This is an excerpt form today's Chronicle:
Hired just after Nolan in March 2005, McCloughan has refined his process for this weekend, which will be his third draft.
First, McCloughan asks his area scouts (the team has six, four of whom McCloughan hired) for straight grades on players, without going into character issues. Character is vetted later and involves looking up newspaper articles for arrests and malfeasance. Most importantly, the area scout is asked to talk to local coaches, counselors and teachers.
"We identify the red flags and we speak to (the players) at the (college scouting) combine and talk to them here if we need to," McCloughan said from Santa Clara last week. "You aren't going to be 100 percent sure." The team will even hire a private investigator if there are lingering questions.
Players with dubious character are still placed on the team's draft board, but their evaluation number is turned upside down, meaning they're off limits.
Knowing this may help a bit in assessing our draft picks.
