Do you think Dwight Freeney would be a good pick in Free Agency come March 2 ?

I read on some website that DE Dwight Freeney would become a free agent come March 2, 2007, and you know how our Defensive linemen are slow at getting preasure to the Quarterbacks! ! ! So i was wondering what do you the 49er fans think? should we try to get him or get a DE in the draft.:money:

Need to upgrade the defense a bit more than just having Thomas in there. Depending what we run (3-4 or 4-3), the most we do need more talent on that defensive line than what we have right now. We also need a FS, because I feel K. Lewis is more of an SS than anything. Picking up S Weddle in the 2nd round would be great to go along with Lewis. 3rd pick should be used on a good DE pass rusher at most, and we need to sign additional corner. Harris is getting older, and Spencer to me is missing a lot of games due to injury so we need good depth there. If we try the 3-4 then we need to bring in atleast 3 new LBs either through draft, trade or FA. 4-3 we only need to bring in 1 maybe 2. I do not see Ulbrich sticking around, Smith is age and cannot play the game anymore like he should. Leaving only Lawson and Moore as our premiere LBs.

On offense, we need to cut ties with TE Johnson, forget trying to run the twin TE bit. We have a monster in Norris to keep in there at FB most the time. He is a big key why Gore had all his success this year. He is injury prone, and I am certain he is going to want atleast a 2 million a year contract and I would rather spend that money elsewhere than on a back up TE. WR needs to be address urgently, Bryant is not the answer here as 49ers source came out stated he will not be the #1 WR next year. Remember he is suspended the first 2 games of the year due to is incompetance staying right. Battle at most is nothing better than a #3 WR. Look for the Niners to draft a WR in the first round or trade for one. Bennet is not a #1 WR, he is a good posession reciever and we pretty much have that in Battle. We should think about bringing in additional lineman as well. Allen is old, Jennings is injury prone, Harris well is Harris, Wragge is our main fill in, we are not certain how Heitmann is going to come back from that broken leg, Smiley is good quality on the line and Snyder to me is good at pass blocking and decent at run blocking. Picking up G/T Steinbach makes sense here since the main left side of the line is really vulnerable of not staying in a full 16 games.

I have my doubts that the Niners will sign Freeney, especially if what I read is true and Nolan goes with a 3-4. Freeney may not function well in that scheme, at least not well enough to be worth 7 or 8 million a year. This 3-4 issue kind of puts the Niners in a corner as far as who's available. Vonnie Holliday (MIA) is more of a 4-3 run stopper. Terdell Sands (OAK) would make a good NT given that he's 6'7" and huge, but the Niners need DE's as well. Jared Allen (KC) and Justin Smith (CIN) are both DE's and may be what the Niners need. I would take either one, though Allen is a restricted free agent and may be tougher to get. There are 6 or 7 other guys as well who are not worth mentioning.

If we ran a 4-3, I wouldn't really mind his QB pressure. But were going to be a future 3-4 D, so he simply doesn't fit. Plus Nolan has said things about Freeney, saying he won't spend 8 mil on a few sacks.

No! All he has is that stupid spin move....and notice it wasnt working so well this year. He is still a good pass rusher but that is all he is. Nolan kinda already hinted that we wont be getting Freeney when he said he is looking for well rounded linemen. Meaning linemen that can rush the passer and stop the run. Freeney isnt that, atleast in my opinion. I will bet alot of money that we get Jared Allen. He is a native of the SF area and will also be a free agent.

Freeney would be good but Allen would probably be the better fit. He's young & solid, but I don't know if he's a 3-4 type of lineman. What you guys have to realize is that if Nolan is dead set on a 3-4 scheme, no good pass rushing defensive end will want to sign. For a 3-4 scheme you basically need 1 huge nose tackle and 2 run stuffing defensive ends. Most of the pressure in a 3-4 comes from the outside LBs. If they get Freeney the 3-4 is out, Allen could play a 3-4 but who would want to unless we pay well. He may be worth big money, we'll see how Nolan goes.

Freeney is going to become the highest paid defensive player after some bonehead team overpays for him. Rumor is that the Redskins are willing to offer any amount for him. :laugh: Too expensive, and doesn't fit our scheme.

Jared Allen is who I hope we aquire. He would be the perfect fit and hopefuly at the right price.

People on your list that aren't really that impressive

Harris (unless he somehow plays just as well next year), Spencer, Lewis, Roman, Harylson, Lawson (sorry Manny but you weren't good this year), Sopoago.

Smith (he is our guy but not nothing to get excited about yet), Battle, Braynt, Walker, Bennett, EJ.

I think our guys will be good next year. But certainly not worthy of saying "Man, could you imagine...". I think some teams could say that. Like if, Denver added Thomas and Clements (RIP Williams btw) or something like that.

Doubtful. The Colts can't afford to keep slapping franchise tags on players like that. Manning is already eating up so much of their money... That's why I don't think the Colts will ever win a Super Bowl with Manning. His high salary is a detriment to the team. Spending 8 million a year on Freeney may not be in the Niners' best interest either. They need DE's. Marques Douglas is a role player and a good back up, but SF needs to do better. Justin Smith from the Bengals makes more sense. He's a big, quick pass rusher, he puts up consistent numbers, and he tackles well. Don't the Bengals also use a 3-4? He may be a perfect fit.

Speaking of franchise tags, KC is more likely to slap a franchise tag on Jared Allen, that and the fact that he's a restricted free agent make him tougher to get.

probably too much money, i bet we can get thomas or briggs to add to our LBing for way way less than freeney would want alone and i think that would make our 3 - 4 better more than anything and we could pickup some DL guys in the draft..or patrick willis...AND Addalius Thomas..AND Lance Briggs hehe
