Nolan is a fan of the "throwback" uniforms that the 49ers wore Sunday when they beat the Vikings, and he wouldn't mind seeing them become a weekly fixture.
But league rules stipulate a lengthy advance notice for a uniform change. Nolan said even if owner John York and the NFL gave their blessing, the earliest they could be worn regularly by the team would be in 2008 season.
Nolan first developed an appreciation for the stylishness of the uniform as a ballboy for his father, former 49ers coach **** Nolan.
"It's a great uniform," said Nolan. "I know our players really like the uniform and I kind of like it, too. Not just because I grew up with it. I just like that red. But obviously, that's a John York decision as much as anybody's, if he likes it."
The 49ers did improve to 2-0 under Nolan when they wear the throwback uniform. They beat Tampa Bay last October while wearing the traditional duds.
The 49ers are scheduled to wear the throwback uniforms one more time this season, Dec. 24, against Arizona.
at least we get to wear them one more time against the Cardinals....Revenge!:towel:

I personally like the unifiorms we already have and only wearing the throwbacks on special occaisions but hey whatever helps these guys win- go niners! (although this does kinda remind me of the 97' season I think it was when George Seifert made the team wear the throwbacks because they kept winning- anyone else remember that?)

I like the new ones, the old ones look like they belong in the 80's...hmmm. I wonder why.

It was 94 and Seifert is ridiculously superstitious.
Personally, I hate the old uni's. If a uniform having the old uiniform is what is takes for us to win, then that in itself is pretty sad.
The old unis are only "awesome" because we wear them on special occasions. I remember when we first busted out the new helmets with the updated logo, I was all psyched. I was sick of those plain old red and white jerseys. Now, I'm sick of the new ones. But I realize that I only like the old ones because they're worn on special occasions.
I say, bring in something new. Leave the old ones for the greatest team in our history. Bring in the old bright red, and the gold pants, but change it up from the throwbacks. Maybe have some gold on the throwback jerseys; like where the strips are on the arms. Maybe make the top and bottome stripe have gold outline, or make the it just have the strips like on the pants.

Im tellin ya we need to wear Black jerseys with red numbers outlined with white and gold. Tell me that wouldnt be tight and I'll call you a fool....but not to your face though. On those same jerseys we need to have Golden pick axes on the sleeves

Then we would have to convince the other team to wear their "white" jersies. Unless you mean for us to wear the white throwbacks on the road

I'm obsessed with the classic uniforms. We must wear these, and not just 2 times a year. Those are our real uniforms. We've been wearing alternate unis for the last 10 years.
Dark jerseys suck in 100 degree weather. Why would our team wear black jerseys?
Dynastic

Answer: they wouldn't.
Black uniforms are for kids who want to look "kewl." Wearing black would be the ultimate poser thing to do for this proud franchise.

It could be a possibility as the Eagles and Ravens (when Nolan was there) did introduce an alternate black jersey. If they did, it might look something like this below.
http://49ers.com/nm_files/Image/players/Alex%20Smith/turnalexsub.jpg
Or the 49ers could consider what the Florida State Seminoles recently wore in a game this season.

The 94 Superbowl season.
Those were the throwbacks from 1957. The pants were white and the striping and numbers were a little different from the later 70s and 80s version. If they went back to a previous uniform permanently, I kind of prefer the 1957 one.
During the 80s, a lot of people didn't care for the Niners uniforms - especially the gold pants. But that was before their winning ways became "nostalgia".

I personally loved the Uni's they wore during the 94 Superbowl year. I remember we wore the regular Uni's vs Philly and got slaughtered at home and that was it for those...In fact i think the 2 games we lost that yr to philly and KC we wore the regular jerseys and we won all the rest in the old school!

I like the current Niners unis. The only thing I'd do is go back to the 80s era shade of red. Everything else is fine as is.

The old unis are nice and nostalgic, but should be left to a "once a year" special occassion.
The newer uniforms look so much better. I love the new uniforms.

precisely why people like the classic colors better, we, just like about every highschool/college/nfl team across the country found some way to be "trendy" and add some "k00l" black to our unis. We followed the trend everybody else did. I didnt like it from day one, because I knew why we were doing it (everybody else was) and I had hoped that we would be smarter to fall for it, but I guess not.

I liked seeing the throwbacks on sunday. But the only thing I would like them to bring back on a full time basis from that uni is the grey facemask and the red, white, red stripes on the helmets and pants. Keep the current jerseys and gold pants. Break out the 80's throwbacks once or twice a year.

Hold on, maybe I'm reading into this wrong, but is he talking about making it a permanent thing, going back to the old uniforms, or does he mean getting permission to use them as alternate jerseys once in awhile?

They already use them as alternate uniforms. He's talking about returning to them as the team's regular uniforms.

i also think if we were to return to the old uniforms....the uniforms would start to get old.....hahah
everyone today has new and improved jerseys.....we would be stuck in the 80's again........
only if we could alternate between the two throughout the season

I've never been a real big fan of the current uniforms. The red has always been off to me and the uniform is just to "busy". Infact, I'm not a big fan of the majority of the uniform changes over the past few years (Philly, Buffalo, Seattle, Denver, Minnesota, Atlanta (minus the red uniforms, but their 80's red uniforms were better and I hated it when they switched to the black uniforms in 91), New York Giants etc). The only teams I like are Tampa Bay's (but it wasn't hard to improve over what they had) and the Jets (again, not to hard to improve).

i always thought the new uniforms...cardinal red and gold were better colors than the old iniforms plain red and tan...
each uniform suits the era it was/ is in....
Nolan also said the players liked them better because the fabric was more comfortable.

Easy solution. use the fabric from the old jerseys and the red. The rest keep it the way it is now.

but wouldnt it be made by a different company.....that means the company who makes the old uniforms would have to make all new uniforms out of the same thread used on the throwbacks.....Do it!

I like those 94 Super Bowl ones also. one's too. Maybe the Niners can go back to the classic 80's on a regular basis and use those other 50's style throwbacks on special occasions.

A little tidbit from Matt Maiocco on this subject: http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com
On Wednesday afternoon, I spoke to John York for several minutes on the practice field. I told him what coach Mike Nolan said the other day on the subject of the 49ers changing back to their old uniform style.
When I reminded York that Nolan said the decision would be up to the owner. York told me that the decision was ultimately up to the fans. If they wanted it, they would get it, he said.

thanks for posting that matt maiocco quote...i was going to do the same!
i'm just wondering HOW york will "leave it up to the fans"...
will he take a poll on the website?
maybe send out mailers to season ticket holders??
all i know is that debartolo didn't consult the fans on the uniform change back in '96...
i don't know how many people can remember when debartolo had the audacity to try to change the helmet logo to that ugly "49ers" logo back in the early 90's (1992 or 1993 if i recall).
it looked like something out of the arena league...:mouthclosed:
i remember they had a press conference in the offseason presenting the new helmet and logo.
the public backlash was so bad that they changed it back within a few days.
part of the reason the fans hated it was because the "SF" was gone, which might mean debartolo was thinking of moving the team.
anywayZ...in 1996 offseason, when he decided to change the uniforms and colors to the ugly things we see today, they didn't have a press conference.
i specifically remember it mentioned in a small blurb in the chronicle...it was put on display at a trade show in FLORIDA of all places.
pretty slick way to avoid the public backlash...i was more pissed that they changed the colors from "SCARLETT red and gold" to the current "CARDINAL red and gold".
that current "cardinal" red is sort of an ugly cross between the washington redskins and arizona cardinals red.
these are the SF 49ers...at the very LEAST, bring back the old colors!!!
(and get rid of the goofy striped socks we saw last sunday...a little too cheezy)

I agree, I am VERY CURIOUS to see how the 49ers will solicit the fan's feedback to a move back to the older uniforms, a modified version, or even something new. I would absolutely love to be a part of any discussion or focus group with the team on this matter.
