I think everyone already knows this
I was always a big Cowher fan and when James Brown asked Marino, Sharpe, and company on the NFL Today who was better Montana or Brady he said Montana since he won more Super Bowl rings and there is no question Montana is better.
Cowher knows more about football in his pinkie than Jimmy Johnson knows in his entire body.

I'm not really a big fan of comparing QBs from different ERA's. The talent level is completely different, I don't know if it's because of free agency or the inconsistencies with most organizations. The 80's and early 90's had a ridiculous amount of talent. Just look at the QB's playing in that era... Marino, Elway, Montana, Kelly, Aikman, Favre, Young, Moon, Simms, Kosar etc etc. That's an amazing amount of HOF'ers(or borderline) playing in the same era. There have really only been 2 HOF'ers playing in this era and it's been brady and manning.
The rule changes are something else to consider. It was definitely harder to complete a pass 10 years ago than it now. The first year the illegal contact rule was implemented/enforced was the year Peyton Manning threw for 49 touchdowns, on top of that the quarterback completion % for the divisional round of the playoffs this year was 69%, which is absolutely unheard of.
With all that said, all those factors shouldn't take anything away from what manning and brady accomplish, it's just something to consider when looking at the guys from the other ERA's. IMO, Montana's still my guy, but Brady's definitely in the conversation. I've seen Montana's entire career(every regular season/playoff/superbowl game) and I can definitely see where the comparisons come from. Both have the same level of competitiveness and the "me against the world" attitude. Another guy that should be in the conversation, but is hardly mentioned, is Johnny Unitas. He was Joe Montana before Joe montana and I believe he held every QB record when he retired. Just my 2 cents.

That was an impressive post. You should share your insight more often. I agree with what you said. I don't think you can compare both quarterbacks given the factors involved. Bill Cowher is kind of bold to making such a statement anyways, seeing as one's career isn't even over yet.

Good post. The only one here who I've read that understands comparing different eras, and the difference in passing and stats in different eras.
Awhile back I made a post about looking deeper into receiving stats within the last 30 years. The post was on Rice vs. Moss. I outlined some telling facts comparing the last 3 decades. In the 80's, there was 1 100-reception season and 90-reception seasons were almost unheard of, a 1000-yard season was well-respected. The game changed in the 90's with 100- and 90-reception seasons becoming commonplace, and now in the 00's, the number of 100-reception and 90-reception seasons are on pace to be double the 90's figures.
I think when you evaluate players, you should judge them against the other players in their era, and of course winning against the competition. That's why guys like Otto Graham, Johnny Unitas, and Montana impress me so much.

Montana never wore gay hats and jackets with fur like Brady does - I'm waiting for that guy to start putting on makeup and carry around a man-purse

Very well put. I hate when this thing happens. Its called evolution. The NFL changes every 5-7 years. Trends,Schemes...players that you wouldn't think would play certain positions are now playing them.
Soon the FULLBACK will be making a comeback in another 2-3 years.

I dont see Patriots are enjoying the game, maybe its become so boring for them to win like this, that they are just laugh their heads off before they hit the field...
CBS Reporter: "So um what do you guys think you will do differently today?"
Brady: "You know ummm... Just win"
CBS Reporter: "What about winning home field advantage for the rest of the playoffs infront of your diehard fans"
Brady: "yeah.. great isn't it so what else is new!"
I mean their faces when they are not the first team to score first or are 7 points down or even 3. So miserable especially Brady, cheer-up still got 3 quarters to still play! Yes I know its called competiveness, but they really dont seem to look happy unless they are winning. Yes of course winning is what you play for but for the Patriots this season its become a 9-5 job, not something as if they enjoy doing. Or maybe they haven't yet met a team who really tested them like the Giants earlier in the season.
Boy if the Giants win the Super Bowl I think New England will call it a National Mourning day. Its only a game that you play because you enjoy playing!
And to be honest Patriots haven't been playing like an exciting team, except for the Giants game.
Boring Brady vs Magic Montana (no desrespect meant I still think Brady is a cool quarterback but not that exciting this season - maybe he's bored of winning)

Montana had more signature big game moments like the Catch and the Drive against the Bengals in Super Bowl 23
what will we remember Brady for?
The Tuck Rule and 2 Adam Vinaterri field goals.

I agree. In fact, I'm not a big fan of comparing anyone era over era. There's always some factors that people overlook/ignore. This whole "Who's better, the '72 Dolphins or '08 Patriots" is a perfect example of a pointless question.

We're all gonna be biased here since almost everyone on this forum loves the 49ers and of course loves the Golden Boy: Joe Montana. I'd take Joe over Tom, just for the simple reason that whenever I watch those super bowl classics, he never once looked upset over a throw he had (Cause he never had a bad one), he never hung his head, and he was always so calm and poised. Not to mention on paper hes amazing. but I like Brady he's my 3rd favorite QB
