I know this has subjest has been discussed numerous times in the last few weeks. But the more that I think about it, I can't help but get excited thinking about how powerful our offense could be if we were agressive and devised a plan to trade up and draft Calvin Johnson. It seems that most members either feel that the idea of moving up to get johnson is either Fantasy Island or it's strongly criticized as sacrilegious for even suggesting offense before defense. To a certain extent I agree about the defense needing to be addressed first. In fact, the likely pick at 11 in my opinion will probably be Willis or Carriker or possibly Branch if he slips. But I just wanted to see what the faithful would be willing to sacrifice in the way of picks and/or players if the possibility of trading up for Johnson was there. Most boards have Johnson going at 4 by The Bucs and Gruden. What would intice Gruden to give up the pick? At the very least it makes for some exciting speculation.

I'm not bitter, but you couldnt even get the topic in the right forum let alone look at what you wrote and think......Hmmmm since its been discussed before I'll do a search and respond to the 4 million other threads about the subject. its a wast of space, broadband and causes Mods to expend energy by moving the thread.

Of course I am no better for responding and taking up more space, I just cant wait for the draft to be over.

hahaha, ok.Ace, but who the F elected your weah A to the the board police commitee.

So let me pose this question to the board so we can guage the strength of the defense before the offense question. If Johnson were available at 11 (we know he won't be) but "if" he was, would you still draft a defensive player? My point is if you change your mind about defense because he's available then we should go get him if we can.

well no **** we would take him at 11 noone has a problem with drafting him they have a problem with the countless threads about it and how much it would cost to draft him

Who honestly cares if this has been discussed in other threads? Why not just give the man a bit of insight rather than flaming him so hardcore.

Back to the original topic I think we would all love to see it happen, but it's probably just a fantasy. At the same time I think the possibility has to be looked into because he could really make our offense a juggenaut for this year and years to come.

I don't think the idea is as far fetched as some want to make it. The niners could trade 3 or 4 picks to move up and snag Johnson...and still have picks to fill other holes. Don't think for a minute that it hasn't been discussed. I think the possibility makes draft day that much more exciting.

what he said

and this isn't about the trading up to get CJ cuz hey if that happens for a fair price, any one of us would accept it. it's just that it's been talked about already like you said... EVERY possible scenario so it doesn't really warrant discussing anymore.

I've been guilty of starting a thread or two without doing the search engine...I think most have actually. However...with this one...are you effin kidding me??? You have got to be seriously screwing around with people and just fishing for responses, because there can't be anyway that you are actually serious about this.

1-obviously, if CJ somehow, by some weird fluke fell to 11, we'd jump on that in a heartbeat and draft him...either that or take whatever trade was offered to us because we'd be robbing the team trading up

2-if we didn't have to pull a "Saints for Ricky Williams" trade to grab CJ, we'd do it, but that's almost what it would take for us to move up to get him. Do you realize that to move from 11 to 4 (if he slipped to there) it would cost us the 11th pick, our 2nd round pick, one of our 3rd rounders and probably a 4th or 5th rounder to move up. Too friggin much

3-SEARCH....it's a wonderful idea before starting a thread that you yourself said has been discussed a billion times.

4-I agree with everyone that has dogged you for starting this...you really need to do a search, respond in an old thread and hope that someone else responds to you.

5-NO WAY WE GET CJ AND THAT IS ABSOLUTELY FINAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless there is another player with the same initials

We would have to trade too many picks just to get up to let's say...the Buccaneers draft spot. Probably our first, second, third, and maybe something else. I'm not sure how the point system thing works because I haven't looked at it in quite some time, but it would be too much.

Look at it this way. Sure Calvin Johnson may be the next great receiver for years to come, but wide receivers in the NFL rarely make an immediate impact. They do have a learning period that takes some time to adjust to. The 49ers defense was last in terms of points allowed. Sure we added some free agents, but we still have a ways to go until the entire unit becomes a good force to be reckoned with. At least I think so. We can always trade down from the 11th spot and take someone like let's say, Robert Meachem. Who I think can be just as dynamic a receiver as anyone. Or we could even take another person later in the draft. Like Jason Hill. A native from San Francisco that would love to play for his home town team, the 49ers.

Wide receivers are very important pieces to a football team in my mind. Despite that many think the opposite. But with the state that our franchise is in, I just don't believe it would be wise to ship all our draft picks for one player. Teams win championships. Not individuals.
