to compete with Robinson as Gore's backup.

Gore is our stud.

Robinson has much to prove.

who will we draft as our 3rd R.B.

I expect Hicks to sign elsewhere.

We need to be 3 deep at R.B.

In 4th round, since we have alotta 4th round picks. 2nd round on offense, rest of first day picks on defense. May be an offensive lineman in 3rd, since Smiley might leave.

I don't think you can just say outright we need to take a RB in such and such round. If our pick is up, and we have a RB rated the highest at that point, then we'll draft one.

your question answered.

Question: Do the 49ers have on their to-do list a heavyweight running back that can move the pile on short yardage situations? We were woefully lacking in that category last year.
—Jim, Vacaville

Answer: Good question. Look for the 49ers to draft a running back in either the third or fourth rounds this year to compete with Maurice Hicks for a roster spot. However, there is a sense in the organization that they over-thought the short-yardage issue last season and that they simply should use Frank Gore in those situations. If they draft a running back, it could be a quick, change-of-pace type runner.

Nolan and Co. have done a good job setting up the draft so that they can take the best player available when it's our turn to pick. Yet we know they won't take one in the first round and I doubt in the second either. So I think anytime after the second round is a possibility.

Gore, Robinson, Hicks.

We don't have a pressing need for a RB, so I wouldn't be suprised if we took one in the 4th round or later, or not at all.

Gore..injury risk

Robinson..young and talented, but didn't show a whole lot.

Hicks..FA not expected to be back.

I am looking at a few guys that have different running styles: Lorenzo Booker, Nate Iloao, and Brandon Jackson.

2nd day pick. I want a short yardage specialist. Gore could do it, by why put him through that kind of poudage if we don't have to?

I got Nate Ilaoa in the 6th in my Mock, but if there was a RB who was BPA earlier in the 2nd day, I would be cool with that.

I'm guessing 4th round.. but it all depends how the first three rounds shake out.

I also think round 4 due to all our multple 4th round picks.... the 9ers will take a shot with one of them.

I like Tony Hunt out of Penn State. I think we could get him in the 3rd or 4th. What does everybody else think?

Go DE or OLB with the first three picks unless Jarrett falls to us in the second. I don't think we need another RB unless they want Leonard from Rutgers to play as a FB. If so maybe 5th round.

The biggest con in my opinion is Ashley Lelie. For all his foibles, Antonio Bryant was a receiver who not only could stretch the defense, but fight for the football and block downfield. In other words, he personified the gritty, blue-collar mentality Nolan is trying to create in San Francisco. It seems to me that Lelie is more a "white collar" receiver. You can argue that the defense improved drastically over the last couple of weeks but that the offense weakened a bit. I have to believe that the wide receiver position is now either No. 1 or No. 2 on their draft priority list.

What game was this guy watching? A. Bryant is not blue collar, Battle is. Bryant was last seen falling down while the defender intercepted the ball lol.:thud:

best back available on the second day. I dont think a pick will solidify us anymore at that position than we already are.

I like Brandon Jackson but as thin as this years RBs are I doubt he makes it past the 3rd, especially since he's a power back with a 4.41 forty time.

He's flying up draft boards, and I've seen scouts mention him as a possible round 2 candidate. Which means, we're probably not going to get him on day 2, which is when I suspect we'll be looking at a RB.

The Fouth, Because it is a very important hole to fill. I would say it is not easy to back up a guy like Gore who is said to be getting less caries this year, You must address it as soon as the chance shows itself

it really depends on who is available. If Bush is there with our second 3rd round pick, I wouldnt be suprised if we swiped him off the boards...if not though...we take one in the 4th round i believe..late 4th that is...

My thought exactly ^__^. He'd be a nice balance to Gore's power running.
