i lov ethe diea that we would get a new stadium and such, i want to make sure i got out there before they leave the current one. But i dont like the idea of leaving SF. i know other teams dont have their staidums in their cities, but thats what makes us so special. is there some way we can expand and uild a new stadium next to the old one and play in the old one untill the new on gets built. i want to stay in SF. i cant imagine going away from SF, because once its gone, it will never come back.
PS. driving time and miles, how far is santa clara from SF for anyone who lives there?

i started out upset this morning when i heard the news, i was at work and received a text with the news. i wasn't able to read why. i was pissed! onc ei got home and read why, i am less pissed of, maybe it's because i am on the east coast and i will never get to SF to watch a niner game. as long as the name doesn't change i will be happy. if they move, that means another city is willing to put up some money to get them there and hopefully that means more local support from fans.
now i have read about why, i say good.

The SF residents should be pissed, as well as those living up north. But the majority of the fans are either happy or they don't mind it.

Where do you live? Do you have any clue when it comes to the geography of the San Francisco Bay Area? Perhaps you're one of the folks that calls San Francisco ----- "frisco".
Relax ----- Santa Clara is in the South Bay - the South San Francisco Bay! They will still be the San Francisco 49ers, but there will be a new stadium in which we don't have to contend with some of the sickest crappers in the western U.S.

you do realize if we went ot LA, there would be outrage. no offense, but were a good team when it comes to filling the seats. every time i see a 49er game at home, the seats are all filled. if ur gunna mvoe a team to LA, move a team that doest have big fan base. not the 49ers who have along history and large fan base.

Lets wait to see what happens. If York moves the team to LA then it was for the money. If he moves the team to Santa Clara then it was for the fans. The same crap happened in seattle until Paul Allen decided to buy the team.

READ my response - I answered your inane question thoroughly. Grab a road atlas next time. Since you have family out here, maybe you want to familiarize yourself with the region so you can get from the airport to their pad. Santa Clara is 40 miles from San Francisco - not all that far.

Mayor Newsome said not so fast. The 49ers lease will expire after the 2008 season. If he wants to play hardball, the 49ers will have to find a place to play if the new stadium cannot be built by 2008 (of course it won't).
Does this mean SF can save that 100 mil that was promised to the team? Is Santa Clara supposed to make up the difference? When they presented the stadium layout earlier this year, knowing all along it was intended for Santa Clara (as a backup plan then). Nolan mentioned after the Chicago game how the structure of the team has improved and function ing well with Lisa Lang in charge of building the new stadium. Is that what he was referring to?
As for myself, I usually take the Muni Ball Park Express and be at the Stick in 45 minutes. Maybe I'll just watch TV from home after the move because I am sure I'll lose my seat and some kind of PSL will be needed for the new stadium.

I am thrilled they are remaining in the BayArea. Indeed there is a good reason to support this, that is because they get a new stadium out of it. I'd been ticked if they decided to move to the Southern half of the state. All hell would have been let loose in Santa Clara if we had to wait every four years to see our Niners in games against the Raiders.
Personally I would have loved to see them move further north to Sacramento. Give the Capital an NFL team so we don't have to watch the basketball choke Kings every year with out some sort of change of pace.

Maybe i'm one of the few who hates it when an organization does that you should always bare the name of the city you play for, if you don't it just seem like your ashamed of the city you play for (unless there is a good reason like the New Orleans Hornets who moved to Oklahoma City but even they are using Oklahoma City Hornets jerseys).

Unfortunately "the city by the bay" is a huge headache full of red tape and no real estate. The mayor wants the Niners to stay because he doesn't want to be the guy who ran the Niners out of town.
I was born at UCSF medical center in 1977, I lived in the east bay for the first 14 years of my life, I've been watching the Niners play for as long as I can remember. If moving to Santa Clara will enable the team to spend money more wisely and provide fans with a better experience I could care less where in the bay the team moves.
The only thing that bothers me are people that don't care if the Niners moved out of the bay. I consider myself a diehard niner fan, what you're describing is a purest. As far as I'm concerned the benefits far outweigh the footnote of remaining in the city limits.

I am not the least upset about the team going to Santa Clara.
It's not far, a lot of so called "San Francisco" events get held at Shoreline amphitheater and other peninsula locations. The team is already based in Santa Clara, and has been for years and years.

Im glad that the team is moving. My parents had season tickets when I was younger. I know what it feels like to have to drive through the middle of the ghetto on gameday. There is nothing like the smell of urine all over potholes in the street......people charging to park in the driveway......crack rocks be tossed your way as if they were skittles.....
And now a few words for the people of the once great city but now waste dump that they call the bay.......BLAME YOURSELF.....you let your city go to waste....football on the High School level is in trouble.....and yeah It's not a good ideal to help the poor people and give them jobs and even a few places to shop....no you would rather have them steal from you and sell drugs on the corner....but you know the trend of putting stadiums in the Ghetto is over.....we just move them to the upscale area's....hey we even might have a few soldout games when there done.....you know the internet guys have alot of money to spend and alot of luxury boxes that they can fill up......
See it all makes since....while your town was to busy posting rainbow flags down market the rest of the world was building stadiums......

This is all the city of San Francisco's fault. Why should the 49ers want to stay in SF?
THERE IS NO REASON. The city government is a joke. They pull the
"we have no money"
"There is no land"
and have most of you fooled. There is plenty of land and there is plenty of money.
It is the same in Oakland.
If the city is not willing to support a pro team then why should the pro team support the city?
Am I pissed at the 49ers, yes but I know that it is not their fault - same with the A's.
There are plenty of drug/bumb filled parks which they could build a stadium on. The people of SF are the ones to blame. They elect these fools and nothing ever gets done. What has chanced in SF over the past 20 years? Nothing because the fools in SF keep electing the same people who get nothing done and when someone wants to get something done they get labeled a radical conservative or a fascist.
Ok sorry about that rant but it is all true - go niners!

Here's the way I see it. The candlestick site, with the mixed development plan is just not going to work. Santa Clara was the backup site and didn't have the major transportation issues of the SF site. Something I found very interesting about John York's recent PC was the fact that the mixed development part of the plan would be located away from the stadium in Santa Clara. It was also mentioned that the majority of road reconstruction was for access to the mixed development plan in SF.
If Newsome can come up with an alternate location for the housing/commercial development to help privately fund the new stadium it would solve a lot of issues, including the ridiculous idea of a 10,000 space parking garage. Either that or he proposes a new site for the stadium.

I’m upset about it. I want them to stay in SF. In fact yesterday when it was posted on the board I flipped out and it took me until this morning to really calm down. I don’t think it’s 100% guarantee as to where the stadium is going. It could go in Santa Clara but it also could just be a scare, so the city of SF steps up. So until I know it’s a 100% done deal I’m not gonna worry anymore because there is nothing any of us can do about it.

All that being said, candlestick point is not a great solution and I can't blame ownership for looking elsewhere in the bay area. I'm disappointed that the team & city of SF were not able to reach an agreement, but I know that John York does want this team back to the glory days and securing a new stadium is of the utmost importance to him. I trust in Coach Nolan as well as Singletary & Norv Turner. I'm really interested in seeing how our team performs in the 2nd half. The 2007 Draft is lookin' strong. IF we could bring in one more offensive weapon the caliber of Calvin Johnson I feel we will have one of the NFL's ELITE offenses in the coming years. I look for us to sign at least 1 big name DEFENSIVE star to help speed along the rebuilding of the D and for a Defensive dominated draft. Our team is headed in the right direction and I remain faithful. THe 6th is coming.

This is better for the 49ers. Candlestick is a dump. Candlestick point is a dump. Building another stadium there would waste the revenue it could bring to and from a truley populated and commercial area.
If this is what it takes to keep the Niners in the SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA then okay! Or would you rather the remote possibility they move to LA?
Niners fans come from all over the bay area. South Bay fans have been driving 45 miles/45 mins every sunday for decades... now fans from San Francisco can make the trip. The Niners are not for San Francisco citizens only... they're for people who live in the San francisco bay Area....
just like the cowboys don't play in dallas... the jets and giants don't play in New York...
On one hand it's sad to see them leave SF.... but face it, San Francisco isn't even the biggest city in the Bay Area anymore. San Jose is larger.
The team will always be the San Francisco 49ers, they will wear the same colors, have the same history, all the same people can go to the games... some people will get their quicker now... some people it'll take a little longer. And now they'll have a beautiful new stadium with fantastic amenities, a non-sketchy neighbor, better transportation options, no parking in a dirt lot on the side of a hill (i'll actually miss that lot) and more money to put back into the team.
This is a good thing. The Bay Area is one metropolitan community. One.
Go niners! :francis: :ninerh: :whip:

It's not WHERE you play; it's HOW you play that's more important. And besides, currently the Stick is in South San Francisco, NOT San Francisco.
Why should we pay such a high premium to clean up the environment for the mixed use of the land--plus have all that construction noise going on during the next 6 years there? And there would not be room for tailgating (you can't tailgate in a parking structure)...
I think it's all for the better. Also, more fans are from the Bay Area than from the City of SF.

Eh? Well what do we suggest do to either Gavin or John? I really do think the mayor can't do anything about it. Our Santa Clara high powers are taking care of it for now, right? As for the name S.F., I also think we don't have to worry about it. 49er fans would really get angry if Gavin won't allow our team to use S.F. I also think that if any 49er fan living outside of the west coast is asked whether it'd be foolish to rename S.F. 49ers to S.C. 49ers, I think those fans would feel a little upset and think it'd be an absurd move also.

I am not the least upset about the team going to Santa Clara.
It's not far, a lot of so called "San Francisco" events get held at Shoreline amphitheater and other peninsula locations. The team is already based in Santa Clara, and has been for years and years.
This is no big deal.Yup, so did I live near Grattan Park, South of Frederick St, top of Stanyan St near 17TH.....could hear the crowd roar as
YA and Hugh Mc led the Niners......the days of POLY,Lowell,SH, SI, Lincoln,

If Mayor Gavin would like to become the most hated mayor in the history of San Francisco he will keep his BS up. If they are going to move without keeping the SF, they might as well move to Sac and name the team Sutter's Mill 49ers...
You can't copyright a city name. If that were the case the original Springfield would have sued the other 50 Springfield's in the US by now. You can, however, copyright and trademark a cities name as a business. For instance, some of the team's logo's have the city on it and are trademarks owned y the organization. The organization owns the right to be called the SF 49ers. They have built that name recognition with their "customers" over the years. Now why should they have to change because their moving? Does "Seattle's Best" coffee have to change it's name every time it opens a shop in a new city? And to go a little further, does "Crystal Geyser" water actually have to come from a geyser? Or "mountain spring" water? The answer is no. Most of that water comes from L.A. straight out of the tap.

Yes. It is a commercial brand name like for any product only it happens to represent a professional sports team. You have thousands of companies that are named after a city, state, region, country that have no connection with said city, etc. Ferchrissakes, there's probably a company in guandong, china named San Francisco Polymers Inc.
Not living in SF, I got to ask. How smart is the mayor of SF to even suggest such a thing?
Maybe there's a corporate or patent/copyright attorney on this MB who could provide a professional opinion to the contrary but I say the Mayor is off his rocker.

Amen to that. The Giants/Jets don't even play in NY. Instead they play ball in NJ where NY'ers dump their trash and NJ isn't even a real state. :dance2:
Remember the LA Rams? They played in Anaheim which is not even in LA County.
not to mention our favorite rivals who play in Irving, Texas and not Dallas:shades:
I know this and the only law class I've ever taken is an overview of Business Law. I'm wondering if the mayor is just trying to get 49er fans on his side by coming out and saying this. The city has lawyers, most of which have probably told him there's no way he wins a case to make the 49ers change their brand name. It's a last ditch effort to save his city from losing on millions of dollars in taxes.
I think it was stated best on espn.com when a reporter said something to the effect of: it's not personal, it's just business.
In my only visit to San Francisco, one theme became a prominent fixture in my mind about the city. Everything seems to be squeezed together to fit just right. Throw in something as large as a football stadium and you're talking about a lot more money needed than a city that has wide open spaces for the city to build on. I used to want to live in San Francisco until I saw how crowded it is. It wouldn't be so bad if prices were commensurate with the level of happiness I could find by living in a sardine can, but SF seems to be charging more for this living arrangement. For this reason, I can understand where York is coming from. As much as I dislike the guy, I would have done the same thing.

The move will not happen until after an election or two, leaving voters and supervisors another shot at getting it right. It might be a tactical move to keep them in the city or simply spruce up Candlestick. We'll have an ace once we start winning and a hole card now that everyone in town is talking about an actual threat.

It could just be a smoke screen, for all we know.
But there are some legitimate threat to this and there is still time because the actual move is a long process with fluctuating financial negotiations, political moves, planning and etc.
So again, after this one, it would slap the city of SF with their constituents either beeming with pride to reclaim the 49ers as their own or with apathy and a thumbed-nose saying SAYONARA.
Stay tuned!

How can anyone be happy about the 49ers move out of San Francisco?! If they move I will never watch the NFL ever again. Let's be honest a new stadium is not the solution to the 49ers problems. The tax payers US IN SAN FRANCISCO okayed this stadium almost 10 years ago. Dr Kavorkian I mean York intentionally didn't move on this because he is a greedy and self interested man. The Niners are as important to the city as Fishermans Wharf or the TransAmerica pyramid. If we lose them we lose them every San Franciscan regardless of if they like football will be a little different. I hope the Mayor kicks the York's butt on this. 49ers will beat the Lions 24 - 21.
Santa Clara is right down the highway from SF, and it's a better location.

I don't want the blimp above the new stadium to show a picture of the beautiful stadium next to an amusement park. It is a joke, an eyesore, and embarrassing. "We're here at Cisco/ebay/apple/Sun/Oracle stadium right next to beautiful Paramount's Great America with a great view of Top Gun the ride." What a pretty location. The reason At&T has been so successful has been its location/view. The Niners would only get worse if they move away from the city.
You guys sure don't know much about business. The fact that York has gone public with his move from SF proves that he is no longer trying to please anyone who is affiliated with SF. That means he doesn't care about the city of SF. He's not planning on coming back.

Owners have played the "moving" card for decades to get concessions. And I'm not even talking the obvious examples in sports, but all kinds of broad-based businesses - health care, manufacturing, etc. Perhaps you should reconsider your "You guys sure don't know much about business" postion.

Going public with something is the ultimate way to apply pressure to the government.
Just because you take a few business courses doesn't mean you're fit to run your business.
Santa Clara probably is the real deal, but the fact York went public would indicate he COULD be using Santa Clara as leverage, even more so if he had kept it private.

Newsome is pissed because he wanted the stadium in SF so San Francisco will be able to bid for the 2016 Olympics. The only way he can get back at York for taking the team out of SF is fighting to take away the name, "San Francisco 49ers."
"We got a team that's got a lease through next year. They seem to suggest that they can stay in San Francisco as long as they want and they can take the name and they can leave our city. We're looking through the lease. They have obligations."
I know Dr.York will not bow down to Newsome's demands. If he has to change the 49ers name to Santa Clara, he'll do it!! Newsome needs to understand that if he doesn't comply...it will be the demise of his polictical career.

Personally I think it's WAY to early to present that stick. You wait until you have a solid resistance to your plan before you bring that out. Right now, I don't think there was resistance as much as a lack of attention on the San Francisco side.
All York has doen has been to reveal his hand. I think it's a stupid move to do so when you need that later on to get more financial concessions.

It's my hope that somehow the Hunters Point area can be re-considered.
Aside from the toxic cleanups - mainly located in the surrounding waters - it would be an excellent location and not prevent the tailgating going on since it's adjacent to Candlestick.

It's an hour from SF, how can it be a better location? Or do you mean the seating will be betterly located? Right now, Candlestick has one of the best views of the game in the NFL. Why would you want to drive 50 miles, then climb into 4th level deck 100,000 seat stadium for a worse view???? You think prices will cheaper for brand spanking new facility? Maybe in the triple upper upper deck in the endzone, yeah. Or is it just because the parking lot is better? And will it be? The parking spots will still be 10'x8', so the parking spot size won't change. Tell me, why do you care if York posseses better real estate? I have been to stadiums older, old and new. New stadiums are sterile, spacey, impersonal, designed for crowd control, hollow, designed for safety and approved by Homeland Security for multi use in case of disaster. We should renovate Candlestick and make is glorious icon like the one in Rome. We could hire a team of the already here illegals and do it for half the cost, which is about the price of a couple of free agents. We should take advantage of a SF icon. Why would you trade traffic for 3 miles surrounding the game for slightly better traffic in SC just to then drive 50 miles, which will be just as much traffic anyway? Why not just move the team to a deserted island?
