Many speculate that Rice will be cut after this season due to his large salary, and the fact that he's coming off an injury and hasn't been very productive this year.

Should the 49ers take a gamble on him? He's going to be turning 33 soon, but we signed Chris Doleman when he was 35, and he went on to have 38 sacks in three seasons for us(sadly, we haven't had much of pass rush since he left in 1998).

I say sign him to a 3 year deal for maybe 2.5 to 3 mil a season and if it doesn't work out, cut him.

It's exciting to think we have the chance to bring in Rice, Freeny, Thomas and Clements to our defense!! Even getting 2 of those guys could have a major impact.

I wouldn't mind having Rice if he would sign a not too large contract loaded with incentives.

wouldn't we have to convert rice to a 3-4 linebacker? i'll take a pass on him

Rice would not be a bad pick-up at all. (after all, his big bro made a name for him self in a 9er uni) I would rather get Freeny though.
Id rather see freeny too. But wouldnt that be cool if we had RICE as RDE, and Freeny as LDE. Woah that would be a QB nitemare.

He was amazing when he was 28-31ish. He's passed his prime. Unless he wants to sign and get limited playing time and to basically help Manny and Melvin, etc.

I'd very much be in favor of this acquisition, so long as he's not overpaid for. Nolan is not the type to do that, so I'd trust his judgement.

If I'm not mistaken, we're going to have huge cap room next year and we have no excuse to go out and spend some of it to get resources that will help us not only now, but vets to work with our young guys, like Larry Allen and Trent Dilfer.

3 mil tops, loaded with incentives. If he doesn't want it, he can have fun in the retirement home. But seriously, I doubt he'll want to come here. He wants another ring.

A few years ago having Rice on the team would be a dream come true.

But wow, he's really fallen off the last year or so. I don't know if I'd want to take that risk. Also, Tampa is a 4-3, and if Nolan wants to stick with a 3-4, I don't think he'd fit in.

I think rice would want 7-8 million a year thats alot for a beat up 33 year old. We need a pass rusher maybe we can find it through the draft.

I doubt anyone would pay him that. The Redskins would be stupid enough to do that, but they already signed Carter to a big contact.
