There are two well-written books for fans about San Francisco 49ers who
played long ago. I think you should have them in your library at home.

Here is the information on the paperback books:

* Before They Were Champions: The SF 49ers 1958 Season
by Martin S. Jacobs (2002)
DeHart Publishers
MJacobs784@aol.com

* San Francisco 49ers: Images in Sports Series
by Martin S. Jacobs (2005)
Arcadia Press
www.Arcadiapublishing.com

Martin is a contributor every now & then on our MB under the user name of MartyJac.

Martin acknowledges me as his editor in both of his books on the 49ers, as I'm his language technician. There's a photo of me on page 127 (with Ken Norton) and one of Martin on page 124 in the second book. It is one of those illustrated books featuring lots of photos, many of which I'd loaned Martin from my many photo albums of 49ers.

The author has a wonderful "you are there" style of writing which is very fresh and vibrant. His vocabulary is well-chosen; he only needs me for the grammatical aspects (spelling, punctuation)--boring to most males! But his love for the 49ers is very obvious in his lively style of writing.

With all my personal and frequent encounters with our Niners and hundreds of snapshots documenting the experiences, I could probably write my own book, but I've never done that. The thought of taking on such a project is too awesome to grapple with on a reality level. I have only written short articles, never a BOOK! Who would read a book by an unknown author? Probably only 49er FAITHFUL.

Martin thinks I should, though. Maybe a title like "Hobnobbing with 49ers" might grab attention.

If you have a favorite book on the 49ers, please list it in this thread to alert our fans on what is available, excellent, and recommended. Later on, I will list a few more fine books on outstanding 49ers players. Please add to the bibliography.

*******

The first 3 books are inexpensive; the last 3 are more costly but are chock full of photographs.

I am looking for a biography of Steve Young (Jon Steven Young), a hardback book. Don't remember the author or publisher, but it was a good sized book (not a children's book). I once owned it, read it, and passed it on as a gift to the 49ers Booster Club. Now I'd like to have it again in my small collection of 49ers books.

Anybody know of a book on Brent Jones?

I got the Rice book from a friend of my grandparents. Its very nice. The stories are awesome. I am actually looking for a good Bill Walsh book for a book report I have to do on leadership. Any recommendations?

Check out Amazon.com for Bill's book, "Finding the Winning Edge" with a foreword by Holmgren. It might be a bit costly, but you may be able to get a used good copy. Check out other booksellers, too, for used copies. They are quite a bit cheaper (I hate that word).

I don't have one of Bill's books. I just did a search under Bill Walsh's books and the Amazon site came up. Maybe Barnes & Nobles as well as eBay may have them, too.

Good luck!

Amazon also lists some books co-authored by Joe Montana (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index%3Dbooks%26field-author-exact%3DJoe%20Montana%26rank%3D-relevance%2C%2Bavailability%2C-daterank/).

The bottom three seem to be about his career, and seem to be out of print. I wonder if anyone has read these? I thought Montana had a book out when he injured his back, before his return and further success. It may be one of those, I don't know. It might be I'm thinking of, Audibles, also listed there.

The best Steve Young biography book is, by far, "The Steve Young Story" by Laury Livsey.

By the way, I'm glad to tell you that I am the proud owner of all the books mentionned in the posts above !
