View Full Version : Santa Clara??

The City of San Francisco seems bent on not letting the name San Francisco go with the team if they move to Santa Clara..

"The team is bound to the Candlestick site by a lease that expires next year. Newsom said the city attorney was investigating whether the team would be allowed to renew that lease and still search for a stadium site in Santa Clara."

The mayor even questioned whether the 49ers could represent themselves as a San Francisco team if they didn't play there.

"I'm not sure people can just take advantage of a city without being in a city," he said. "You can't just say, 'Hey, we're going to pack up and leave.' "

The Yorks seem to believe they can do whatever they want here. They believe they can move the team to Santa Clara and keep the names "San Francisco" and "49ers". I believe the city of San Francisco can easliy defeat the Yorks in court and strip them of the "San Francisco 49ers" name.

Its nice to keep saying Santa Clara Valley is the "South Bay" as if the people of Santa Clara are refering to the "South San Francisco Bay Area" but, the truth is that the people of the Santa Clara Valley want no part in, or any connection to, San Francisco. The people fo Santa Clara Valley do not see themselves as "Bay Area" residents, they are "Santa Clara Valley" residents. They take great pride in this title and they will not let anyone call them Bay Area residents.

Make no mistake about it, the people of Santa Clara Valley will be rubbed the wrong way and not tolerate (for long) a team in their Valley being called the San Francisco 49ers.

If the City of San Francisco takes this to court, as I am sure they will, the City of San Francisco will win. The Yorks will not be allowed to move the team to the Santa Clara Valley under the name " San Francisco 49ers."

I grew up in Fremont and the Great America site is but a stones throw away from my childhood home. I promise you, I would rather ride a Donkey bare back to Candlestick than a limo to Santa Clara. This will be the end of the San Francisco 49ers.

i was born in cali but had the great fortune and luxury of growing up in the ohio valley, so im not current on the politics going on there.. but it has always seemed "weird" for the team to move to santa clara and keep the san francisco title.

How does the NFL feel about this move? The Yorks can talk all they want about moving the team but if the League says no... well, it is not happening.

The NFL believes the move is a "no-brainer". They believe the team should be in Santa Clara if thats what the York's want and the NFL is willing to give the York's a big chunk of money to help them make that move. The York's have alot of business friends in the Santa Clara Valley and they want to benifit that community while strengthening their power and wealth in the Santa Clara Valley.

wtf are you talking about?

I grew up 15 miles away from Great America, in Los Altos.

we ARE part of the bay area. I can't even grasp how you could even THINK that we weren't.

And as for them moving, it's either move to santa clara, or wait for the city to clean up toxic waste from their proposed site.

I like the team being the San Francisco 49ers, but do you want to go see games in a hazardous waste dump site?

If they can give them a better offer than the dump site then I would hope the 9ers would stay in san francisco. It is their home after all.

and for Gavin Newsom's point... What about the Giants and Jets? Their stadium is in New Jersey yet they're BOTH named after New York.

Since I don't live in the Bay area, actually I have never been to the area, I don't know the political/business aspects of this proposed move. Thanks for your reply. I guess I better start getting used to the name Santa Clara (Insert name here).

The Dallas Cowboys play in Irvine Texas, and their new stadium is being built in Arlington, Texas. They didn't have to change their name. I don't even know why this is an issue.

It is all cheap politics.

The City of San Francisco will win the case in court. The NY Giants and Jets situation is agreed upon by NY and New Jersey, it is a completely different situation.

The City of San Francisco does NOT want a Santa Clara team and the City of Santa Clara to falsely use and advertise a Santa Clara team as being in San Francisco or as a San Francisco team. They will win that battle in court. If you think Santa Clara and the Yorks will win that battle in court you are mistaking.

The Dallas situation is also one that Irvine, Arlington, and Dallas agree on. Now let Jones try to move the team to San Antonio or to Austin and see if the city of Dallas or the courts will allow him to keep the name " Dallas" Cowboys.

I believe it is the San Francisco Bay Area??

Irving is 20 minutes from Dallas and Arlington about 30 minutes from Dallas. It is in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

Keeping the San Francisco name is legit.

The question is how much is SF going to fight to keep the name if they move? Or were they just making those statements as empty threats?

I guess they could fight under the terms of making a new football team in the future(New League) and wanting to keep the name. Not sure how else they could win the case if they were going to fight for it. I assumed it was just a block they are putting up to add to the list of reasons to stay in SF.

There's absolutely ZERO legal prescedent for the City of San Francisco winning a case like this - they don't own the rights to 'San Francisco'. At most, they MIGHT have a case if the 49ers decided to call themselves the "City of San Francisco, California 49ers," but past that, t's nothing more than an empty threat.

Well, I must admit, there are a few opponants to the stadium deal - but none of them are real football fans.

Seriously, after taking a good look at them - I doubt any of them have ever held a real football in their hands. Let alone participated in organized sports.

And no - I don't call cowering in the corner during dodgeball "participation".

I imagine that your definition of a "real football fan" is someone who is willing to spend his/her life savings or put their City into hock for a football team.

I will admit that at one time I was a football fanatic; even today I still like the 9ers.
But Pro Football has changed and in my opinion not for the better.

Greedy Owners:

Colts moving from Baltimore in the middle of the night.
Raiders moving to/from LA
Rams to Saint Louis
Greedy Players:

Deion Sanders going from 9ers to Dallas
Julian Peterson to Seattle
This list is just too long to go on

Rule Changes:

Don't hit QB at knees, Don't hit QB above neck, QB can slide, QB can throw ball away
Don't chuck receiver after 5 yardss, Pass Interference can now be 50yd penalty or more!
Lack of Class:

A player jumps up & down and points after making a good play; his team is losing by 21 or more points
TO's antics
Well I won't go into the crimes that players have committed
Rice who was the greatest receiver of all time would just walk off the field after a TD; most players now have a celebration dance?

I used to enjoy watching Fran Tarkenton scramble; "Real Footbal" is gone. Today everything is about money!

I will not disagree with any of the above. Well, except for the first sentence.

Would it have been better if I had left out the word "real"?

What I was suggesting is that I've seen a few of these opponants who reminded me of the last person to ever get picked on the school yard, who signed up for HomeEc classes instead of Physical Ed. who wore glasses held together with packing tape and wore plastic pocket protectors to school.

I think they simply hate atheletics and oppose the stadium because they really want a library instead.

Don't get me wrong - I think we need libraries too. But I have yet to see one that serves garlic fries on Sundays.....

Is someone required to be a football fan - real or not - to have an opinion on whether or not their municpality builds a stadium?

"Pocket protectors?" What, is it 1950 again?

Is someone required to be a football fan - real or not - to have an opinion on whether or not their municpality builds a stadium?

"Pocket protectors?" What, is it 1950 again? To answer your first question - no.

But then again - the general function of this particular message board is to serve football fans. And you are?

One might guess that the only reason a non-football fan would visit this message board and this particular forum would be to find out some truth about the stadium.

If that is the case - I commend you for taking time to visit and seek the truth.

However, if you came to obfuscate and confuse - think again. This is pretty discerning crowd - they like to see facts, figures, statistics and quotes.

And by the way, if you think about it - all those pocket protector wearing classmates of ours now rule the world ... Anyone else wish they had spent more time on calculus and less on the athletic field?

The people who don't want the stadium built are probably the type who sit weeping in front of the boob tube watching Oprah and sipping tea.

I don't think ANYONE is opposed to a stadium being built.

Just with WHERE it is built, and HOW it is financed.

Unless I've missed something.
