APTOS, Calif. -- The football field at Trent Dilfer's high school will be named after his late son.

The Pajaro Valley Unified School District board voted unanimously Wednesday to approve calling the Aptos High School football field "Trevin Dilfer Memorial Field."

Trevin Dilfer died in 2003 at the age of 5, 40 days after contracting a virus that attacked his heart.

"Trevin was a fighter," athletic director Mark Dorman said. "He fought to the very end. We don't want to forget that."

Trent Dilfer, the backup quarterback for the San Francico 49ers, graduated from Aptos High in 1989.

The Dilfers also made a "significant" contribution to the campaign to raise more than $800,000 to cover the cost of replacing the field's natural turf with an all-weather synthetic surface.

The school also received $50,000 from the first annual Trent Dilfer Invitational, a golf tournament hosted by Dilfer earlier this month.

"Community is really important to us, especially after losing our son," Trent and Cassandra Dilfer said in a written statement. "Trevin was all about community, about having fun, about sharing, about sports."

Dilfer was the starting quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens when they won the Super Bowl following the 2000 season. He also played for Tampa Bay, Seattle and Cleveland before being acquired this offseason by the 49ers.

*********

This touched my heart, as I'm sure it will yours. It helps puts in perspective the role of football in life, especially in the life of Trent Dilver, our backup QB. What a heartbreaker it must have been for him and his wife in 2003.
