SMOOT BENCHED, WILLIAMSON DEMOTED
The Vikings have benched cornerback Fred Smoot, according to Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He'll be replaced by rookie Cedric Griffin.
The move calls into question Smoot's future with the team. He was signed as a free agent prior to the 2005 season, but since the Vikings used a high-dollar roster bonus in lieu of a signing bonus, the bulk of the cap charge was taken in year one of the relationship.
Jensen also reports that receiver Troy Williamson likely will have reduced snaps, due to his ongoing problems with catching the football. The No. 7 overall pick in 2005 leads the league with 10 drops. He was replaced by Marcus Robinson in the starting lineup in Week Eleven, and has faded badly after strong performances in the first two games of the season.
Two points:
1. FA is not a panecea, even when you're kiding yourself that it is "the solution" to your problem. Even more ironic is the bashing the 49er front office got for not signing Smoot to that big FA contract...
2. Drafting a WR in the Top-10 doesn't mean he'll be any good. Even if you're not the Lions.

Who bashed the FA over this guy? Is it aimed at someone specific? or is this merely pointless?
Furthermore, the draft is not the only solution to a teams problems...you need both...because picks can go bust.

With the Niners (as well as every team) having alot of cap room in the offseason, it will be very interesting to see what the Niners do.
I know that alot of people will be begging for us to sign some top names.
As much as I like seeing the Niners win, a tiny part of me wanted us to have a good draft pick this offseason. People are saying that our improvement will attract some good names, but at what price?
I can just tell that if Nolan does the right thing and be conservative with his signings, people will flip out. However, he may just give in since he will be going into year 3.

Well, Williamson was a reach and they should have known they were getting a project. They were just too eager to replace Randy.
But I find it ironic that Smoot leaves the Redskins very highly regarded and hyped and is a constant disappointment, whereas Walt leaves them to no fanfare at all, assumjed to be just a caretaker player, comes to us and has what has already been a career year.

There were a lot of "why don't we sign Smoot" threads going around last offseason.

Ties don't happen in todays NFL.
That PIT/ATL game a few years ago doesn't count.
Actually on any given Sunday exactly half the teams playing will lose.
On any given Sunday, Tony Romo is awesome. :worthy:
