View Full Version : How did you become a 49ers fan?

A little change of pace, as it seems the same 4-5 topics keep getting made.

So, how did I, being from South Carolina, with a dad whos a diehard Cowboys fan, become a life long Niner fan? I owe it all to the color red. When I was 4 years old I was OBSESSED with the color red, it was by far my favorite color. So one sunday I walked into the room while my dad was watching football. Up until then I didn't really pay attention to football but the team in the red jerseys immediately caught my eye. I asked my dad "who the men in the red were" he told me the 49ers. Granted, I didn't know anything about football and would yell "49ers!!" even if it wasn't really the Niners playing. It wasn't until a year or two later that I actually started to understand and follow the game, and 49ers stuck as my team.. I've been a Niner faithful ever since.

Good thing I chose that particular sunday to walk in. I could just as easily be a Chiefs, Redskin,Falcons, or *shutters* Cardinals fan right about now.

My dad was a 49er fan. If I wanted to spend time with him, it was either playing chess (he would kill me, lol), or watch the niners. The more games of chess I lost, the more I liked the niners! Actually, I got pretty good in chess too.

I am a well trained niner fan, because they are really the only team I like to watch. I like them, even when they suck. I do like the playoffs, but its a fraction of the excitement I get when the niners take the field!

My bday always fell around the SB. Back when it was at the end of January. So I guess you could say SB parties were my Bday parties. And coincidentally I was usually watching the NIners. Being from Nor Cal I suppported my teams near me. 49ers and Giants, River Cats and Kings, Sharks for a few years then my aunt and uncle moved and no more season tickets.

I became a 49er from watching a Niners game. I watched Rice play an awesome game and while I was cheering him on in awe, it was brought to my attention that he was my distant cousin from Mississippi. Ever since then, I've been rooting for the Niners, even when we were no power house like up until now. Now, I've had the priviledge of passing on the tradition to my children who recognized the 9er symbol before they learned the alphabet!

I grew up in Michigan, but became a niner fan in part because my grandpa lived in the bay area and when my idol O.J. Simpson was traded to the team that cinched it. Been a niner fan ever since.

I used to scream a lot when I was a baby and my Mom found that the only thing that shut me up was football. Usually only 49ers football (she thinks it was the red uniforms that caught my attention). So I would shut up and she would be happy. I just grew up following them.

I saw less and less of the games as I grew up but I watched as many a season as I could and always followed them.

When I was very young, I saw a jacket with Taz wearing a 49ers logo. I liked it, so when I found out that it represented the Niners, I became a fan of them, much to the the despise of the rest of my family, Giants fans....

When I was a little kid I was reading a sportsshop book and there were all 30 (31?) teams listed and I read all those names. I was looking for the most beautiful and catchiest name.

There were the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. I liked those long team names.

As I was reading San Francisco... it made click. Thatīs it. Thatīs the best name to call a football team!! (Iīm not joking!!)

I didnīt knew at this point that ther 49ers already had that tradition and winning history!! :sam:

My dad is a Cowboys fan and I grew up in Philly, but in 4th grade a kid who I absolutely hated said he would bet me a bottle of Elmer's Glue that the Broncos would win the 1990 Superbowl. I knew nothing about football, but just because I hated this kid I took his bet. It just happened to be the 49ers that were playing the Broncos. So when I went to school the next day and collected my bottle of Elmer's Glue I also gained a new love, and that's the 49ers. I've loved them ever since!

Heh . . . I'm old enough I that I used to watch the game and think, "Those Niners are quite a team. Inventing that shotgun thingy and stuff." I was only knee high to a Goldrush Cheerleader at the time.

Later, I saw that they picked up this rookie (I really still didn't know what a rookie was) with a real football player type of name. Montana or something. Then . . . BOOM! . . . 1981 they won the Superbowl!

I was just a kid at the time and seeing that Cardinal and Gold dominating the NFL for years to come settled it. I was a Niners fan!

then being in chicago hearing about the bears etc etc the next year really kept me driven to like any team but them - then for christmas i got a montana jersey and 49ers hat - haven't shifted my stance since then and i was 6 at the time

I grew up in the Bay Area. I loved football and my choices were the Raiders or the Niners. Went to a Raider game and thought there fans were off the wall and never stood behind their team. Went to a niner game fans were loud, intense and loved their team no matter what. So I became a niner fan. :go9ers:

i still remember the day i became a niner faithful. living in michigan (still do), i was 9yrs old when my dad took me to my 1st lions game in 1979..lions got blown out by tampa bay (35-3 i think) and right there i knew that this team sucked but i was a homer then...so i was a 9yr old lions fan..didnt really care about football that much but in 1981 the superbowl was coming to detroit! so as the super bowl got closer my instrest grew. ALL my friends at the time were cowboy fans and thats all they talked about. cowboys this, cowboys that. so....jan 10th 1981, nfc championship game. watching joe montana work his way down field on that last drive was something. and when clark made "the catch" i was in such awe and so happy my friends team lost i was hooked right there.

I was first becoming interested in sports around the age of 7-8. This was shortly after Bo Jackson entered the NFL and for some reason I was attracted to him as a player and the Raiders Black & Silver uniforms. One day I was talking to an extended family member about football, and I told him that I like Bo Jackson and the Raiders. He told me I was crazy and the Joe Montana and the 49ers were the greatest player/team ever. This family member was quite a few years older than me, and needless to say, I was converted immediately. Not to mention that I was a huge Bulls fan at the time and it was nice to have the red connection (haha). So I would estimate that I have been a 49ers fan for about 18 out of my 25 years of my existance... and I can see it ever being another way!

Me and my family went to a Ruby Tuesday's to eat dinner, and like most people here, the colors they were wearing caught my eye. It's kind of stranged because my favorite color was green, and they were playing Philly I believe, so i'm not quite sure why I chose them. But they've been my team ever since.

My first memory of the 49ers consists of two touchdowns in 90 seconds by the Cowboys vs the 49ers in 1972. I was still young so I don't remember the game just the anguish and heart break painted on my relative's faces. I have hated Dallas ever since. The 49er win over Dallas in 1981 was the most emotional experience for me in a football game.

I was 3 years old, and my stepdad (49er faithful) was watching a game with my grandpa (Oldschool Cowboys fan)

I asked "who are the good guys" and my stepdad said "the guys with the gold hats"

Thus began my indoctrination, and I didn't miss a single aired 49er game (grew up in Sacramento, we got most of them) for the next 10 years. Now, thanks to TVUPlayer and bonstonker, it looks like I can catch -every- game from here on out.

Since then I wake up every Sunday at 10 and watch the niners!!!!:bigboss:

I was sitting on grandpa's lap right after super bowl XIV (was 7 at the time), living in Ohio, and he as a Steelers fan. I was going to be heading back with my mom to California soon, and he tells me that its time to pick my own team to root for. And I couldnt just pick the Steelers because he liked them or because they just won back to back. I had to have a darn good reason, otherwise he wouldnt allow it (man, the things parents/grandparents convince us that they have the power to do LOL).

So, back then there was no sunday ticket or anything like that, and seeing eastern teams back then was tough. I could have picked the raiders, as my dad was then a season ticket holder (broke his heard when they moved to LA, and still refers to them as the traiders) but I was being rebellious, and chose the 49ers because they werent the raiders and Id be able to watch them almost every week. So grandpa says ok, the 49ers are your team no matter what, and tells me that they are a terrible team now, and had back to back 2 win seasons, and were on their 3rd coach in two years, but that I will always be a real fan because I chose them when they were at their lowest.

That was January 1979. That was also the year I chose to root for Michigan, simply because I liked their helmets (LOL) and SJSU because my mom and I drove by the University all the time. Was a big sports year for me.

GO GO GOOD GUYS! :sflogo:

I honestly don't know when I became a fan. I remember routing for the 9ers since I was a kid. My family lived in California and are a sports oriented family. My mom is a raider fan( I always talk sheit to her) and some steeler fans, but not me. For some reason as long as I can remember I have been a 9er fan and I will always be a 9er fan. My husband is a Bengals fan and he hates that I am a 9er fan. He said he wants revenge but it isn't gonna happen. So I hope I can see them play this year. It will be hard though since I live in Seattle.

No one in my family liked sports, they hated football. When I was in the 4th grade I decided to play baseball because all of my friends were doing it. The next summer I signed up for football just because I couple of my baseball teammates told me it was fun. I immediately loved the game and I started watching the NFL on Sundays and the only team that I saw that played with HEART was the 49ers. :ninerh:

Super Bowl 24. I was 7 years old then, and everyone in my household was watching the game on TV. It was not uncommon for football (which I knew very little about at the time) to be on TV. What was uncommon was that everybody was watching this game, and there were family friends over watching it too. I payed attention to it and as I watched San Francisco massacre the Denver Broncos 55-10, I fell in love with the team.

Hello,

I was born in Daly City and lived there for a few years and I remember seeing candlestick from the top of my apartment. My father was a Niners fan and I would watch the games with him as a kid. I really didnt get into it too much until 1988 when I was six years old and Mr Montana had the Comeback in the superbowl. I remember watching them drive the ball and scoring the game winner at the end. Yesterday on the NFL network I had a lot of flashbacks because of it. Anyways I became a die hard fan after seeing some of my uncles cry of joy when we won that game. I know I was only six at the time but I realized how much passion there is for our niners. Anyways just thought I would throw in my two cents.

We moved to the bay area in 1987. My dad was a Bronco fan. I was too young to understand football. Then my dad and I met Jesse Sapolu. I didn't know who he was...but my dad seemed so stoked about talking to him. Ever since then, my dad and I watched niner games to support Sapolu. In the fifth or so grade I delivered the local paper to houses on my bike and one of my deliveries were to Mike Walter's parents house. Walter was a LB that spent one year with Dallas and was traded to SF where he spent 10 years (1983 - 1993) and led in tackles (at least some of the years) plus helped win 4 Super Bowls. At the time I was a Dallas fan because my Dad was until I met him. He inspired me to like the 49ers and I have ever since then. I also worked at being a LB which is what I play now to emmulate him. For Xmas he got me a poster signed by the team (i think it was around 1990 cause it has steve young, montana, rice, lott, craig, romanowski, john taylor, keena turner, haley, etc) and after a superbowl they brought back a bunch of goodies for me too.

I never really followed much football before that. just watched some with my dad and since he was a dallas fan i think i said it just to humor him. but have been a loyal fan for about 16 years now so i hope i am forgiven for liking dallas once

My fathers side of the family....all Raider fans.
I, like my father...born in Oakland, raised with the Raiders.

I equivilate my turning away from the dark side and
seeing the Jedi's(49ers) are better to growing up.
Much like religion or forming my own set or values and beliefs.

One day, it just makes sense to you....

That became profound when I moved out to the city
and was working in San Fran's financial district.

I would reflect on how, growing up, I could remember a lot of
my family memebers, all decked out in Raider gear and always
throwing hatred toward other teams, yert when their own team
would loose, they'd turn their backs on them.

Then the Raiders moved to L.A...
and everyone's true colors began to show.

I embraced the class of Steve Young, The Genius that is Walsh,
the commitment that was Mariucci, and above all.......

We weren't all about, "Just Win, Baby"

As a kid I used to go to some games and we'd have a big tailgate (which we dont have now) but i would always sit in the car. I hardly never went to games when i was younger because i was always hungover and couldnt really drink there. But I always loved football.

Then i went away to school and realized what i missed. Now i've been back in the bay and havent missed a game since and love LOVE going to the games with the fam, it brings us together and next superbowl im going and i dont think ill ever miss a game again. GO NINERS!!

Angela--Colorado 9er girl,

We have the same date of birth as football fans!

I used to HATE football (pure ignorance, of course). One day my good friend dragged me along to a Super Bowl party in 1990, the date that crowned the 49ers champs with a 55-10 score over the Broncos. I was very impressed with the athleticism of the 49ers and ever since have been a huge fanatical fan of our 49ers.

My license plate is 9erJan and my email address reflects my dedication to the Niners. I often show up for 49er special events and sometimes get into the newspaper and on TV. Usually I'm shy in front of cameras, but when the topic is the 49ers, I suddenly become animated.

We weren't all about, "Just Win, Baby"

That's nice to hear! I love to meet the players in person. Whether we lose or win games is less important to me than the individuality of the players and getting to know them and have them recognize me. Of course, I PREFER our guys to win because they are trying so hard and feel bad when they lose. But I would never switch to a winning team when our team is losing. That's what I consider a TRUE FAN, a Niner Faithful. Otherwise, they are just football fans if all they care about is winning games. I suppose some fans can't understand this.

I came from India bout 7 yrs ago, i was thirteen. I started playing madden 99, yeah i still remember that crap head but fun enough game. I was persuaded by my cousin to be a cowgirl fan. I remained ignorant for couple of months. Then when i learned more about football, i learned more about niners legacy. And being home team, i started to like them. Now i am proud to say that i'm a die-hard niners fan.

And i also have a picture of me wearing a 49ers jersey back in india when i was around 6 yrs old. Then i dinnt know who they were, but now i know I was destined to be a niner fan. I also had browns hoodie, but who are dey???;)

It seemed like the funniest answer LOL. I won't be a niner fan anytime soon but I respect the franchise and love alot of their former players. Really when it comes down to it alot of the best all time players have been niners whether during their prime (Lott, young, Montana, Rice) or tried to get a ring in as they knew their time may be coming (Doleman, OJ, Rickey Jackson)

My whole family is a buncha packers fans.

It was the game of "The Catch II" and I was just sitting there watching my dad root on the packers. All of a sudden I just start screaming my lungs out for the 9ers and for Steve Young to get it done. I remember the final moment after the Rice fumble when Steve Young dropped back to pass and threw a perfect laser into the arms of Terrell Owens for the win.

The first game I saw was Super Bowl 23 and I became hooked ever since.

I liked the Montana and Young eras but I got more into the Young era when I was in high school.

My Uncle and Pops are big time 49er fans. So I grew up watching them.. My dad has a friend who has been a Season Ticket Holder since the Kezar days. I became a 49er fan in grammar school in the late 80s. This is back when I lived in New Jersey and I grew up watching the Giants and Jets. I was a big Bill Parcells fan and I used to like Bill Belichek. I used to like watching the Giants Defense, but that was about it. Then I saw a game when they played the 49ers and I saw Jerry Rice. I saw how balanced they were and tough even though they were a West Coast team, and I was in awe. So, I continued following them. I saw when they beat Cincinnati, and I was in awe of Joe Montana, and how calm he was under pressure. After that year, I was following the 49ers and Giants until Parcells left NY, then I became a full-time 49ers fan. Even through the hard years I stayed a 49ers fan. I have grown to become faithful to the 49ers. I was a little bothered when they moved from the West Coast Offense and the 4-3 defense, because I felt they were 49ers trade marks. Especially, the offense. But, I believe that Mike Nolan is a good coach, who can become great, and I believe the desicions he has made do benefit the team and personnel, which is important. Besides, I grew up watching the Giants classical personnel run the 3-4 defense, so I don't mind the defensive change. I felt they needed to go to a 3-4 years ago. Although, I dont like the fact we are using a former Cowboy's offense, but whatever works is fine with me.

Pretty much like everybody else who grew up in the bayarea it was either Niners or Raiders. I would just say I'm a Niner cause that's what my mom's family was, my dad didn't care for football he was into boxing more.

Then one time we went down my cousin's (a raider's fan) and they were playing football in the street. Right before everybody started playing kids were calling out names of players that they were going to be. I didn't say anything because I didn't pay much attention to the NFL. Then I remember this one older kid called out "I'm Ronnie Lott"! I remembered that name for some reason. And started paying attention more to the Niners. This was after they had won their first Superbowl, so I was close to 8-9 years old.

Go Niners!!!! :sf49:

I became a 49er fan, though I live in NY and my entire family excluding my brother(Seahawks fan) and myself...How did it happen? well I wanted to choose a rival team of my family because I never really got into the G-Men, but I also hated the Cowboys, Eagles, Cardinals, and Redskins...so I went for a Rival of both Seattle and NYG...so I choose the 49ers due to the color scheme of their jerseys and the fact they are a rival of both teams

I got a Steve Young jersey when i was little and used to wear it all the time. It was passed down to my brother, and isn;t in very good condition, but we still keep it around, even though we have both outgrown in.

Born and raised in Northern California, the Niners were the "hometown" team and were spectacular to a youngster football fanatic like myself back in '89/'90. Dad was also a huge Joe Montana fan, couldn't be anything else but a Niner fan. The players, the team, the prestige, haven't lost my passion for the Niners in the 18 years I can remember them.

My family's following of the 49ers runs three generations deep. My Grandmother was a big RC Owens fan with his "alley oop leaps" and my dad loved watching John Brodie and Gene Washington go deep.

My parents lived in the Mission District of San Francisco where the 49ers was a way of life. Before my parents took me home as a newborn, my dad placed a 70's style 49er helmet in my room (witch I still have) and told my mom that he was bringing a new 49er fan to the world. Since then, I have followed the tradition and brought two of my own 49er fans to the world (the 4th generation)..they too have a pair of new 49er helmets displayed in thier room reminding them that thier is only one team in this world worth supporting "the San Francisco 49ers"

One day sometime around 85 or 86 I started to get interested in football. I sat down to watch a game one sunday and this team in red jerseys proceded to beet the hell outa the other team and I decided that was my team, so happens it was the niners and I been a fan ever since. My first "REAL" football memory was the 1981 Raiders Superbowl. I have vague memories of games before then, but that was my first real memory. My dad was yelling at the TV, getting excited, and cursing everytime the Raiders scored. He hated the Raiders, and I was hooked on football!

Next year we all know what happened. 49ers got off to a rough start, but kicked butt the rest of the season. Montana to Clark for "The Catch" and finally the Superbowl win over the Bengals. I was hooked on the 49ers.

To this day, I hate the Raiders and still love beating the Bengals.

I have always heard of jerry rice and john taylor( hence the sence that i play wr and te in little lg fb and hsfb). Not until that sb i really never watch the niners play. Most part of that was cause it was forbidden to watch any other teams beside the broncos. I was never into the broncos that much and always told myslf that i would never be a broncos fan. Back to when the niners played the broncos in the sb. Evryone at the house that day was wearing there broncos jersey, But not me. I decide to cheer for the Niners. I made a bet with my friend that what ever team won that game was the team i was going to cheer for the rest of my life. Well ya'll know who won that game (55-10):yahoo:  i believe that was the final score. Well i lived up to my bet and to this day ran or shine win or lose. I'll be a Niners fan till i die. WR was always the position i played in football and you cant go wrong with mr rice. since then the last super bowl i really remember was the 94 season when they spanked the chargers. Hi,
I first became a 49ers fan in the mid 1980's, when i bought a copy of gridiron UK (as i live in England), and in there was a double page picture of Joe Montana i liked the colour of the kit and the helmet has SF on the side (my initials) so after thatthere was only ever going to be one team for me.
I have watched every 49ers superbowl appearance since the too close game vs the Bengals.
Over here we get the superbowl live, but it is normally on at daft o'clock in the morning, so i used to stay up and watch thre games live.
Would love to come over and catch a game.
Roll on the glory days of the 80's and early 90's lets hope it's not too long before they are back and our team is where it should be as superbowl champuions once more.

I've been a 49er fan so long, that I can't remember not liking them. Besides, it was easy to pick them over the Falcons. And, I remember each of SF's Super Bowl wins. My parents hate the Niners, so that just made cheering for them even more fun.
