View Full Version : We all know Matt Millen should have been fired years ago but.....

How in the heyal does he not get fired for not taking this offer........
A month earlier Denver had offered two first-round picks, a second-rounder and two third-rounders, plus veteran linebacker Al Wilson, but when the Broncos wouldn't substitute another second-round pick for the injured Wilson, Millen turned them down. Hmm, he stated that all he wanted from the Falcons was their 1st, both 2nds, and their 2nd next year. Sounds like he wanted Johnson regardless

Oh no i agree he should have been fired along time ago. Just we heard he want to trade out of the 2 spot, I think show he never really wanted to.

No he overplayed his hand, he was being greedy and wanted even more, and no one bit. The Lions have many weaknesses and reciever is not one of them. They have Roy Williams who led the NFC in yards and made the probowl and Mike Furrey who led the NFC in receptions with 98. I would have took that deal in a minute and Matt Millen is still the worst GM in the league. I just feel bad for CJ going to the black hole of the NFL.

Wow........
So he gets an LB that probably wont ever play again, and 5 draft picks likely to be in the last third of the round (probably even more if CJ actually is all that) for the #2. To me thats not a great deal I would not have even done it for the extra second inplace of Wilson. I'm not saying he didnt deserve to be fired ages ago but, this imo is the first drat he has actually aced. Draft picks as high or low as they may be in a round are just a lottery ticket most dont ever pan out no matter how good you are at player selection, CJ at least is the most likely to turn into what he has shown as anyone in the last 3 years.

Millen is the biggest ***** in the history of NFL GMs.
When I heard he took another WR again, this was me: :falldownlaugh:
He turned down two 1st round picks plus more for one WR??
Yesh, has Millen seen the Win-loss record of the Lions the last few years??
What a dweeb.

Wow........
I don't think it was that great of a deal, to be honest because the second first round pick is in 08, which is equivalent to this year's second rounder. The second third is for 08 as well, making it like a fourth rounder.
So according to the draft value chart:
#2 overall = 2600
#21 overall = 800
#53 overall = 370
#85 overall = 165
'08 1st rounder = 370
'08 3rd rounder = 60
Al Wilson = 0 (he can't even pass a physical and was released)
Total = 1765
If you don't downgrade the 08 picks, it still only comes out to 2300 point.
The Lions would have been ripped off in that trade had Millen done it.

Yeah, too bad the trade value chart disagrees with you. On the surface, it looks like a great deal for the Lions but it is actually pretty terrible.

Good point, but I guess we have to remember who is making the selections even if Millen does that trade. If those picks are given to the Pats to deal with it is a steal. Given to millen he probably would have funked it up anyway......:surrender:

But the draft chart doesn't take into account one thing: the Lions suck. They have sucked for a long time. Most of their players suck.
The chance to replace 3 to 4 of their sucky players with players who might not suck vs adding one WR who can't throw himself the ball, can't block for the the QB, and can't play defense in addition to catching isn't going to make the team better.
Not even Jerry Rice could win the big one without being on a good team.
The Lions suck, and CJ alone isn't going to suddenly make them better.

1) Kitna wasn't that bad last year espescially considering that it was his first year in the system.
2) By that logic, they should take the player that everyone else thinks is good rather than leave it up to their own scouting staff. If the Lions suck so bad, then they should take the safer player.
3) Nobody is expecting Millen to win the big one.
The funny part about all of this is that had he taken the trade, the media would have brought up how bad this trade was in terms of the value chart and Millen would still be bashed for not getting more.

very true... i think this was a lose, lose for millen unless someone really gave up everything for their pick... at this point (granted mostly due to his own fault), he was going to get bashed for whatever move he made... so it might as well have been the one he wanted

The only thing that bugs me about him taking Calvin is that I get the feeling that he took him partly because he didn't want to be taken advantage of. I mean, I don't recall seeing a mock draft with the Lions taking CJ. I think that he didn't want other GM's taking advantage of his track record as well as their needs. In some ways, I think this was irresponsible because he really did have much more pressing needs. But at the same time, I think it would be horrible for that orgranization if he were to let himself get bullied into a bad trade, especially considering all indication point to the notion that he will never get fired.

im sure he knows his reputation around the media and even the league by now... it's entirely possible he didn't pull the trigger just becuase he didn't want it to look like he was duped into another bad move...

Given how many pre-draft articles I read about how dumb the draft chart is, I don't think so.
And if Millen isn't trying to win the big one, then why does he have the job?
It's every GM's job to help the team win the Super Bowl.

That doesn't apply to the Lions. You see, when people comment on how bad he is, people ask why he gets fired. When people ask he gets fired, the FORDs gets mentioned. It's a clever way to advertise your vehicles but a terrible way to run a football team.

Well then you've just proven my point, Bush, CJ or any other player is only as "solid" an NFL prospect as a bit of chance. Would you really trade the "supposed" best pick in years (Bush was a joke imo and will never live up to what he was billed to be) for a bunch of picks that may or may not turn out to be decent? CJ is supposedly a freak, like VD, one that will change a franchise, why give that up for what amounts to be a handfull of "whats left from 3/5ths of the leagues" players. None of them were wanted either, they may or may not become stars, but you secure the best possible option to be that star.
The problem is it is not an exact science, and the "safe" bet, is the best way to go if your job is on the line. Dont kid yourself into thinking that just becuse he has not been fired yet, means he has free reign over all drafts for the team till he dies. He is fighting for his job as well, BPA especially in this circumstance it seems the best way to go. He'd get no impact players from the offer, and only had a chance at a lotto number had he taken the deal.

The sad thing is to see a potential talent like CJ wasted in a dead-end organization. Detroit has been stuck in first gear for decades. Just think what Barry Sanders would have done in a better place. Better yet, he probably wouldn't have retired as early meaning we more than likely wouldn't have Emmitt as the all-time leading rusher (nothing against Emmitt, he was amazing). Detroit is where talent goes to die.
