View Full Version : Can DeMarcus "Tank" Tyler play 3-4 DE?

He is listed a DT, with some thinking he could play NT. He has the size at
6'2" 306 (@ combine), but does he have the athletic ability to play DE?
We know 3-4 lineman have to be able to stuff the run and free up blockers for the LBs to pass rush. If we could playTyler at end, that would give us
BY/FIELDS, FRANKLIN, TYLER and a combined 940+lbs.
Now if we could package our 3rd and a couple of 4ths to get back into the
2nd, it would allow us to focus the draft like this.......
1. Patrick Willis
2. Tank Tyler
2. Jason Hill
This addresses our needs, while drafting the best player available.

He would be effective but not great in the 3-4 at DE. He is probably more cut out right now to be a 4-3 NT/DT, but he is a very strong player that moves really well for his size.
IF, and a big improbable IF, he falls to #42 and we take Willis or Meachem/Jarrett/Ginn, I would consider him. I believe we will go Carriker/Okoye or Willis in rd 1 or try to trade down, then go Soliai or Alama-Francis in rd 3.
It's wierd because he looks like a 3-4 NT, but he doesnt seem to have enough mass right now.

I was just thinking of a scenario similar to yours, where we actually use our draft stock or a player to get another relatively low 2nd round pick (somewhere in the first half of the 2nd), but not attempt to move up to get a second 1st rounder. However, my personal preference if available would be DE in the first and WR/ILB with the two 2nd round picks.
Something like:
1- Adam Carriker/ Amobi Okoye
2a- Anthony Gonzalez or Jason Hill
2b- Harris/Abbate/Bishop??? not sure who would be available and a 3-4 fit in the first half of the 2nd round.

Could he? Maybe, but not likely. He's always been a one gap guy. He'd be on a learning curve to make the adjustment to a two gap assignment.

If we had 2 second rounders(I think we'll trade smiley for a second...maybe to the broncos), we could, possibly, go Posluszny with the first second and a WR with the second. I don't know if Poz would fall that far, but it's possible. He's one of my favorite players in the draft. He has one of the highest football IQs in the draft, and my pick to win DROY. If we don't go with him, I'd like Anthony Waters(late 3rd, maybe 4th?) or Desmond Bishop(3rd or 4th?)

tank has been fluctuating his weight at workouts to show scouts, managers, and owners that he can tune his weight accordingly. he's weighed in as high as 323 lbs.
he prefers to play in a 4-3, but said that he wouldn't have a problem in a 3-4.

I would say it's more likely than snowballs in hell, but still not great odds. ;)

in a 3-4 i think he would be another Sopo. great weight room strngth that doesn't translate in our defense. personally i think he needs to stay in a 4-3
Good call on that. I heard he was gettin man-handled all week long during the Senior Bowl; what's he gonna do against seasoned NFL vets ?
