View Full Version : Dangerous from England's draft thread!

First of all, good afternoon everybody!
Right, I am going to be looking for lots of advice over the next few months, so I figured I may as well start my own thread where you guys can help me with my homework!
I am going to be the Rookie 49ers drafter for a UK based NFL site, as nobody else wanted to take them on, and they were looking for a fan of each particular team to represent each team.
Now this is where the fun begins, because to be quite honest, because of the little coverage of College football over here, (unless you can afford to subscribe to various different cable channels, and spend a quarter of the year not sleeping, or have any social life because of the time difference etc) I have very little knowledge of college football!
Therefore, I am going to be looking to 49er fans to tell me, who they want, why they want them and what their knowledege of each player is.
Now obviously we have the Senior Bowl coming up which could propel people up the draft and possible put some down.
I have a guy over here who is going to copy me a lot of the college bowls so I can get to work on them and see what I fancy, and at this moment in time from reading you guys' comments and those over at webzone I have about 2 pages of 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks!!!
So if you have any sleepers that you think will drop to day 2, or if you can all decide on what positions we need to strenthen on then that's great too. Personally I think I have a good idea of what we need and would personally be happy if we got at least the following through FA and the Draft.
(In no particular order)
S
CB maybe 2
OLB
WR
RT
RB
DE
NT
So if you think somebody is asking a dumbass question about college football on any of the thousand threads that are going to appear in the next few months, just double check it's not me before firing the abuse my way please! :hide:
As far as I am aware, they are looking to do at least 2 drafts before the draft day, so as and when things happen over this side I will update you as to who's drafting who.
As I say, I am taking this very seriously, and I would appreciate any help that any of you can give me.
I thank you for your time and any efforts any of you put into this with/for me
Cheers
Brian

Current favourites from this site for #11 are
Laron Landry
Reggie Nelson (some think he's better than Landry, but he's generally ranked lower)
Patrick Willis (who has been projected this high by some, while others think he's barely a first)
Alan Branch (who likely won't fall this far)
Amobi Okoye (who while intruiging for potential is looking less and less like he has a hom in the 3-4)
cornerback is another possibility, but Leon Hall's stock keeps dropping as he is now viewed as solid but ordinary, and Darrelle Revis would be a mild reach.
And then there are some that want to make the grave mistake of using the pick on a wide receiver.
Thats about all I can tell you by now. You're likely to get a lot more opinion from people when its almost time for you to select and they know who you could get.

For that extra homework, if you haven't already, check out Bonstonker's videos on the senior bowl practices. I'm still going through them myself.
I'm a novice when it comes to the draft, usually I just turn it on the day of. But the last couple years I've been following it more and more every year. I didn't really read a whole lot of threads last year but this time I'm going to try and follow as much as I can.
I'm sure there will be members that can share their thoughts.
Good luck.

Here's a target list of sorts for you:
Round 1 Pick #11
My personal favorite for the 11th pick is Adam Carriker, DE from Nebraska. He's a massive man, and has dominated every OL he's faced. Now, he's doing it in the Senior Bowl practices. At the moment, he's not the popular choice on this board, but you'll begin hearing his name creeping up the 'experts' boards by the time the Senior Bowl and combine conclude.
Other choices (in order): LaRon Landry(S-LSU), Patrick Willis(ILB-Ole Miss), Leon Hall(CB-Michigan), Robert Meachem(WR-Tennessee), Dwayne Bowe(WR-LSU), Reggie Nelson(S-Florida).
Round 2 Pick #42
If I was able to land Carriker in round one, I'd probably look to the outsides, and see what was available at CB and WR. Safety and linebacker are other places to keep an eye on. Having said that, my targets would be (in order): Aaron Ross(CB-Texas), Eric Weddle(S-Utah), David Irons(CB-Auburn), Marcus McCauley(CB-Fresno St), Jason Hill(WR-Washington St), Anthony Spencer(DE/LB-Purdue), Craig Davis(WR/KR-LSU), Jonathan Wade(CB-Tennessee), and Fred Bennett(CB-South Carolina).
Round 3 Pick #71
If DE and CB are addressed, then it's all about Best Player Available from here on out. In order, target: Sabby Piscitelli(S-Oregon St), Paul Williams(WR-Fresno St), Marcus Thomas(DT/DE-Florida), Justin Harrell(NT-Tennessee), Desmond Bishop(ILB-Cal), Eric Frampton(S-Washington St), John Wendling(S-Wyoming), Aundrae Allison(WR-East Carolina), Kenny Scott(CB-Georgia Tech), Courtney Taylor(WR-Auburn), and Marvin White(S-TCU).
Round 4 Picks #101 (from WAS), #107, and #121
It's possible one of the afformentioned players slips to here, if not look for: Brian Robinson(DE/LB-Texas), Prescott Burgess(OLB-Michgan), David Ball(WR-New Hampshire), Kareem Brown(DE/DT-Miami), C.J. Wilson(CB-Baylor), Jay Alford(DT/DE-Penn St), Stewart Bradley(OLB-Nebraska), Eric Wright(CB-UNLV), James Marten(RT-Boston College), Kyle Young(C/G/RT-Fresno St), Corey Hilliard(RT-Oklahoma St), and Enoka Lucas(C-Oregon).
Round 5 Pick #138
Targets: Conrad Bolston(NT-Maryland), Stephen Heyer(RT-Maryland), Matt Trannon(WR-Michigan St), Justin Hickman(DE/LB-UCLA), Antonio Johnson(NT-Mississippi St), Quentin Echols(NT-Kansas St), Dwayne Wright(RB-Fresno St), Brandon Jackson(RB-Nebraska), Selvin Young(RB/KR-Texas), Jason Snelling(RB/FB-Virginia), and Mansfield Wrotto(G-Georgia Tech).
Round 6 Pick #172
Targets: Daren Stone(S-Maine), Paul Soliai(NT-Utah), Clifton Ryan(DT-Michigan St), Victor DeGrate(DE/LB-Oklahoma St), Kelly Talavou(DT-Utah), Ameer Ismail(ILB-Western Michigan), Jacoby Jones(WR-Lane), Craig Dahl(S-North Dakota St), Rory Johnson(OLB-Ole Miss), John Talley(CB-Duke), Ryne Robinson(KR/WR-Miami of Ohio), Curtis Brown(RB-BYU), Mike Otto(LT-Purdue), Mark Fenton(C-Colorado), Jeremy Clark(NT-Alabama), and Anthony Arline(CB-Baylor).

If I chuck some names about on here, can I have your opinions on the too please.
Been reading some threads over here and some people are keen on the following:
Brandon Merriweather, CB/FS Projected for Round 2, possible off field problems though?
Antonio Johnson DE, Projected for Round 2?
How about Lorenzo Booker of FSU in the 3rd? Personally I think I'd see if dropped to 4?
I don't think I'm going to be drafting a RB in the 3rd, but any opinions are welcome.

Brandon Merriwaether is a good s but does have some of the field issue, If he is there in the 3rd take him,
personally i would hope for something like this...
11- carikker
42- Aaron ross or marcos maccauley
3rd- david irons
4th - Mcknight or Trannon, i see trannon as a sleeper and a good 4-5 th round pick

Meriweather: He has good speed, is a bit undersized, but can make some plays. Personally, I think he's a douche, so I wouldn't want him on the Niners.
Antonio Johnson: I don't think he'll go in round 2, wait and see if he's there in round 4 if you're going to pull the trigger on him. Also, he could be a NT project in the 3-4 in the NFL.
Lorenzo Booker: Could be the next Warrick Dunn, or could just be what he is- a smallish back that won't last long in the NFL. He'll probably get a few years on a roster as a Change Of Pace back before finally being released for good.

I'm not quite sure I know what it is you're doing. It seems to be an interactive draft game of sorts...when is your pick?
Hi,
There are 32 people from one site (uknflfan.com) who have all been given their own team to draft the first 3 rounds for.
(Unfortunately our invite system is bust, so you can't view at this moment in time, but I will post the updates on this thread)
As a rookie to drafting and as a complete newcomer to College Football I was just basically looking for advice on who to draft and who would be good selections.
The draft is basically going to be rated on the needs for each teams needs etc rather than just picking 3 good players who maybe your team really doesn't need.
Each player gets up to 8 hours on the clock and unfortunately, Arizona have been on for about 4 now with no picks, so the guy picking for them obviously isn't around at the moment as I was hoping to pick today, so looks like tomorrow now.
I will update our draft as and when people draft.
I know you have posted some really good stuff on this thread already majestic :worthy: which is great, but any further help is greatly appreciated.
I'm reading all these arguments about why to draft player A and not player B, and why we should draft player C and not player D, E, F or G in round 2 etc, and as I said before, I can only go by what I read and see on here and the brief clips I have available on YouTube etc. I have the Senior Bowl and practice drills all on DVD, but I just haven't had time to watch them all yet.
See it's obvious to me from watching several of our games from last year, our D line needs help, we need a big playing CB as well as more depth, a hard hitting, tough tackling, hard blitzing Safety would be very welcome, as would an ILB or OLB for our 3-4 D. But where is the depth, can I pick up a DE in round 2 or 3 over Carricker and go with CB or S in 1, or do I go with the ILB/OLB in one or hope to get one in two? etc etc! I'm definitely for drafting Defence in the first two rounds and then going with BPA from there.
It's quite difficult though when you don't see these guys week in week out over here.

Just don't waste our 1st rounder on Alan Branch. That kid is lazy. You can get a space eater later in the draft for a better value.
Since there is no free agency involved, I'd say your greatest need to address would either be a pass rushing LB, or a WR.
In the real draft, I hope we get Carriker, but I don't know if he's going to score you the 'wow' points you need to win this thing. It's hard to guess how knowledgable the people you are competing against are, so I'll get back to you when your pick is close, and we'll see who's available.

I'm up against really knowledgable guys who spend half their living lives studying, watching and playing Gridiron. Most have subscriptions to the NFL network, and DVD service for College and NFL teams.
I wish I had the time to be like that, but I just can't fit it in at the minute.

If the people you're playing are knowledgable, then Carriker may be your best bet. There are no 1st round OLB prospects worth the #11. Carriker upgrades our DL, and can rush the passer from that position, as well as hold the point of attack and stop the run. Robert Meachem, Patrick Willis, LaRon Landry, Dwayne Bowe, and Leon Hall would be my choices after Carriker. But, it sounds like we're not a front office that's interested in drafting CBs in the first round.

I personally like L.Landry or R.Nelson with this pick. We need a big playmaker on our defense. Anyone of these 2 will be that playmaker.
I personally like Craig Davis with this pick. We need more talent on the WR roster. Craig Davis has more potential than any other WR that will be drafted in the 2nd round (assuming Sidney Rice is not around).
Round 3 Pick #71
If DE and CB are addressed, then it's all about Best Player Available from here on out. In order, target: Sabby Piscitelli(S-Oregon St), Paul Williams(WR-Fresno St), Marcus Thomas(DT/DE-Florida), Justin Harrell(NT-Tennessee), Desmond Bishop(ILB-Cal), Eric Frampton(S-Washington St), John Wendling(S-Wyoming), Aundrae Allison(WR-East Carolina), Kenny Scott(CB-Georgia Tech), Courtney Taylor(WR-Auburn), and Marvin White(S-TCU).
I like Desmond Bishop with this pick. This guy will be a great replacement for D.Smith. He's athletic and plays well in coverage. He could learn alot from guys like Smith and Moore. He'll be a solid player in years to come.
Round 4 Picks #101 (from WAS), #107, and #121
It's possible one of the afformentioned players slips to here, if not look for: Brian Robinson(DE/LB-Texas), Prescott Burgess(OLB-Michgan), David Ball(WR-New Hampshire), Kareem Brown(DE/DT-Miami), C.J. Wilson(CB-Baylor), Jay Alford(DT/DE-Penn St), Stewart Bradley(OLB-Nebraska), Eric Wright(CB-UNLV), James Marten(RT-Boston College), Kyle Young(C/G/RT-Fresno St), Corey Hilliard(RT-Oklahoma St), and Enoka Lucas(C-Oregon).
I like a guy named TRAVAROUS BAIN. He's a CB from Hampton. This guy is gonna be a steal!!
Samson Satele is another guy that will be a great addition to our team. If this guy is still around at this pick, we gotta grab him. With rumors of trading Justin Smiley, I think this guy will be a great backup to Larry Allen and David Baas.
Round 5 Pick #138
Targets: Conrad Bolston(NT-Maryland), Stephen Heyer(RT-Maryland), Matt Trannon(WR-Michigan St), Justin Hickman(DE/LB-UCLA), Antonio Johnson(NT-Mississippi St), Quentin Echols(NT-Kansas St), Dwayne Wright(RB-Fresno St), Brandon Jackson(RB-Nebraska), Selvin Young(RB/KR-Texas), Jason Snelling(RB/FB-Virginia), and Mansfield Wrotto(G-Georgia Tech).
Round 6 Pick #172
Targets: Daren Stone(S-Maine), Paul Soliai(NT-Utah), Clifton Ryan(DT-Michigan St), Victor DeGrate(DE/LB-Oklahoma St), Kelly Talavou(DT-Utah), Ameer Ismail(ILB-Western Michigan), Jacoby Jones(WR-Lane), Craig Dahl(S-North Dakota St), Rory Johnson(OLB-Ole Miss), John Talley(CB-Duke), Ryne Robinson(KR/WR-Miami of Ohio), Curtis Brown(RB-BYU), Mike Otto(LT-Purdue), Mark Fenton(C-Colorado), Jeremy Clark(NT-Alabama), and Anthony Arline(CB-Baylor).

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Calvin Johnson - WR - Georgia Tech

10. Atlanta Falcons - Reggie Nelson - S - Florida
11. San Francisco 49ers - Adam Carriker - DE - Nebraska
12. Buffalo Bills - Patrick Willis - LB - Ole' Miss
My basic reasoning, with a little help from Majestic and other sources..
As there appear to be no 1st round OLB prospects worth the #11. Carriker upgrades our DL, and can rush the passer from that position, as well as hold the point of attack and stop the run.
Last season we had no pass rush what-so-ever, and QB's were raping our secondary for fun, so this just seems like common sense to me, and who better to groom him into the role than Bryant Young. Also this may lead to Carriker possibly drawing double teams on him, which if so, could well open some gaps for our linebackers to get to the QB's, as well as getting there himself when in single and possibly double team situations.
He's earnt rave reviews from the Senior Bowl and will fit the 3-4 Defence we are running perfectly.
FA will address some (hopefully most or all) of our needs, but I feel this is the best man for our Defence at this point.

Yeah I think that pick works given the time frame we're in right now, with limited FA movements in the league.
It'll be interesting where the next WR's, CB's, and S's go in the next round.

Been thinking about this and have read a few reports that Meacham goes in the first, so may be he's fell under the UK radar.
If indeed he does fall to me, I then need to scout for a Safety or Corner Back in the 3rd round, because I was thinking of going Safety/CB in 2 and then WR in 3.
I'm thinking the Vikings may pick him before he gets to me though.

49er fans...... meet your second round draft pick from our game!
With their second round pick, The San Francisco 49ers take a bit of a gamble and draft:
Brandon Meriweather from Miami (FL)
http://www.accrofoot.com/uploads/MeriweatherBrandon-lg.jpg
The 49ers need help in their secondary and it starts with this guy, touted as one of the best safeties in the college season for 2006, off-field and one major onfield incident has probably accounted for his drop in the draft. However, I'm willing to take the chance on him and give him a chance to prove himself that he is good enough to play in the NFL and isn't a walking 15 yard penalty.
He is also very versatile and could also line up at CB if required to do so as well as both Safety roles.

Well, since you can't sign AT in this, I'd recommend getting a pass-rush backer. Then, you'll have addressed each level on the defense.
Do the teams that have traded picks in the real NFL still have their picks in this game, or does TB have two 2nd rounders?

I'm stuck between Wade, Irons and Johnson
What are your breakdowns/differences between Wade and Irons?
Cheers
Brian
Wade has been unspectacular most of his career, some scouts speculate he only 'showed up' his senior year to get a better NFL check. Irons on the other hand, has fought his way to where he is, and is one of the most refined CBs in this year's draft. Towrds the end of the season, he tried baiting QBs too much, and gave up a couple of big plays. Irons isn't a big INT guy, but he's good at knocking the ball down, or tackling a WR immediately if he makes the catch. And, despite his smaller stature, is a fierce hitter, and willing in run support.
Now, on to your draft. Since you've already addressed DL and S/CB, I recommend going after a pass rusher (unless this game takes into account who we'll sign in FA). If it's based on the rosters as they are, you need a pass rush specialist.
I recommend:
Stewart Bradley, OLB, Nebraska
Positives: Has a developing frame that could add another 20 pounds for a possible move to rush end, with no loss in quickness...Has an athletic, big physique for a linebacker, with good upper body muscle definition, tight waist and hips, good bubble, strong lower body frame and only 10 percent body fat...Has adequate timed speed, but keeps plays in front of him and has a good short-area closing burst...Works well in space, showing fluid change of direction agility...Has the balance and body control to stay on the hips of the tight ends and backs in the short-area passing game...Uses his hands effectively to press and reroute...Chases hard and shows good urgency getting to the ball...Hits with pop on contact and has the strong hands and technique to jar the ball loose from the ball carrier (four fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles in 2006)...Smart, instinctive player who reads schemes well and is alert to play-action and misdirection...Explodes behind his hits and uses his strength in attempts to wrap...Has the body control to break down in the open field and improved his ability to take angles when making plays in space (did not overrun the play as much in 2006 than he did in the past)...Will face up and wrap with intent to punish...Has a good work ethic who puts in extra hours in the weight and film rooms...Has good vision to quickly locate and close on the ball...Makes good body adjustments on the run and is quick to react to misdirection...Plays the run with good stoutness at the point of attack, using his hands and upper body strength to stack and control...Has enough upper body strength to split double teams and clog the inside rush lanes...Holds his ground firmly at the point of attack and is active with his hands in attempts to shed...While he won't hesitate to take on blockers, his instincts lets him make plays when unblocked due to his quick read-and-react ability, compensating for a lack of blazing speed...Won't blow up ball carriers in his tackles, but will secure and drag down...Can throw and jerk blockers, if needed, but prefers to fend off, play off and close in on the ball rather than stay and offer combat...Has the functional burst to close on running plays along the edge and has the range to string plays out and take away the cutback lanes...Will get a little out of control in his pursuit at times, but has the athletic agility to recover...Keeps his pad level down to make plays down the line of scrimmage and move through traffic (makes a lot of east/west plays)...Knows how to pick up his feet to avoid trash...Has the loose hips to get depth in his pass drops, but is better playing in the zone than in man coverage...Understands zone concepts and is alert to switch-offs, but needs to continue working on taking better angles...Very effective on stunts, especially when unblocked and uses his hands effectively to squeeze through the rush lanes...Shows good anticipation and explosiveness on the blitz (can dog inside or off the edge)...Has the speed to flush the quarterback out of the pocket.
Negatives: Durability is a slight concern due to his 2005 and prep school injuries...Has adequate timed speed and a decent straight-line burst, but lacks suddenness moving from sideline-to-sideline...Lacks natural hands and fails to extend for the ball outside his frame (several pass deflections could have been interceptions, but he bobbled and double-caught the ball)...Can keep relationship with the tight ends and backs in the short area, but loses sight of the ball in flight and doesn't have the timed speed to mirror receivers past the second level...Has good strength, but doesn't always deliver crunching hits to drive back the ball carrier (more of a wrap-up type)...Has improved in this area, but still takes some poor angles in pursuit, causing him to out-run the plays at times...Eyeballs the quarterback too long working in the deep secondary, allowing the receiver to get behind him (struggles to recover when beaten)...Better making plays in backside pursuit or on the edge, as he will get a little reckless closing in space.
Compares To: SCOTT FUJITA-New Orleans...Bradley has a well-built frame with valid read-and-react instincts. He is very effective in backside pursuit or making plays in front of him, but will struggle in man coverage, as he peeks into the backfield too long, letting the receiver get behind him. He has some durability issues, but played pain-free in 2006. He hits with good pop on contact and is very effective pressuring the pocket when unblocked. With more teams emphasizing the edge rush, Bradley has room on his frame to add more bulk if a team wants to utilize him as a situational rusher. He plays with a high motor and can also contribute as a gunner on special teams. For teams looking for consistent, steady play, Bradley is a nice fit. He is just not going to punish people on a consistent basis, but will make his fair share on non-flashy plays. - nfldraftscout.com

ahh poop, I didn't see this before I drafted!
With their 3rd round selection the San Francisco 49ers draft Charles Johnson DE from Georgia.

Now this pick for me is all about BPA, I really wanted to address our secondary further at this point, but reading up on this guy on various different sites, he's tipped as a late first rounder, possibly dropping to the top of the 2nd, so for me to pick him up in the 3rd round is too good an opportunity to pass up.
Johnson recorded 7.5 sacks last season and also had 27 QB pressures
If the draft did work out this way in real life (which sounds unlikely) then this should instantly fix our defensive line problems, give us a decent pass rush and coupled with the signing of Carriker in the first both to be taken under Bryant Young's wing, the future is very bright.
We could also use Johnson as a situational pass rusher.
I don't feel I could have done any better with my draft picks for this season in my first time of participating, potentially, I have picked up 3 first rounders and addressed 2 key areas on the teams list of priority places to strengthen.
Your thoughts?

Carriker, Merriweather and Johnson would be fine by me - though 2 DE is a little much in the first 3

what size is Johnson? Does he project as a 3-4 OLB at all?
