He is a talented wide receiver, big, 6-1 210, and has hands. He is possibly going to be available when the Niners pick in the late 20's, at least that is where he is projected to go right now. Any thoughts on drafting this guy out of LSU?

If we were to not get Groves, he is definitely the next guy in line.

If I were a Bills fan, I would be probably drooling over Dan Conner.
Could you imagine Conner and Poz reunited?
I bet you what happened against the Giants wouldn't happen again with those two in.

Ou D nasty with him there...I hope Poz comes back strong next season...I wish we got to see more of him this season...I bet he would have put up good numbers but prolly not P Willie type numbers.....

I am interested in seeing how Early Doucet does against Michael Jenkins. It should be a good matchup in the BCS title game. Doucet's physicality matches up well against Jenkins. It could be a good indicator of how he will do in the future.

In what respect? This guy made it on a team with two other first round wide receivers.

Well, I have nothing to base it on. He just seems like he would be a bust in the mold of Rashaun Woods, especially if he were to come here. He wouldn't be used and then lose the passion and then be gone. I think Jason Hill is far more talented than Doucet anyways.

We do need some clarity in our wide receiver situation and I can see any more rookies getting lost in the muddle. Point taken. Unless Doucet instantly turned into a #1 wr then he'd just be a copy of what we have already.

I am hoping that if there is the chance of drafting Doucet, he would step right into the #1 wide receiver position. Take the role that has not been clear for a few years now. I think that with his size and speed he could be a true #1. I think that he would make an impact and give whoever the QB is a WR with speed to get deep and size to go up and get the ball.

Early Doucet isn't that good. He's not even better then Craig Davis. Hell Demetrius Byrd passed him up as the Go to WR this year and he started the year like 4th or 5th on the depth chart.

I personally think we need to solidify other positions such as the QB before we start looking at the WRs. Without a consistent QB yet(hopefully Hill can fill that void), especially Alex Smith, those early round WRs will be a waste.

You mean drafting a WR in the 1st round? or not at all?

I hope that a WR will get drafted somehwere, I thought the possibility of Doucet was intriguing. It will be interesting to see if there are any gems at WR in the later rounds after the bowl games have taken place.

Not in the first, doubt in the second, maybe with our third.....maybe.

If not even in the third round, then when draft a WR or is it time to go out and get one via FA? The current WRs are not going to get the job done. Only VD seems to produce when he actually gets the ball. So what is the receiver solution?

I'd love to have Early on the team, but I'm not convinced on drafting him as early (no pun intended) as the 1st or maybe even the 2nd round. He's a solid and dependable receiver, but he's no Calvin Johnson or Randy Moss, and I'm honestly not convinced he can come out of college and be a reliable #1 NFL WR. Hate to say it but I don't think the guy's ever been true #1 WR material. His best years were with Davis and Bowe. That's why he got so many looks last year. His injuries this year don't help either. In the meantime Byrd, Tolliver, and even Lafell (when he wasn't busy batting drops directly into Patrick Lee) turned into just as effective playmakers. I love the guy and he plays with a lot of heart, but I just don't see him singlehandedly turning around a pro franchise's (and definitely not ours) passing game, at least not in the short run.

Never payed much attention to him but he sounds like a 4th rounder.

Drafting a WR in the third has not really been working out to well for us as of late.
It seems like every year people say all offseason how we need to address other positions but when the season starts everyone says we need a #1 threat. Now I am nto saying Early is that guy. (Truthfully I have not gotten in to reading up on draft picks yet.) But at some point we have to get over the Rashaun Woods thing and try again. Personally I would like to see us make a big trade for a #1, not Darrel Jackson but a true #1. We NEED someone, anyone on the outside that demands a double team or saftey help.

Looking back to the West Coast Offense years, I think the team needs big recievers in the 6'3 to 6'5 range who can catch. As much as the Steve Smiths of the world are great there are really only a few that size that excel. Our QB throws high and our WR never seem to be able to break tackles and get YAC yards not to mention our redzone offense is struggling. If we draft a Limas Sweed and maybe sign a free agent ala Bryant Johnson from Arizona I think that would make the difference.

Sweed and Johnson would compliment each other very well. That would be a very nice offseason for our offense.

So by NOT drafting him in the third would make it a goog pick? Or not drafting a WR in third? Past mistakes lay on the player selected not the position and round.

I don't know if anyone remembers that the term YAC or Yards After Catch was created to describe the Niners recievers 6'4 Rice and 6'2 Taylor 6'2 who would take 5 yard slant passes and turn them into 90+ yard touch downs.

We need a big guy. Malcolm Kelly, Adarius Bowman, and Limas Sweed are all about the same in physicality - 6'4, 220. One of them in the second round would be nice.

Having watched LSU the entire season, I am very wary about him. I really liked the idea at first but am now starting not to like him as our first rounder. He is a kid who will usually get open due to route running and finding open spaces in zones. He isn't incredibly fast and he isn't a massive target either. He is basically a Darrell Jackson that can catch and has better skills after the catch.
What this team needs to a guy who needs to be double-covered and I don't see Doucet as that. If we took him with our second pick, about 10 slots down, I would be happy.

Sweed is the only guy who will likely be around in round 2. And I'm not sure he is really that great of a prospect.

I think a receiver only has value for us if we take him in the second round and beyond. No wr we have a chance at picking could step into that number 1 spot so we might as well spend money on a veteran one. If they're selected in the 2nd then expectations arent as high and they can progress naturally.

I hate to burst your bubble, but Jerry Rice was never a shade over 6'2"...I think you were thinking of J.J. Stokes!!:ninercaphell:
And J.T. was 6'1"!!

I am saying that we either need to try and trade for a #1 or spend another high pick on one to improve our chances of hitting on the pick. There have been to many mid round WRs drafted that just get lost in the depth chart.
