I'd be pissed if Dilfer wore #8. I know the number isn't retired yet...but noone should wear it until it is!!

If Dolfer wore #8 he'd get booed the first time he stepped on the field.

Either that or BY would pound him in practice until he requested another number...:surrender:

That would be like Bryant coming in and wearing # 80. It just wont happen. No one will ever don an 8,16,42, or 80 again. Hopefully, if all works out to plan, #11 will be off the table as well.

That would be... Not popular or right... I'd guess he'll be #18 if he can get Otis Amey to give it up. Because 12 & 16 are also retired and the rest of the teens are in use.

If the 49ers release Smith, they're done for a long time (Salary Cap).

He meant #11 would be retired due to Smith becoming a HoFer....not being released....

Excuse my ignorance, but who wore #12? Y.A. Tittle? Hugh Mac?

Maybe Trent can be 13 since he's played 13 seasons now. Or did we retire that # for Tim Rattay induction into the hall of shame.

Youngs #8 jersey is good as retired. Last season the 'niners had a special Hall of Fame ceremony for Steve Young during a game at halftime. He got the Hall of Fame ring there also.

What are his options? 7! Or buy a number!

He'll probably buy Lee's, but then we'd have to start a "What number will Andy Lee be wearing?" thread.

John Brodie. Tittle was #14. Montana #16. I think Spurrier was #11 before Smith. DeBerg was #17. Guy Benjamin might have worn #4 at one time, but I'm a little fuzzy on that. And, if I remember right, Matt Cavenaugh was #6.

Heisman trophy winner, big program winner, blah, blah, blah. Weak arm, couldn't do it. Been there, done that - his name was Steve Spurrier.

The WCO? Came from Cincinatti as Bill Walsh learned most of it from Paul Brown, one of the greatest innovators in pro-football history. Doesn't make Walsh less of a coach - he did a great job. But he stood on the shoulders of a giant.

I belive last year the Niners said they would retire Steve Young's #8 this season. This was at the game where Steve got his HOF ring. I could see them doing it at one of three games, the Vikings, Chargers, or Packers.

#8 is hallowed territory in Niner lore. Dilfer knows that. There's absolutely no way he'll have that number this year.

The 49ers have already announced that Steve Youngs Jersey will be retired sometime this year. Trent Dilfer cannot wear number 8 because the Niners will be retiring the number officially. Can't wait until number 80 is retired.

#16 was not retired untill a few years after Joe Montana retired, and no one else wore it. Same for #87. #80 is also not retired, but nobody has worn it on the 49ers since Rice left. Nobody will wear #8. Nobody has since 1998, have they? This is nothin to worry about.

If Dilfer wore Young's number I wouldn't be suprised to see the fans hold him down as Steve young kicks the ish out of him.

But it wouldn't ever happen, I'm sure Dilfer would respect Young too much to ever do that, also the 49ers organization wouldn't ever allow it.

Dilfer has never been a good quarter back but he could teach Alex Smith some things about the game of quarter backing and football in the NFL because Dilfer has gone to the pro bowl and he has a super bowl ring also. The move to get Dilfer is not an exciting move but we did not lose much in trading Dorsey and if smith goes down Dilfer is actually an up grade at quarterback. I am just judging Alex Smith on his last years play. I hope he is working hard on his game this off season because he has a great arm, he can scramble nicely and if he can pan out to be a good quarterback then the niners will have a great future.

If Dilfer gets #8 I will be upset. But after last year with the way we treated Rice we better not let anyone take his #, or I will lose a lot of respect for our organization. Rice is the BEST PLAYER REGARDLESS OF POSITION OF ALL TIME,and if we let some other player use his # I will honestly turn my back on the franchise untill they make it right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:nonono:

I think some people's passion is getting out of hand before knowing which # Dilfer will wear. I'm sure he will be given a number that is available (there aren't many, especially due to TC recruits), and will NOT be given a # that was worn by any of our present or future HOF guys (Montana, Young, Rice).

Give the 49ers Organization some credit for wisdom and common sense!:towel: :sflogo: :yahoo:

Guy Benjamin wore #7.

That's why I said 'might.' He was a tough one to remember and I could only picture it as being angular and single digit in my minds eye. I was also trying to remember Scott Bull's number, but sometimes I can't remember his name... (Which is a good thing.)

Oh, and thank you.

What way did they treat Jerry last year? He never turned in is retirement paper work to the NFL. I agree Jerry should get a one day contract and retire as a SF 49ers. Dr. York was walking in the parking lot at one of the Arizona game last year and people asked him that question. He said we (as in the 49ers) will sign him to a retirement contract when Jerry is ready. My Mom is a big Jerry Rice fan and she watched him on the dance show and Jerry trained for it at the 49ers facilities. I think Jerry still wants to play that is why the paper work has not been turned in.
