If he's still on the board at 30, we'll be lucky.

I've seen him as low as mid 2nd.
We'll get him.

Don't base your opinions on some random mock drafts you read. Especially at this point in the process. Groves is one of the top 3 pass rushers coming out, he'll be gone before we pick.

We shall trade up then. Throw that chump Jennings into a deal if necessary, we don't need him anyways.

He would be an ideal 1st round choice for us. Hope it happens, he can be our version of Suggs

Is OLB really a the most pressing need? I mean, we've got Manny, Brandon and Jay Moore, Parys Haralson, Roderick Green, Banta-Cain...
I like Groves a lot too, but I can't see us taking an OLB in the first round. I still think we'll take the BPA on the defensive line or at WR (assuming we don't trade for Ocho Cinco).

Manny is definitely a starter on one side but he has become our premier coverage linebacker. On the other side we have TBC starting whom I believe everyone can agree sucks and is a career back-up. Brandon Moore is a MLB, an MLB that can't even unseat Derek Smith at that. Jay Moore has yet to even play an NFL game and was a day 2 pick. Parys Haralson has been playing decent, but he has yet to really show he deserves to be a true starter. Rod Green barely even made our team. I think everyone can agree that we need a pass rush and why not get one of the very best pass rushers in the draft?
I personally think he is the right choice for us. The only other positions we could upgrade immediately is WR, OL and DL/Pass rusher. This class is stacked at OL and there will be plenty of possibilities at WR with FA and trading. I think the BPA at our point will be Mr. Groves and he screams "sure thing".

You don't know that.... he could go off at the combine and be a top 15 pick. It's possible he could fall to us, and would be great here if he did, but right now it's a pretty big question mark if he'll be around then. If he's not there I like Tommy Blake as well, who probably will be there.

Groves is a good player, but not needed. When the Niners will be picking Early Doucet (WR, LSU) could be available as well as Chris Ellis (DE, Va Tech), if they are lucky enough Lawrence Jackson (DE, USC). I think anyone of those players would be additions.

I'd rather take Okam or Dre Moore. Or trade our 1st round pick for a guy like Suggs or maybe even Peppers...

Of course they would. LOL. Early Doucet has been injured all year so I'll hold off on evaluting him fully. As for Jackson and Ellis, we could most likely get one in the 2nd and they would both have to add alot of weight if we stick with the 3-4. Unless you want them to play OLB which I don't think either is suited for.
Mario Williams was rated to go 6th overall at this point in the season a few years ago. The combine can move players significantly.

I look at our D and think we really need to address pass rush with some size. I liked Lawson when we drafted him but am starting to get Andre Carter flashbacks. They should really stop having him cover guys and just turn him loose as a pass rusher. To me they have minimized his strenths ie. J Peterson by making him do too many things. Use him as an elephant LB and draft a pass coverage type in the second or third round. For the first pick I want pass rushing size ie. Calais Campbell, 6' 6" 278, Miami (Fl)* or Tyson Jackson, 6' 5" 292, LSU* no more 250lbs converted LBs. We can have a pretty good rotation with one of those guys, McDonald, Oliver and Moore.

I think Lawrence Jackson could be a good fit in our 3-4 DE. There is also a possibility of us jumping picks if we give up our 1st and 2nd. If there is someone McNolan likes in the mid 1st I could see us jumping for it.
As of right now, I would like to see this happen:
1st: Lawrence Jackson DE or Chris Ellis DE
2nd: Frank Okam DT or Malcolm Kelly WR
3rd: Fernando Velasco C or Jamey Richard C
4th: QB
5th: OL
6th: BPA
7th: BPA

Groves started the year somewhere in the top 10 SR prospects and has only fallen because of three dislocated toes. He's been playing with them all year but once he's healthy he'll will shoot all the way back up. Count on it.
He difinately won't be there when we pick. If he is I would love to have him. We would have one of the best young LB corps in the league. Manny, FA, Willis, Groves would be amazing.:sflogo:

Manny was a 2nd rounder before the combine, then he when off and we had to move back into the 1st to get him.
Manny was always a first rounder IMO. Just because some of these half-arsed draft sites change their rankings every other day to keep you coming back doesn't mean scouts thought he was all over the board.

6 to 1 isn't that significant of a jump. He was among the 6 blue chip prospects, meaning he could go anywhere in the top 6. HOU took the player that they felt they needed the most. Again, I seriously doubt they visit the sites that we're stuck looking at for our information.

Pass Rush is a GLARING need. OLB provides that in the 3-4.

I think you're forgetting about Manny Lawson. Our pass rush has actually improved drastically over the last four games and since the signing of Roderick Green. We need to really be concerned about our defensive line, guys who can occupy the offensive linemen so that we CAN get a pass rush.
B.Y. is gone. There is no guarantee that Douglas will be back.
That leaves us with Melvin Oliver, Ronald Fields, Ray McDonald, Isaac Sopoaga (maybe), Aubrayo Franklin, Joe Cohen... Sorry, but I am not comfortable with that rotation one bit.

I can agree D-line is a big need as well, but I'm not nearly as sure about our pass rush as you are.
I see Manny as a 5-7 sack guy, we really need a 8-10 sack guy to play opposite him. So who will start opposite him? Nobody we have on our roster right now...Roderick Green is a pretty good pass rusher, but he didnt spend the whole year as a FA for nothing...he can't start for us.
So while I can see us going DL round 1, I might rather see an OLB unless we can find one in FA.

I see where you're coming from. I, personally, am really high on Tommy Blake. That is, assuming his interviews come back with people thinking he has a good head on his shoulders. I think OLB is a big need for us too.
I'd like to land Suggs or someone like that in FA, but if we don't I would expect us to address that need via the draft and in the later rounds. Our needs at D-Line, WR, and O-Line are much bigger than OLB.
