stop flaming him because Niner fans are bitter. He's a great football player, but he's also a horrible human being. That's what we've been saying. Are you saying you disagree?

i do disagree, how can you say he is a horrible human being??? i can see someone saying he is a bad teammate or selfish but what goes on on the field doesn't show the make-up of a man. TO is a player that arranges get-togethers for the whole team to hang out at events such as bowling and does charities like alot of other players. i just dont think you can say he is a horrible human being because some dumb arguments with a FO or QB.
Well your are treating what TO has done rather lightly i believe. I mean the guy is a jerk. He didn't just have a few arguments, he destroyed entire teams. First the 49ers and then the eagles. He is a cancer in the locker room, and will only serve to distract other players from what they should be focusing on. He wasn't always this way, but he is this way now, and if you bring him in to your organization it is very likely that within a year if not 2 he will be acting out, destryoing the locker room and causing trouble. Thus i can't wait for him to get in his first fight w/ drewbledsoe as it will just be the beggining of the end for the cowboys playoff hopes. I mean bledsoes immobile drop back style is just asking for some T.O. complaints, and i just love to see the cowboys loose :nana: . there is a reason he has no signing bonus to speak of and has been signed to what many in the media have called a series of 1 year deals. Is he still insanely talented at the receiving position sure , but the minute he begins to drop off a bit his career is over b/c no one wants to put up w/ the problems / personality that is Mr. Terrible Owens.

Bitter?
I am not bitter.
Why should I be bitter?
Is it for being 5-0 in Super Bowls?
Is it for having the best ever QB and WR ever on our team?
Oh, it is for letting T.O. go who has never won a ring.
He is a great player but also brings along too much drama.
Too bad it didn't work out. Best of luck T.O.

How do you figure?
Owens
-hasn't gotten any DUIs (doesn't even drink during the season)
-hasn't been convicted of obstruction of justice in a murder case
-hasn't been accused of murder
-hasn't tested positive for drugs
-hasn't been accused or convicted of possessing or selling drugs
-hasn't been accused or convicted of spousal abuse/domestic violence
-hasn't been accused of punching any children seeking autographs
-to my knowledge, has had no arrests or legal trouble in general
There are guys who are currently playing in the NFL who fit the bill on one or several of the above counts. And the guy does have a charity and has testified before Congress in support of more funding for Alzheimer's
Certainly Owens may be arrogant, and he may be an awful teammate, but there's more to being a good human being than what happens the locker room. I think it's ridiculous how much one person is villainized for being a loudmouth and a lousy teammate, while actual criminals and REAL scum are playing in the NFL and no one seems to mind. :nolisten:

He's a great football player, but he's also a horrible human being. That's what we've been saying. Are you saying you disagree? How many women has he beaten? How many DUI's? How many people has he killed? How many drugs has he dealt? How much legal trouble has he gotten into? I guess having a bad attitude means more to fans than what the players are doing off the field.
EDIT: guy above said it better

That's always been my opinion. When the 49ers rose from the ashes in 2001, Owens wasn't part of a star studded bunch like early in his career. He was easily the most recognizable player on the team and the media fed an ego that was once kept in check by respect for older guys like Jerry, Steve, Ken Norton, Merton Hanks etc...
