View Full Version : Yeah so I met Mike Rumph...

Know this doesn't belong here and it will probably be moved, but I wanted everyone to see it.
So I was sitting in a chair at the small black barbershop I go to (actually it's a salon with just one barber) waiting to get my haircut. I know the barber and I've been going to him for just over a year now. Everything is pretty chill there. So I'm waiting and waiting, and there are several people there already waiting to get their haircuts too. So when this guy walks in I'm thinking "aww man, I might have to wait longer". To my suprise it was none other than Mike Rumph. He's actually been going there to that small salon ever since he's been here. This isn't in the city of San Francisco. It's in the super small city I live in called Mountain View, which is south of San Francisco. At first I didn't recognize him when he came in. He started talking about OTA's to the barber and I was thinking "hmm...well maybe he's a college student or something". Then he started talking about minicamps and stuff. Then the barber called him "Mike". I was like "WTF it can't be". Surely enough it was. He's a real chill guy. We talked about some football stuff while we were waiting.
I asked him about Brandon Lloyd and what was the real deal on him. Mike said he wasn't that good of a teammate. He said when they won, Brandon would be complaining that he didn't get a catch. He also said Brandon was scared sometimes. Then I asked if it was the same thing with Terrell Owens behavior-wise. He said that Terrell Owens was a really tight person to play with. He'd usually show up at practice and work hard. It's just that the media always blew up everything out of the water. Like that Sharpie thing. Mike didn't even know about it until the next day or something. He said the offense and defense are basically like night and day. They both do their own things a lot of the time. He told me that even Jerry Rice was the same way about things. It's just that Jerry never talked in front of the camera about his quarterback. Overall though, he said it was pretty cool to play with Terrell Owens.
Then I talked to him about Alex Smith and the draft picks. He said that Vernon Davis really is a beast out there. Also that Manny Lawson looked great too. As for Smith, he said that he kinda is starting to get it a lot more now and looks a little better. He really seemed to think about it when answering that question. It wasn't like I was an interviewer or anything either. We just talked and he answered honestly. Not like on television where the players don't really say this or that. Real chill guy.

I met him before at McCarther Ranch in Milpitas during lunch time. He was driving BMW 745I Blk and he was parked next to my BMW M3 and I looked to my right it was Rumph. I shook his hands and told me good luck, this was the first week that he was switched back to corner and the next day he got injured.

Mike Rumph and Jerry Rice never played on the same team, so how would he know. :football:

Rice has visited the 49ers training complex several times since retirment.

Yeah I know, but this is a guy that's on the 49ers and that has probably talked to him personally or talked to people that knew him.
Yeah, but saying that the "only" difference between Rice and Owens was that Owens talked to the press is stretching it a bit. Even if that was the only difference it is surely a huge problem for team chemistry.

man, you shoulda been asking him about our CB situation!! I woulda asked him on what were his chances of starting. I woulda asked if he heard any rumor about us bringing in a veteran CB after June cuts. But good thinking...asking him about V.D and Manny. Im excited to see the BEAST on the field!! I don't think I've ever heard of a receiver in the NFL that doesn't get pissed when they don't get a catch.

Nice, Monk! Thanks for reporting. Rep your way.
Ya know, this would be more believable if it wasn't Mountain View. Black salon in MV? I went to West Valley in MV for a semester and by myself I raised the minority, student body percentage :)
You shoulda asked Mike if he thinks he can earn a starting CB position this season.

Too bad more reporters can’t just sit with guys and give an honest account of a man to man conversation like you were able to post.
Thanks for sharing your story Monk.

there's always 2 sides to a story though. even when it comes from a player's mouth. derek smith called out TO earlier in the season when he complained that TO used to "fake injuries" just to avoid practice.

This is wrong TO and Jerry Rice shouldn't even be metioned in the same paragraph let alone sentence. TO is all about himself not the team that's why he was showed the way out of town both here and in Philly. He did nothing but cause friction on both teams. Jerry was the consumate player and never took a play off just because he wasn't the prime target alla TO. If TO had the work ethic of Jerry Rice he would without a doubt be the one to break jerry's records. Frankly I'm glad he's the guy he is because I really don't want to see those records fall.:sflogo:

They have to be guarded when they're with the media. It's not about the truth, it's about selling advertising and sensationism drives sales. It's just the way it is.
Otherwise, it was nice to read.

Thanks for the info monk! I used to see Terrell Owens around the Santana Row area in 2003. He had a condo there and was always driving around this suped up VW Bug and his Mercedes G-Wagon.
Rice definitely had his moments when he vented frustration at the media. There were a few tirades with some f-bombs mixed in, but he by no means commanded the same sort of persona TO carries around.
Rice made comments about Young early on when he was replacing Montana. He even made complaints about Young being a left-handed quarterback. But in the end, they combined for the most touchdowns by a pair that I believe was or will be broken by Manning and Harrison.
I hope you meet up with him again in a few weeks, and so we all can get a bit more insider insight into the Niners.
Thanks!

I saw Alex Smith downtown San Jose at Tres Gringos around 1 AM. This was whent he Sharks were in the playoffs. He was with Cody Picket and a HOT chick. He was drinking a PINK girly drink and looked really pissed. I was watching him carefully to see how many drinks he was going to have. Glad to see he only had one. He left after a band member called him out. Nobody seemed to notice him or anything. He looked so pissed off and unsociable I didn't even want to bother him. Hope he has some better luck this season or that one girly drink might turn into about 8 shots of jack.

i would be pissed if i were him too, practically every major sport-entertainment company has called him a bust after one year, he'll have some decent targets this year tho
i think i saw mike nolan in a car once, but it might have been a balding guy in a car with tinted windows...great story huh?
