According to a report in Friday's Boston Globe, the 32-year-old Dillon will ask the Patriots for his release and walk away from the game on his own terms.

"I think more of my health, how I envision myself 5-10 years down the road," he told the Globe. "I don't want to be broken down, not able to play with my kids."

He said the prospect of his returning to another team was unlikely, but anything's possible.

"Football is the furthest thing on my mind right now,'' Dillon said in the Globe story. ''I may wake up and feel the itch and decide I still want to shake it, but as of now, I doubt that will happen.''

Dillon, who is under contract for the next three seasons with a 2007 salary cap charge of $4.4 million, told the newspaper he has yet to speak with the team.

Looks like he's pulling a Tiki Barber and getting out while he can still walk without a limp.

I think his health but more so his obvious diminishing role due to Maroney is the real reason :tung:

Still respect him and loved him as a Bengal. He wasn't as dynamic, to me, as a patriot tho.

I think that is the real reason too. Also last season he looked way slow and like he lost several steps since his 1600 yd season prior.

You know he may make the Hall of Fame. Of course I think it's a long shot.

Better shot than Barber IMO.

His play suffered a steep drop-off...

HOF career, if you ask me. Pro-Bowler, single game rushing record at one point, SuperBowl Champion, great player on a bad team, great player on a good team. Not a lot more you can ask of him.

Do you think his cornrows will keep him outta the HOF ?

Just KIDDING !

He has the resume, however, he seems to have been always overlooked throughout his career. Not a real dynamic guy, just did his job...complained a little, but found peace in NE. It'll be interesting to see if he ever gets nominated.

But i dont think he gets into the Hall.

Laurence Maroney just became my 2nd round pick.

"Football is the furthest thing on my mind right now,'' Dillon said

While it may be physical burn out, sounds a lot like mental burn out.

And if your heart isn't 100% in the game, you will get crushed by a defender who is.

Either way, it's best to walk away on your own terms.

Hall of fame?? No way. The HOF turns away so many deserving players every year, and I don't dee how Dillion is going to stand out in the crowd.

ESPN reports that Corey Dillon is requesting a release from the Pats. Dillon is contemplating retirement, but may still play if he feels he would like to sometime in the future. So just for fun, what are people opinions on signing Dillon to SF?

Umm well we have Hicks and M-Rob to choose from and i believe m-rob is a good back for gore, and with the money that dillon might want, im not sure it be a good signing

he would be a good veteren backup, but he'd be coming to the niners to get fewer carries than he would get with NE anyway, so it's probably not going to happen. he had a pretty darn good career though

Man this makes me feel old. It seems not long ago he was a young up and coming player for the Bengals. At least Favre is still around to make me feel young!

My favorite part of the offseason:

Player X was cut.

2 minutes after report, someone posts:

49ers should sign Player X (even though Player X is a horrible fit)

Michael A. Smith said he could see him coming the niners. his reasoning was cause we have so much cap room...I was like wow great reason :thud:

The guy is going to retire from a Super Bowl contender and you think he's going to come to a rebuilding project??

Well he could be a domestic violecne mentor to the younger players.

If we wanted one of those, we could have kept Lloyd. :nana:

What do you think of Corey Dillon in SF to back up Gore? Do you think he would come here for less money he made in New England? Just a random thought on the possibility....

As stated in the original Dillon asked to be released thread. It's unlikely he wants to go to another team where his carries would be limited. Why would he want to go from a SB contender as a backup to a Playoff contender as a back up?

that thread must have sunk deep, i could not find it. as far as him playing for a less contending team, maybe his options are limited for an aging RB and who wouldnt want to play in the west coast...he has a ring already, so why not?

To rephrase part of my first post. HE ASKED TO BE RELEASED FROM A SB CONTENDER. Let that sink in for a second. If his options were limited him and his agent would have stayed put with the Pats.
To add to what you are saying, he asked to be released because he didn't wanna share his role with Maroney. I would like to go some place where he is the featured back.

well maybe after asking to be released from the Pats because of Maroney taking over the starting position, reality sinks in Dillon and that no team wants to play and pay him as a starter and his only options are as a backup..just a thought. then again im sure there are teams foolish enough to pick him up as a starter and pay him what he wants...

Markie here's the original thread. To note, originially it was speculated that he wanted to Retire but obviously he could retire under contract.

OK I'm convinced. The Eagles should bring Corey "Wife Beater" Dillon as the featured back and just line Westbrook up at WR. We all know Fat Baztid is going to throw the ball anyway.......:fishing:

Yeah, I agree.

I don't understand why there was so much media specualtion Dillion was going to sign with X team given he asked to be released from a Super Bowl Contender, and clearly, he isn't in position to ask another team for top dollar.

As I've said before, if your heart isn't in it 100% anymore, you should retire before you get taken out by a lineman who is in 100%.

Which is why he should go to Oakland. He'd fit right in.
