Tim Rattay, signed last week as Arizona's only backup, replaced Warner

Rattay, today, first week with team: 12-24 159, 0 TD 3 INT

Dilfer, first start after 1+ year w/ team : 12-33, 128, 0 TD 2 INT

Actually it was a good thing that we got rid of Rattay. If you remember right, we received a 6th rounder for him from Tampa Bay; I believe we used the pick on Marcus Hudson, who is a more valuable player than Rattay.

Plus, Dilfer is better to have on the team than Rattay. We didn't get Dilfer for his playing capabilities...we got him to mentor Alex Smith, something that Rattay couldn't provide to the team. Is Rattay better? Probably, but I'd rather have a slightly worse 2nd string QB if it meant that he was helping our franchise QB be a better player.

Lastly, to be fair to Dilfer, Hostler is our OC. Last time I checked, no one is doing well with him calling the plays (except for the opposing defense).

Therein lies the problem. Backup QB is far too valuable to be reduced to "mentoring". Nolan should have hired a new QB coach or something along those lines instead of sacrificing such an important position. I knew from day 1 that signing Dilfer was going to be costly and it has been so. I had no problem getting rid of Dorsey and Pickett but we should have kept Rattay or gone after a better backup than Dilfer.

But there's a difference between a player and a coach when it comes to mentoring. And besides, at the time we signed Dilfer he was considered a solid back-up QB. And honestly, what "good" back-up QB's are there? The only 2nd string QBs that you hear about or whom people consider good are the ones who light it up when the starter goes down, that create a QB controversy and are therefore inevitable starters a la Tony Romo, Matt Schaub, David Garrard, etc.

We could have gotten numerous backups that would have been better than Dilfer. Signing him was Nolan's biggest misstep since taking the helm of the team. Dilfer's last mediocre season was in 1998. He's meandered between subpar and pathetic since then. I find it unfathomable that 9 years later, Nolan was ready to put the fate of the team in Dilfer's hands should Smith go down. I'd much rather have a QB controversy than a backup who plays like he's under water.

Well, it's not like those guys stirring up the controversies were on the market for cheap...if they were going anywhere, it was to be a starter. So they weren't realistic options for us.

Plus, statistically Dilfer wasn't that bad on a terrible Cleveland team. I think his rating was somewhere in the 70s....sounds like your typical back-up to me. I really just think your overrating how bad Dilfer is honestly. Point to his stats all you want this season, but then again check out everybody elses' on our offense this season and they got nothing either. Basically it's not fair to judge Dilfer, or any other player for that matter really under an OC like Hostler. He makes everybody look a lot worse than they actually are.

And maybe there were better players than him, but there sure as heck weren't any available than would have been a vast improvment. Either you take a slightly worse QB that can mentor your QB, or a slightly better back-up that Alex doesn't benefit from at all. Either way, the quarterbacks aren't going to be any good so might as well take the mentoring one.

It's not just this season. Dungy ran him out of TB because he was so bad and he's been diminishing in ability ever since then. Some of his passes last week looked like he had never taken an NFL snap and when he tries to scramble away from pressure, it's like watching a newborn calf try to stand for the first time.

 I agree to an extent. His passes are pretty weak and that is frustrating. Definitely not someone you want starting. But once again, I honestly don't think there are THAT many back-ups better than him. It's probably extremely frustrating for other fans watching their teams back-up when the starter is out, too. Heck, look at Ferrotte today, and I remember the Seahawk fans going crazy about Wallace last year (am I the only one who thinks he has to be a full-time WR? He always makes a play when he lines up on the outside). So yeah, my point is that it's not just us. I think other fans are frustrated with their back-ups too. We aren't alone.

I think so, he actually had a few decent deep throws. One of which his WR bobbled into the air and basically handed to a defender.

Is Boldin back soon? I thikn Rattay would actually do decent if so.

He looked good in tampa last year, I think if he has some time to work with the WRs he may have a decent game. (of course, I'd rather they just keep losing though)

Yes if given time to learn the system with those WR's and the line being decent this year he could be a decent starter with AZ. Nothing great mind you because he's mistake prone, but decent.
