View Full Version : Would Meachem have been a lock for the Titans of not for Adam Jone's suspension?
As most of you know, the Tennessee Titans passed Robert Meachem who was still on the board, and selected Michael Griffin with the 19th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.
And as you all know, Adam Jones' actions have gotten him suspended from the NFL for one season (which he plans to appeal).
On NFL Total Access today, I believe Jeff Fisher stated that Griffin may start out as cornerback.
That being said, if Adam Jones had not been suspended, do you believe Meachem would have been a definite lock for Tennesse? Should they still have taken Robert Meachem regardless of what's happened? In my opinion, I think so. Vince Young needs a dynamic target to throw too. Even though it's rare that rookie receivers make an immediate impact, Meachem does have a pretty high ceiling, and has the potential to develop into one of the NFL's best pass catchers. Another reason I think it was vital, was because Tennessee also lost Drew Bennett and Bobby Wade this offseason.

You'd have to think that had Pacman and Haynesworth not been idiots the team would have did the logical thing and got WRs to help with the Growth of VY. I don't like to 2nd Guess fisher that much because he's proven to be consistent whenever the GM/Owner doesn't gut the team but this move is very questionable. Sure you lose your playmaker on Defense and want to replace him as corner and as a returner but I'd still have gone with getting your offense that lost all it's WRs and it's starting RB a play maker first before addressing either pass rush or pass coverage.
Jeff Fisher is a defensive coach, therefore, his first inclination is going to always be to draft defense. With that said, if Adam Jones is there, they probably try to move up and draft a defensive end, with receiver being the second choice. Don't sell VY short as a passer. He'll probably never be Peyton Manning out there, but VY, not Matt Leinart, led the NCAA in passing efficiency in 2005.

I don't think that's true. In my opinion he drafts a player based on team need. Like Eddie George, Steve McNair, or Vince Young. All team needs at the time. Even when the Titans were in the trenches in terms of defense in 2005, they still decided to go with Vince Young. But the front office also has a say in it as well obviously.

Despite the pimp from the Rams fans, the Titan's fans I know weren't exactly upset about loosing either WR as neither is, as far as they're concerned, more than a #3. They also feel that have more than adequately replaced the two players in the draft with players with more potential.
Also, WR may not be quite as bleak as 49er fans who just peruse the stats would believe. David Givins got hurt last year and only played a few games for them while injured. They're expecting a lot of production from him this year. And when injuries started racking up, the guy that ended up being the #2 starting WR on the ended up being Brandon Jones, not Bobby Wade.
So, they have last year's #1 back from injury and the guy that won the #2 slot over Bobby Wade, and performed quite well when all things are considered, back. Plus they drafted three WRs and, sooner or later, a decent WR is going to shake loose.
I think where they're more upset is the fat, lazy back they took last year and the work-out warrior running back they took this year while letting their backs go in FA. Now, in the grand universe of Tennessee Titan's fans, this is a tremendously small sample.
But in light of the past couple of years, it seems to make sense.
