View Full Version : Why not build by Pac Bell?

I've been reading for a while here but had the urge to post for the first time...
Please be forgiving if this sounds like a horrible idea, but I just literally thought about all this in the past 20 minutes or so. But why not build the Niners' new stadium downtown by Pac Bell? Since we want to build in other parking lots (GA in Santa Clara) why not take one parking lot away from the Giants? They're losing the lease in a couple years so I don't see why it hasn't been considered a nice spot for the Niners. It's in the heart of the city, look what the area has done for the Giants (Also a huge Giants fan).

I can't imagine how they could fit another stadium around there.

A great idea 5 years ago before all the new building and UCSF moving in. You might still be able to squeeze the stadium in but parking would not be around the area like "they say" it will be around SC.
Another area close to AT&T which might be on the November ballot which is just a little further south is Hunters Point.
I did not know the Giants were losing their lots, what are they going to do?

Well they took action as late as this year. I usually take BART and Muni to games as I try to attend 5-10 games a season but with prices going through the roof it's hard now so I've only been to 2 games this year and will make it to one more game by the end of the month.
The last game I went to was about a month ago and drove because I had a group of 10-13 people (fun times and we all stayed through 13 innings of that night game vs Atlanta). There wasn't any parking and they directed me and several other cars to one of the Pier Warehouses and I guess they opened to parking. It's a decent idea, it seems safer than the lots but parking costs are still a ****** at $30!
But yeah, there's an article in the Chronicle a couple months ago about the city wanting to do some land development in that area instead. So I say why not have the Niners move in one of the lots across Pac Bell?

I never heard about SOMA as a site aside from the 49ers saying "it is not an option" in there question answer site about why they chose SC

It's not a horrible idea. It's just not workable. There's not enough land to build a sports complex that large in SOMA. Taking one parking lot away from the Giants won't even make a dent. Imagine if the Giants and 49ers were both playing at the same time. We're talking over 100K people. I wouldn't want any part of that traffic.

i just hope that AT&T park lasts forever because if that parking lot is replaced there will be literally NO room for a new stadium anywhere in S.F.

Oh yeah, it'll be there for a while. It's already as huge as a SF icon as is the Bay Bridge surprisingly.
Yeah I guess it's a little small for another stadium plus parking. I'd like to see what they make out of that lot in the near future. Hopefully it's something good

Something good i wish they would put an arena there and bring the Sharks over (not gonna happen but a man can dream) :secret:

If fans seem to think the Santa Clara site is a small parking lot then the one you're proposing is microscopic. There may be a parking lot the size of a stadium to build it on, but where would everyone park? The Giants stadium only holds a little over 40k and needs those two lots. Meanwhile, the team's stadium is expected to be upwards of 65k seats and need even MORE parking than the Giants Stadium. And you've also got a whole side of the stadium butting up against a waterway (and yes, I know it's the same in Santa Clara).
Just to make it even plausible the city would need to clear out most of the land across the water along Berry Street, build an extension of 4th St. across the water, clear out the warehouses along Channel and Warehouse St. and most of the land south of Mission Rock St. Then you'd actually have enough parking space and probably one of those areas would become a parking garage for both teams. But then there is probably enough concern to want to widen some of the roads to handle the gameday traffic. Overall, you'd need the city to exercise a LOT of eminent domain to get the sites, more to do the roadwork, and there is the entire lease deal.
It would be a nice site if more open land was around it and it had better traffic access, in my opinion.
I say build on the Farallon Islands. There's plenty of water for boat parking and imagine catching all that fresh fish for your tailgating.
And when the winter storms hit, now that's homefield advantage...:tease: :dance2:

My favourite ridiculous idea is still building the stadium on Alcatraz

That's even better. will need to level the whole island though.

The 49ers should have saw the potential of the Pac Bell Park area during the Giants first year. Lots of Public Transit options, a marina for those that want to travel to games by boat. Look at the University of Tennessee and the University of Washington where a good portion of their fans travel by water.
Oh well.

Why not golden gate park??? Nothing but bums and hippy wannabe drug addicts there anyway? There's plenty of room there.

Haha, yeah - we should just move back to Kezar Stadium. It was renovated in the early 90's, and the reduced seating capacity of ~9000 would ensure we can still sell out games despite how bad the team is! ;)

look at google maps there are spaces close ti it right next to the bay. It just seems like it would destroy downtown and pier traffic
Maybe brisbane has room its so close to SF

Finding space is one thing. Let's say you find a space large enough for a stadium as well as surface parking. Then you've got to ask...
1) What is the transit situation. Is it along mass transit routes and how many types of transit access it easily? How close aree major highways and are the roads between there and the stadium capable of holding the traffic?
2) What is near the stadium grounds? Are there restaurants or retail nearby? Is it in a district that can handle the noise of regular events? Does it have nearby entertainment and resources for large numbers of fans?
3) What is the social service availability levels in that area? Is there a nearby hospital? Does it have a nearby fire and police station?
4) What is the infrastructure? Are there large sewage lines close by? How about water, electrical, data and phone lines? Is suitable support a block away from the site or will the team need to tear up half a mile of streets to reach a large enough sewage line?
Anyone can find open space. Heck, the team could buy out some land in Napa or Sonoma flat enough. The problem is not only does such a site have none of the above (few roads, open region with less dense social services, lower utility support, etc).

what about just south of the stick now? just a mile away between bayshore BLVD and 101. (if your not sure where it is its right next to the
cal-train runs and stops there (bayshore stop)
you can take it from the station near at&t park or down in gilroy to the bayshore stop
RIGHT NEXT TO HWY 101
sits right next to the bay
sunnydale muni stop
and a couple blocks from the sunnydale stop there is the Arleta Ave Station (muni)

For some reason, I read the topic title as, "Why not build by Taco Bell?"
