NEW YORK — The National Football League is launching a makeover of its red, white and blue "NFL Shield" logo that adorns everything from player jerseys to fan T-shirts and hats.

The league is creating a leaner, meaner version of the iconic logo that will debut at the NFL draft in April, 2008. The revamped shield will be slightly taller and thinner, with a new football, fewer stars and darker colors, says Lisa Baird, the NFL's senior vice president of marketing. The redesign marks the first changes to the shield since 1980.

At the NFL's annual meeting this spring, commissioner Roger Goodell talked about the NFL Shield as the "envy of the sports world." The league has been careful to make an "evolutionary, not a radical change," says Baird.

It's... kinda different.... but it'll grow on me. I can understand the reasons why they did it, which I didn't quote on here but are explained in the article I linked to.

Great. Now all of my jerseys are gonna look outdated... but I like the logo.

Same here. I wouldn't have even noticed. I guess that's the effect they were going for.

Also known as a waste of time.

Some goofball graphic designer probably got a fat check for that too. At least Fabie would have put some cool abstract stars in there or something.

nice subtle changes. I like the darker colors, but like more stars like the old version.

Well if you think of it this way...

If it was a radical change, it would be like when the 49ers tried to scrap the familiar "SF" oval logo on the helmets to that proposed (and hideous looking) "49ers" logo. So many fans got mad with that proposal, they went back to the SF logo and just tweaked it a bit to what you see today.

The NFL didn't want to mess with creating a new logo. This was a way to keep an identity piece, but also update it.

LOL! I'm sure with nine kids and a father who likely isn't active in the lives of them... that's a LOT of Maury material for years!

I don't care what the logo looks like as long as the league keeps guys like Vick, Pacman out, it's all good.

And I'd have to say it's a darn good shield, too, because it aptly defends the Oakland community from witnessing a winning season!

Seriously. They removed a few stars and made it slimmer. Way to go out on a limb with change.

Wow, that is great news. I have been really concerned that the NFL logo looks outdated and needs an upgrade. *******ing ridiculous.

What bothers me is that they probably paid someone a few million to design that?
