So far, I've just been watching parts of the UVA/WY game, and Chris Long is looking pretty good...albeit against Wyoming's OL.

Post your observations here...I probably won't get to see much today, so I'm counting on you.

lets see

ND is really bad
Michigan might have been looking ahead to Oregon but they have some major issues on that Defense

Illinois is Illinois

Wisconsin is starting to clamp down and is running the ball down Wash St's throat

Iowa is mediocre and is beating a solid program in NIU

Ohio State has some fast freshman

No Tommy Blake tonight for TCU. Good opportunity to 'scout' Chase Ortiz (the other DE), who looks like he's added some weight, and has been looking good so far.

Noel Devine got some playing time with West Virginia and had a good game. Something like 58 yards on 8 carries and a TD. He's the next in line after Slaton goes pro.

Also, Darren McFadden is retarded good. Looks like he'll go over 200 yds on the ground today.

Raji was academically ineligble for the game.

I watched three games and taped three games.

I go into each game with a short list of players I already know that I like and want to watch.

Utah @ Oregon State
Senior RG Roy Schuening is a very good run blocker. He had a couple of really nice blocks. Junior LG Jeremy Perry is also a fine run blocker. I'd take either in San Francisco. MLB Alan Darlin is very active and reacts instantly to the action. He is quick to come up and fill the holes and pursues the ball until the whistle. He's not a day one guy but looks to be very draftable.

Utah's Martail Burnett will make a very good OLB in the 3-4. He is quick off the snap and has a solid arsenal of pass rush moves. He pursues well and didn't embarrass himself against the run. DT Gabe Long was someone I wanted to see a bit more of. He started out well with a couple of nice plays against the run and a TFL but disappeared midway through the second quarter. Oregon State's interior linemen (including OC Kyle DeVan) really looked good.

East Carolina @ Virginia Tech.
East Carolina LT Josh Coffman is a very good athlete. He shows good mobility in both pass and run blocking. Junior DE Marcus Hands had a terrific game. Really outstanding! He owned Virginia Tech. LT Duane Brown. Hands is approx. 6' 5" 280 lbs. and is very powerful. His bull rush was a thing of beauty. He rolled over Brown on more than one occasion. He was always in the backfield and put good pressure on the QB. I think he ended up with at least one TFL a fumble recovery and a number of pressures. I like him a lot! Sophomore NT Jay Ross is someone to keep an eye on. He plays the run well and gets a good push on the pocket. He's approx. 6' 3" 315 lbs. Redshirt freshman FS Melvin Patterson looked good as well. I think he got two TFL. East Carolina looked very good... in a losing effort.

Hokie sophomore RG Sergio Render had a solid game. He played strong and did a nice job on short pulls. He didn't look especially athletic or agile however. I liked him last year and expect him to keep getting better. None of the Virginia Tech. DTs impressed me much. Neither Carlton Powell or Barry Booker seemed to get much penetration. Kory Robertson did a solid job versus the run when he took over for Booker.... but nothing outstanding. ILB Vince Hall was slow getting to the ball carrier. He always seemed to be the second or third guy there. Junior CB Macho Harris was solid. He returned an INT for a score and defended at least one other pass. CB Brandon Flowers also defended at least one pass and took good angles on blitzes.

Houston @ Oregon
Houston junior DT Ell Ash (whom I like) didn't have an especially good game. Oregon's junior OC Max Unger (former LT) man handled him quite a bit. On at least two occasions he stood him up and walked him seven yaerds downfield. I expected more from Ash. DL Cody Pree (another junior) looked rusty. He did little... unless you count two off-side penalties.

Oregon junior OC Max Unger is a superior blocker. He looks good run and pass blocking. His technique is sharp and he stays with every block until the whistle. Junior FS Patrick Chung started slow but eventually hit his stride. He hits hard and tackles well. He had an INT and a blocked punt.

There are others in these three games that did well.... or looked bad, but I didn't really focus on them too much.

A few notes from the K-St/AU game:

AU:
- Our OL looked like we lost 4 starters, and Cox was getting beat up, and Tate had no running room. Carl Stewert looks like he's regressed as a blocker, and overall, too many guys were missing blocking assignments and blitz pick-ups...it was pathetic.

- Our secondary is inconsistent. When the intensity level was high, we rose to the occasion, but for 31/2 quarters, it was frustrating to watch.

- Quentin Groves is an absolute beast, and K-St did nothing to try to slow him down. Horrible coaching by them, they're lucjy their QB only left with a sprained ankle...could have been much worse the way they were leaving his blind side exposed. The knock on Groves still is his coverage skills. He gave up two big plays (one for a TD, one for a 1st down on 3rd down) while in the drop.

- Our DTs look like monsters...definitely bulked up since last year. If Pat Sims stays motivated, it's going to be a fun year to watch our front 7.

- Sen 'Derrick Marks (DE) took a couple of quarter to adjust to his new position, but he looks like he's going to benefit from teams keying on Quentin, and have a big year because of it.

- Prechae Rodriguez (WR) has taken the go-to role away from Rod Smith, and he looks like he's going to have an outstanding senior campaign.

K-State
- Jordy Nelson (WR) looked impressive. He can do a little bit of everything from the WR position, good mid-round prospect for April.

- Ian Campbell (DE) was disruptive, and gave King Dunlap (our best and most experienced OL-man) problems.

- I was very impressed with Marcus Watts (SS). This guy is always around the ball, and always making plays. He's a adbass out there. Great special teamer as well. Keep an eye on this guy if you watch any of their games this year, he's fun to watch.

- Antwon Moore (OLB) is being touted by his coaches as a Troy Polamalu. I could kind of see why. He's another guy that flies to the ball, and is all over the field.

- Reggie Walker (MLB) looks like he's going to be a good player for them this year.

Washington @ Syracuse
Washington Redshirt freshman QB Jake Locker looks well on his way to stardom. He is fast, athletic and mobile. He reminded me quite a bit of a right handed Steve Young... only a more deliberate runner. Redshirt freshman LG Ryan Tolar had a very good game. He kept Syracuse DT Tony Jenkins in check the entire game.... and did it with almost no help. DE Greyson Gunheim will get looks as a 3-4 OLB. He has a terrific motor. I think he had two sacks (both in the second half). Sophomore MLB Donald Butler looks real good. He has good speed and range and was real solid versus the run.

Syracuse DE Jameel McClain had a solid game. He could play OLB in the 3-4. He appears to be athletic and fairly agile. He put some pressure on the pocket and played the run well. DT Tony Jenkins was the player I really wanted to watch. He didn't accomplish much. I think he may have gotten into the backfield once (very early in the game) and did very little against the run. Washington LG Ryan Tolar made sure Jenkins spent most of his time five yards deep and off balance.

LSU @ Mississippi State
I imagine almost everyone saw this game but here is my two cents just the same. LSU WR Early Doucet caught eight passes (I think) and scored a touchdown. I'll not argue our "possible" need for a #1 WR.... but Doucet looks the part. Junior LG Herman Johnson is a monster! He gets very good movement in the run game. Oft-injured RG Will Arnold didn't start, and as far as I could tell... only played one series of downs. Glenn Dorsey had a typical game. Even though he was double teamed quite a bit of the time... he still ended up with 4-5 tackles and 2 TFL (1 sack). He was very good at shedding his blockers and making the play against the run. He uses his hands very well. DE Tyson Jackson was pretty quiet. He did a solid job in containment and stringing out plays but wasn't much of a factor as far as pressuring the QB was concerned. Sophomore DT Al Woods had a very easy sack and equally easy fumble recovery. He pushed the pocket pretty well. I didn't see sophomore DL Ricky Jean-Francois play. I don't know his number and may have just missed him.

Mississippi played well for about 20 minutes. Junior LT Michael Johnson looks to have some potential. Junior DT Jesse Bowman started but was rotated in and out quite a bit. He plays the run well but gets little pressure in the backfield. It was his first game at this level of play and he'll likely get better. DE Titus Adams could have a future at OLB in the 3-4. He had a great game (against a converted DLman at RT). Only the QB spent more time in the backfield. I don't think he got a sack but he was all over the QB and caused Flynn to take flight on numerous occasions. FS Derek Peques was injured returning a punt. Sophomore CB Anthony Johnson looks like he has a bright future.

Hobbes2d

He could disagree but he doesnt have better pro potential then Ryan does. Brohm has a weak arm, limited mobility due to his knee injuries and he's not durable. He's going to get destroyed in the NFL.

It's indefinite:

Draft Scout Player News
09/01/07 - When senior DE Marcus Harrison suffered a knee injury in the spring he was supposed to miss the season opener and possibly two to three more games. Instead, he worked hard to come back and appeared to be well on his way to starting the opener before he was arrested on Aug. 24 on a felony drug charge and several misdemeanors. Harrison is now suspended indefinitely, leaving another hole on an already-uncertain defensive line. His replacement, senior Chris Wade, saw limited playing time last season after transferring from a junior college...nfldraftscout.com

I enjoy these type of threads. I will visit often. I only get to watch 3-4 games each week and usually choose those that have some players I feel will fit with our Niners. I do my real viewing after the season, when I can dip into the 40-50 taped games I'll likely have by then. Until then, threads like this one allow me to read about the games and players I have yet to see this season.... without getting some sports writers' spin.

Oklahoma St @ UGA- As a bulldog fan I was worried about this game with team being so young this year, if OSUs offense is the best UGA faces this season I wont worry to much more. A couple observations from the game: Im not sure about how good OSUs defense, but Stafford looked excellent, he made good decisions with his throws for the most part, my only hang up on him is when he runs I think he is careless with protecting the football. I have been hearing about the good things about Knowshawn Moreno for a while now, and last night I finally saw what everyone was talking about, very good quickness and speed. The coaches protected the youthful line pretty well alot of wr and rb screens although when the line needed to they performed pretty well. The defense looked good, well disciplined, sniffed out screens pretty whenever OSU tried them.

I just tried to enjoy the game for the most part so I don't have much in depth to report about OSU, but WR Adarius Bowman and RB Savage looked pretty talented to me, and I thought Ried, OSUs QB threw some pretty impressive throws early on but later in the game he was just harrased non stop and didn't have all that much time.

I actually think Stafford is going to be a good QB. He was throwing some NFL caliber balls in the Chik-fil-a bowl game against VT's vaunted defense last year.

Wasn't able to watch the game much yesterday, because my DVR only lets you watch one or the other between the two channel you're recording, and my wife had the other tv occupied. I tried to catch a little bit of it before Tenn/Cal started...didn't catch much though.

Stewart ran the ball about a dozen times or so for 60-70 yards. He had to share carries with sophomore Jeremiah Johnson, who at 5' 9" 213 lbs. has some good overall talent.

Jaison Williams only caught a couple balls but did score a touchdown.

NCAA football is a joke. without a playoff system who cares. If you're not in the preseason top 10, you cannot win the title. Who really runs around with a banner and chants, we're number 11, we're number 11!!!!

Can you imagine if the NFL was like that.

If you weren't the Colts, Patriots, Ravens, Chargers, Bears, Saints, Cowboys, or Panthers, the season is already over.

Next Question.

Nobody's forcing you to watch college ball, or post whinny little rants like this. You take the :elmo:

Texas got outplayed, they still can't run a power run game out of the zone read, couldn't punch it in when they got close.

Colt was floating passes all throughout the second half rather than zipping them in. Their Veteran LB core got beat all game long and didn't register many tackles. Especially up the gut.

Their defense looked very suspect to short, crisp routes, like Texas Tech usually runs, them and the Cornhuskers must be pretty happy right now.

If they play that way this weekend, TCU will walk away the winner.
