This last Sunday the 49ers invited season ticket holders that are residents of the city of Santa Clara to come to a neighborhood meeting at team headquarters to discuss the proposed stadium. Jed York gave most of the presentation and took questions and answers, however Dr. York reviewed the basic stadium design at the start. For anyone that’s been following this project I don’t think there was really anything new presented. To my surprise most of the audience questions had to do with parking, whereas I would have expected financing to be the key area of concern, as that seems to be the case with most Santa Clara residents. Anyway, here’s a summary of the points discussed:
1. There are perhaps 4 times when there may be conflicts (parking) with Great America, however these can be resolved. Other events at the stadium can be scheduled to minimize overlaps with both Great America and the Convention Center across the street.
2. Parking will be in various locations around the stadium and at nearby businesses, all within a 15 minute walk or shorter. Public transportation will be encouraged.
3. The current system of tier level pricing for tickets will be maintained, however those sitting in the premium section (the red area in the stadium picture) will likely be paying premium prices. The stadium was designed such that the premium areas are located in one section of the stadium rather than all the way around, so this will allow for premium services to be in these locations only. Exactly what these premium services will be was not discussed.
4. Current season ticket holders will be given first option at tickets. No formal plan is in place yet however most likely you will be offered seats in your similar location, if not better. The stadium design has put more seats on the sidelines so this benefits everyone.
5. The 49ers estimate that by August, if not sooner, the decision will be finalized as to whether the stadium is feasible in Santa Clara and whether or not to proceed with the next step, the Environmental Impact Report.
6. If locating the stadium in Santa Clara does not work out, the 49ers are still committed to staying in the Bay Area and will look for another site, however time is of the essence in order to meet their goal of stadium completion by 2012.
7. The defeat of SB 49 is critical to remaining in the Bay Area.
The meeting tonight before the city council will give the financing details for the stadium. This is the critical question for most Santa Clara residents. My straw poll of neighbors does not show much support right now, hopefully this will change as more research is completed. I hope the city staff and city council can find ways to raise the funds. I’m afraid if it has to go out for a vote, it will be defeated. Still, I remain optimistic that the 49ers will be playing in Santa Clara in 2012.
