Why don't NFL teams keep a big running back in the mold of Toombs on their rosters? Roster limitations?

I always thought having a 350+ lb. running back would be kind of like a sidearmer or knuckleballer in baseball. A one trick pony, but it could be really effective if used correctly (fridge).

Can you say Salary Cap era?

Most teams cant control the cap wel enough to have a 1 trick pony at the RB position.

Would it work in the NFL though? Are NFL D-linemen big and strong enough to stand up a 350+ lb. RB? If not then I think it could be fun to try it out. Imagine when you get to the 1 putting this guy in, his momentum alone will take him that 1 yard. I might be thinking too complicated, but a big bowling ball with enough momentum would be hard to stop. But, I guess you'd have to clear it with your main RB, he might get upset if he never gets to score from inside the 5.

I think it would work but the guy would need to be usefull somewhere else to justify his salary and gameday spot on the roster. Maybe like Long Snapper, Holder and backup lineman or something.

but if that 350lb guy doesn't get up to speed fast enough then his size wont mean much. he wont have that momentum moving forward. plus he is so large teams wont have to worry about the outside and could simply send everyone up the middle where he would have nowhere to go if not get tackled in the backfield. he also eliminates himself as a receiving threat as well as probably having a huge fumble problem. being that big probably isn't easy to secure the football.

I agree with that, but i'm talking about some of these special big guys that have quick feet, to get that speed up fast. You couldn't use a typical OL for it, but if you could find one of those special big guys with quickness, how effective could it be?

i kinda had a thought on the same level as this not too long ago

why not sign somone 7 ft tall or more to play te?he would be a huge target inside the 5,or when you needed to pick up a first with 3 yards to go.

shawn bradley sucked in basketball, why not try it in football

guess im just thinking out loud

Warren Sapp played TE. If he can catch balls lets get Sopoaga and use him at goal line situations.

u no lebron james was a #2 prospect on the country as a WR coming out of high school? can you imagine if he stuck with football? 6'9", decent hands, strong, good speed and insane hops. you could just lob it up there every play. hed be unstoppable

Speaking of Toombs, how about current A&M running back Javorski Lane? He's not quite 350, but he's up there. It'll be interesting if he's able to make it in the NFL as a Bettis-type back.

I currently attend Texas A&M and here is a video I made of Jorvorskie Lane:

There is actually a guy that the Giants have that plays running back/QB for certain goal line and short yardage situations.

Jared Lorenzen is listed as a QB, he's 6'4" and 275lbs. He'll come in for Eli when they just need to pound the ball and gain a yard or two.

that's what the PA rollout is for

2 reasons

1. Salary Cap

2. 52 man rosters
