View Full Version : 49ers have interest in Paul Oliver (Sup. Draft)

The 49ers could have some interest in Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver, who has entered the July 12 supplemental draft.
Oliver passed up the April draft, planning to return for his senior season. However, he decided to declare for the supplemental after reportedly becoming academically ineligible.
Scot McCloughan, the 49ers vice president of player personnel, said he'll send at least one scout to observe Oliver's June20 pro day in Athens, Ga., and might decide to go himself.
As a junior last season, Oliver started all 13 games for Georgia and limited Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson, the second overall pick in the draft, to two catches for 13 yards in the regular-season finale.
At 6-foot, 208 pounds, Oliver has the size to match up against bigger, more physical NFL receivers.
"He's an interesting guy," McCloughan said. "He played at (a Southeastern Conference) school, and he started every game for them last year. There's something to be said for that."
Oliver probably would have been a third- or fourth-round pick if he had entered the regular draft.

Considering that he would have been a 3rd-4th round selection in this past draft, its tough to see the 49ers giving up more than a 5th or 6th round pick next year. CB is not really a need position for us at this time so if this guy impresses the scouts he would most likely be taken before the 49ers would consider it.

Sounds like he could be one of those "diamond in the rough" type of guys. It goes without saying that holding C.Johnson to that yardage is pretty darn impressive but he could of gotten toasted by every other receiver he went up against all year though too. Either way, it doesnt hurt to check him out.

actually... I've read that he'd be considered mid-late first/early second next season... obviously the fact that he's ineligible drops is value... don't know how much we want to invest in another CB... now if Gaither enters the supp draft... it might be interesting... or Purify as a late pick...

A CB with size from a big name school, sounds like a guy McNolan would take a chance on...

You can never have enough good CB's, I'd be fine with using a selection in the 3rd or 4th round.

Eh, I don't know about using a 3rd on a #5 CB but I'd be willing to use a 5th rounder if possible.

I'd give up a 3rd on him. But I'd rather have the Maryland OT, if he decides to enter the sup., don't think its official yet.
Also I think Oliver would've been a 2nd rounder last year, somewhere in between Chris Houston and Josh Wilson. But its hard to judge without having his combine #s.
And last, I don't think we are very interested in him at all, otherwise McCloughan would go himself for sure. It's not like early April when theres more than one pro-day a day, and he has to choose which to go to.
Gaither has the disposition of Manuel White. The guy is soft and dumb. I doubt we're interested in him.
You're right about Oliver's possible draft position had he declared for the April draft. McCloughan did say he may go himself, that shows a bit of interest. Whether or not we put in a winning bid is the other story. I wouldn't mind it, but it does seem we're actually pretty deep at that position already.

I'd really like to see this kid. The question that you have to ask is "is he an upgrade on what we have now?" At the moment we have Clements, Harris and Spencer at the top of the depth chart. After this positions are up for grabs. Plus Harris will be gone in 2-3 years which would be enough time to really learn the role for a youngster like Oliver. I would definitely be putting in a 3rd round bid depending on how well he interviews.

take a risk on Paul Oliver... With Walt Harris getting old and Shawntae Spencer not looking like a sure fire starter, the 49ers should use a 3rd or 4th round pick on Paul Oliver and I hope they do. I hope they select this kid in the supplemental draft and see how he pans out. He has good skills and good athletic ability. If we take him and let him sit and learn for a year... AND then he becomes a role player and a very good starter 2-3 years down the road... It could be huge for the 49ers. He would have been a 2nd round pick this past year and maybe even a first in this upcoming year. So why not take a chance. If he doesn't work out it's only a 3rd or 4th round choice, but if it does work out it will be great down the road.

5th round for sure. No way a third though. A third rounder is Jason Hill, so there is still a lot of value with the third round pick and even the fourth. In the fifth I would jump at it. I just can not see us spending anything higher on a position that is set for atleast the next two years maybe longer if Tarrel Brown pans out.

You do realize he was the top rated senior corner going into next season by most people, right? Ive seen him labeled as a top 10 pick by some draft pundits, for whatever thats worth.
Someone, most likely not us, will use a 2nd rounder on the kid, I can see Tennessee doing it easily, maybe Miami.

agreed, some may say a two isnt worth it but he has a lot of skills you look for in a corner. he also shut down Calvin Johnson, something like 2 catches 13 yards.

I've read that Reggie Ball, former GT QB, took him out of the game more than Oliver did but regardless, Oliver is recieving alot of praise. Same with Weddle.

Not a chance he goes top 3 rounds. Brooks last year was twice the talent of Oliver with less downside. Everyone on here thought he was a sure fire first to second round supp draftee and he ended up going after that. A good rule to go by is add 2 rounds to the guys round talent. If he's a first round talent (brooks) with character concerns he's a third round Supp draftee.

I disagree, Oliver is a very talented corner (1st round talent), and while I won't say that in on field potential he overtakes Brooks, he has a much higher downside than when Brooks was taken last year coming off an injury plagued season and wieght concerns. I believe fans where salivating after Brooks much more than teams where.
Plus, in general, CBs are more highly coveted than LBs.

Ball was one of the worst college QBs I have ever seen play, and he wasn't much different in the UGA/GT game last thanksgiving, however, Oliver did make plays to deny Johnson catches and at least one touchdown that stands pretty vividly in my memory.
