According to Scout.com, a league source has indicated that the San Francisco 49ers will select Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk over Maryland tight end Vernon Davis is both players are available at the No. 6 selection in the first round.
It is unknown how reliable this "league source" is and rumors often run wild during the week leading to the NFL Draft as the media attempts to guess what teams will do.
While Hawk would fill a more immediate need, Davis has been described as a player that the team can't pass up on. The addition of Davis would add another big and fast target for young quarterback Alex Smith.
It has been well known that these two players have been at the top of San Francisco's wish list. However, most figured that it was in the reverse order with Davis as the 49ers' first choice.
Take that for what it's worth. I've said it before, Hawk is overrated.

Hawk is considered throughout the NCAA, the media and the NFL and one of the only bulletproof picks in this draft. Why do you think he is overrated?

I wouldn't go that far..
But: Hawk > Davis
Similar talent/caliber, but OLB is more of a need.

Overated for the 3-4 OLB spot maybe but the guys going to be an absolute stud in the 4-3. A major tackle machine me thinks.

I think we just want to put some pressure on Green Bay to select Hawk over Davis if both are there at 5. I would put Davis & Hawk on equal levels but I dont think Hawk is an OLB in our 3-4 base and that is why I would pick Davis over Hawk. I also think that Davis has hall of fame potential while I think Hawk can be a pro-bowl calibur player. Good but not great.

It would honestly be a very tough call. Hawk feels like a very good RILB in the 3-4 based on his size and speed. However, he doesn't seem to be as good a pass rusher to play ROLB and I think using him as a coverage guy at LOLB would be a real waste. As a ROLB in a 4-3, I'd jump all over the chance, especially with a pass rushing RDE.
The only way that Hawk makes it to 6 is if teams in the top 5 decide to take someone among the top that are not: Ferguson, Bush, Williams, Leinart, or Hawk. So Davis, Young, or Cutler would need to make a big splash.
Neither should. If we stand pat and get 'stuck' with Hawk, that's one heck of a good fate.
If the two were up against each other though, I think that I would still go with Davis but I'm highly certain that Hawk would be the teams pick.

Well, I've only seen him play once, TiVo'd the bowl game vs ND. He made his fair share of plays, even a few near the goalline, but it seemed he was mainly good in pursuit and had trouble shedding blockers straight up. If he had trouble vs collegiate FBs and Guards, how will he hold up against NFL guys?
But hey, what do I know, that's just my own opinion, if the Niners do pick him I hope I'm dead wrong.

What has Hawk shone for u to believe he wouldn't fit our 3-4

I would be ok with Hawk falling to us at 6 Wiz only if we than make some trades with our current players to make him a better fit for the 3-4. Maybe we could trade Ulbrich or Smith for a mid-round pick but if Hawk is the only one left at 6 I would feel better if we traded down a couple of slots and pick Lawson mid first and maybe a CB or TE with our pick at 22.

what info are you basing that he cant play OLB in a 3-4 he played it in college when they ran the 3-4 and he did very well. but not just that what makes you think that he cant do the 3-4?

Ulbrich has played OLB before, so maybe he can just shift out and Hawk in?

We have brandon moore for LOLB, so it's not "more of a need". We are thin at LB and need a couple in the draft, but we don't need one at #6. We do need a ROLB though, but that is a pass rushing position and hawk cannot play that position in our system.

With Singletary I'm sure that we can get the most out of Hawk. If all QBs are on the board then we are going to get some trade offers. If that happens I am all about trading down a few spots and getting Huff. Bush or Mario won't fall to us for certain. If either are there we take them. D'Brickashaw shouldnt be there either but if he was could we really pass up on him. If it's Vernon and Hawk. You have two high quality, high character players. You could trade down a few spots or get a contributor to your team with future pro-bowl written all over him.

Vernon Davis makes alex smith a good pick, if you pick Hawk, then your #1 overall QB is a waste of time! you make the call! if hawk goes to the pro bowl but Smith doesnt improve enough to win a lot of games, what have we gained, Julian peterson of 2003 when he went to the pro bowl, the rest of the 49ers cheering him on at home on TV! only this time around they will have it recorded on their TIVO!!!
