View Full Version : Norv Turner experiment is a failure

Other than the blessing of playing in the AFC West, what on Earth do the San Diego Chargers have to be thankful for?

I'll answer that one — absolutely nothing.

The 5-5 Chargers have grossly underachieved in 2007 after being a dominant squad under Marty Schottenheimer in 2006.

The Norv Turner experiment, as predicted, has failed.

I wouldn't put this on Norv alone. It's sort of how teams go to the Superbowl and then have a down year. SD didn't go to the SB last year, obviously, but they did play at a very high level. It wasn't out of the question that their playing would suffer.

Indy is starting to suffer due to injuries just now. It didn't seem as if they would suffer in the first half of the season but it's taking a toll on their team at the moment. Even Peyton Manning's game has gone down as his O-line has been shaky. (for those that think a QB change fixes all. Bad line=bad QB, except for Vince Young)

While SD doesn't have guys out the guys that are in might not be playing at 100%. Keep in mind that SD doesn't know how to win consistently also.

It's not just the coach, the players have to take heat also. It's not Turner's fault AP ran all over their defense. Also, though Tomlinson (L.T. is Lawrence Taylor) is only getting 19 carrier per game, he hasn't shown much this year at all. Not to say the guy isn't good because we all know he is but his play has gone down also and it's not just the carries. The playmakers will find ways to make plays. Tomlinson's play has gone down. Whether it's he, his body, or Turner, can't tell but it's not happening.

Then there's Merriman. Is he having a down year or was it really steroids that were helping him last season? Only he knows that. When you make plays you make plays. Not Turner's fault Merriman was taken down by MJD. Rivers, bad decision making. Should have kept Brees. It's easy to look good when you have a RB that takes the load off you.

It's hard to repeat as SB winners and part of that is that your body can only take so much. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chargers made a late run or if they picked right back up next season. This season, I don't necessarily blame the players but you can't blame bad execution and decision-making on coaches.

Most teams that have a bad year after a SB run is because of either injuries (See Colts) or they lose multiple players to free agency or retirement (see Bucs, Steelers, Ravens).

The Chargers don't have either of these problems.

The only thing that changed in SD is pretty much the entire coaching staff.

And much like the 49ers, they have a 1st time OC calling plays.

i do agree with you, but you can tuse the colts as an example they are not having a bad year even with injuries.

Good point, they are winning.

But they are in no shape right now to get back to the Super Bowl.
