Chris Mortensen has said on ESPN that Smith is not a true franchise QB. Im not sure if I agree, but it makes me wonder... If Smith were in this years draft, where would he get picked? I know he wouldnt be #1, and I dont think he would even be a first round pick. I believe, if Smith were in this draft, he would go at some point in the 3rd, or possibly 4th round.

No one really knows whether he'll be a franchise QB. As for where he'd go this year, mid to late first round would probably be a good projection. He lacks the resume of Leinart, the athleticism of Young, and the armstrength of Cutler. But is has good size and decent speed and is very bright, so while it is probable that he would not be the first QB off the board, I still think there would be a good chance that he wouldn't be the last of the four.
But the truth is all anyone can do is wait and see.

3rd or 4th round?? Im no nfl scout, but there is no way that could be true. He was the FIRST OVERALL PICK for god sakes. We would not have picked a 3rd-4th rounder at no. 1. You are out of your mind. ESPN hates on us constantly, they make it out like we are going to be the worst team in the history of the NFL. So i never put much into what anyone on ESPN says about us, or really about anyone else for that matter. you really have to take everything they say with a grain of salt. Salisbury is a hack, merril hoge is a complete ***** (he said he would take kellen clemens in front of young and leinart) and mike golic isnt too far behind him. So relax, I wouldnt be surprised if Alex turns out better than both young and leinart. He has all the skills, and he showed he could do some damage with enough protection. Lets not hate on Alex, hes our guy and him being a 3rd or 4th rounder this year is completely ludicrous in my opinion.

LOL not a first round pick, 4th or 5th rounder? WOW you serious? He might be the 4th out of the bunch (ill add Rodgers in as well) but no way he drops that far.
It depends on all the post season workout/senior bowl game type things.
I do know that Alex Smith had some unbelievable individual workouts which are what shot him up the charts, not to mention he's probably the smartest of the bunch, and he had an outstanding jr. year.
(you could flip Leinart and Young)
1. Matt Leinart
2. Vince Young
3. Alex Smith
4. Jay Cutler
5. Aaron Rodgers

If he stayed his final year AND lead UTAH back to a BIG bowl game and won, i think he might go ahead of Vince Young

His workouts were phenominal. He proved to have better touch than he was given credit for, and every team he visited was floored by his maturity and how smart he was. They also liked his work ethic. I think BIrwin has it right, he would probably be flip flopping between the 3rd or 4th QB taken. This 4th and 5th ROUND junk is coming from people that saw 1td and 10int's this last season. You wouldnt have that info going into the draft this year. He was also a winner, not as big a school as USC, but he won.

Is Smith a Francise QB? At this juncture we can only hope. Smith was rated very close to Rodgers last year. As we know, Nolan wanted to trade down as no one believed that Smith or Rodgers had shown enough to be taken in the top five. This opinion was apparently shared by the other rteams as Rodgers tayed on the board until the 24th pick.
Where would he be selected in this year's draft? Although this year's draft is thin on the offensive side of the ball there are 3 QBs with legitimate 1st round ratings. If we were to place Smith in this years Stack using his Sporting News rating of 8.6 as criteria (just barely a francise rating), he would come in even with Young but ahead of Cutler. The absloute accuracy of this score is not meaningful but the relative or ordinal value is the product of of good analysis and is about as usfull as any for supporting this type of "guess." Using this method indicates that he would be taken in the first round, especially since there are not many players after the 20th pick or so who look like they have 1st round packages.

Agreed third QB taken mid to late first.

I think its hard to say if he would be a first rounder. If Niners didnt take a QB last year and say Packers didnt take one as well..lets see what we have
Saints could take a QB (doubtful with Bress)
Titans
Jets
Packers
Niners
Raiders
Lions (maybe)
Cards
Rams (maybe)
Ravens
Vikings
Niners (again)
Thats around 9-12 teams that COULD take a QB. Lienart and Young would def be gone and then you could flip between Smith and Cutler (I think Smith would go before) and Rodgers being the last of the 5. Only one I see that would drop out of the first would be Rodgers and thats just basing the info of him droping so far last year. Of course we really dont know, but I doubt Smith droped out of the first round.

IMO.
2nd Round. 4th QB taken behind Leinart, Young & Cutler.

Blade, what is the difference between Cutler & Smith? Both have the size and arm strength needed in the NFL and both seem to be smart enough to handle an offense. Smith led his team to winning records and bowl victories while Cutler was unable to do either. Why would Cutler be that much of a prospect than Smith? I would have it Young, Smith/Leinart in a close tie, & Cutler.
