NFL network just now broke a story about Patrick Kerney who is one of the best DE in the league, will become a free agent as of march 2nd. He is currently under contract but has the option to void that contract and NFL network is reporting that Kerney is waiting until after Feb. so Atlanta cannot apply the Fran. Tag on him. He will demand a high priced contract. But this guy is worth every penny. He is a total work horse, he never gives up and plays strong. He rushes the passer as good as anyone in the league. He's an 8 year Vet. but still has some left in the tank. With all the other top DE off the free agent market already due to Fran. tags I would love the niners to really make a hard push to land this guy. I know he's played in a 4-3 system but he has the bulk to play end in the 3-4 scheme! I love the guy and say bring him in!

That is good news but just imagine the price tag on his head with so many teams needing a good pass rusher,

its all supply and demand

6.5 Sacks in 05, 4.5 in 06. Production like this doesnt demand a large contract. He played out of position in Atlantas 3-4. The last good season he had in 04 (13.5 sacks) he was a 43 end which is his best position. If we were making the switch to a 43 then he would be worth a look but were commited to the 34 and he doesnt fit anywhere. We'd be better off spending that money elsewhere.

Money is what we have this year. I would rather spend millions on a guy like Kerney, rather then spending almost as much for a second level player all in the sake of saving money! We've got cap space, lets spend it!

Wasnt he hurt for part of those the past two seasons ?

Even with that i say we dont take him, i think us focussing mainly on the draft rather than FA signings i think we can find a top caliber pass rusher this year with so much depth at DE

In order to have cap space in the future you need to work with what you have now wisely. Singing second tear players "Walt/Larry Allen/Douglas" is a great move if you do it wisely. But I do not think spending money on Kerney, or Freeney is a good move. I would much rather see the niners lock in on Adalius Thomas and Clements. Those are both guys that fit into our system perfectly. Just because you have cap space does not mean you NEED to spend it. Get the guys that fit in, and then wait till next year and see if a 34 end that works is available, then spend your money.

We still have to spend it wisely.

Kerney is not a good fit for our defense. He will get close to what Adalius Thomas gets, who is a perfect fit.

My only theory behind spening money is that its not doing you any good if you start the season with 30 million in cap space and no key free agents signed and going 9-7 again next year. Spend money wisely but go out and sign a top notch free agent

he's a 4-3 end, in a 3-4 he couldn't play end and I do not think he would fit in the LB spot either.

The problem is, that last part is a contradiction in terms. You simply can't get a top-notch free agent at a bargain price.

However, I think that the right guys are worth what they cost in actual dollars, especially if you have a guy who makes it easier on the cap when you need it to be.

Kerney is a 4-3 DE, he did not play OLB in our 3-4 (he played DE still) and he doesn't fit your D unless you go to fulltime 4-3

he played 9 games and recorded 4.5 sacks thats 1 less then BY I think we can get a better value but i wouldnt b upset if we got him

Either way I am glad that the Falcons are gonna lose him. With every guy going to free agency, it increases the chances of us getting who we want even if we don't want that guy.

love kerney, but like it has been said. he's a 4-3 DE. though we did play a lot of 4-3 last year in the end. but with the "Direction" the team is going, he wouldn't fit in our plans

Does anyone know if he will be a free agent starting March 3d??? or does he have 2 more years in his contract???

Would it be a good idea to bring him here keeping in mind the huge amount of bonus money he will proably want???

He will be available.
He's coming off of an injury and will turn 31.
So, personally, for the future of this team I am not interested.
He's good, but you have to build for the future.

He played in the 3-4 in Atlanta, and SUCKED. And he hated it. So he won't be coming to SF.

I was searching Patrick Kerney on wikipedia and accidentally misspelled his name Patrick Kearney. Never knew Kearney was a serial killer! :francis:

he played in the 3-4 the first couple of year in the league and he was horrible, he is a 4-3 DE NOT a 3-4 OLB. He's also an injury risk every down.

So many wrong things being said in this thread.

Kerney played in the Falcons 3-4 for 2 seasons, just two. Every other year he's been a 4-3 DE. He was never a 3-4 OLB, never used there at all, never. He always played DE in both schemes. Up until 2006 he never missed a game so last year was an abberation not a norm, and it was a chest injury that put him down, before that he was playing with a triceps pull.

Kerney still isn't an ideal 3-4 DE (despite he was productive there in 2002), and the past two seasons he's moved himself out of sacks, which probably leads to some dumb personal foul penalties he's also claimed over that time. But the Niners should sign him since he pretty much owns the Cardinals. :)

Aye should have fact checked! must have been thinking of a different falcon, I could have sworn though he played OLB but you'd know better than I.

Well every Falcon OLB sucked during that time :)

Just think that our DC was Wade Phillips :rolleyes2:
