I finally watched :yikes: the shrine game on my dvr and i saw this kid rubin just being a beast in the middle. No center could handle him one on one and he was even pushin the double team back. At 6'3 321 he has the size to be a 3-4 NT but showed good quickness off the ball also. He reminds me alot of casey hampton, someone who is not on mock drafts but wont make it out of the second round. the 9ers have to take this guy just on his build alone but we will see what he does at the combine..

I don't know how much a sleeper he is, he's in the top 5 for NT prospects for every expert and will most likely go in the top 3 rounds, especially since he played really well in the shrine game and in the senior bowl.
I agree he looks like a very good prospect, what I like most about him is he seems to have an unstoppable motor. He still has a bit of technique to work on, but yea I'd be happy with him as a selection in the 3rd round+.

If we got Rubin in the second round, I would be very happy with the pick.

Here's the question, there's a distinct possibility that Sims and Rubin could drop to the 9ers second round pick. If they are both available, which one would you take?
Sims may be a better choice

Sims is a DE, Rubin is a NT. It basically comes down to which position you think is more important. In fact, both guys are on my draft board for our first and second round picks, along with OT Chris Williams and some other guys. It will depend on who drops and who doesn't...

Sims in a NT. Built like one, plays like one, will be one in the NFL.
And why Williams? He pretty much proved he doesn't have the mean streak for RT.

Carl Nicks and Gosder Cherilus. I'd also rather have John Greco on the right side over Williams. Williams is a talented kid, but he's a finesse LT through and through.

Mike McGlynn seems to have a mean streak from what I hear...

Yes, but he projects to guard in the NFL...or at least he's a project to play RT.

The good thing is he can and has experience to play both. But. like most olinemen, it will still take 2-3 years to see PT unless he is a 1st day pick.. but he does have a mean streak...

i really like everything i have seen from cherilus and greco. with the possibility of being able to pick up greco in the third would be a nice move.

Rubin would be good in the 2nd, and a fantastic value in the 3rd. I'd love to get him if we don't get Sims.

I was looking at the Lindy's Football magazine for last year this year... and the Chargers don't have a single OL that was drafted in the 1st round (highest selection was OT Marcus McNeill), yet they have as talented of an offensive line as there is in the NFL.
Hardwick, Dielman, O'livea... all late rounders.
I'm actually amazed that when people talk about "1st round busts", it's only WR's and QB's; OL bust as often or even more than other positions.
I'm interested in seeing what rounds the leagues starting OL were drafted in, as well what rounds Pro-Bowl OL came from.
Being an OL is more about intelligence, toughness and technique than it is weight room strength and athletic ability, more-so than any other position; that's why I think so many great OL slip in the draft, and athletic wonders in the 1st round like Kwame Harris and Robert Gallery don't amount to much.
There are no sleepers in this league.

What does that have to do with my post?

Some people think Williams would make a good guard conversion in the NFL, and we have holes at LG and RT. If he could play either or both, so much the better.
As for a mean streak, what do you expect? He's from Vandy. Vandy's idea of a mean streak is splash their Perrier on someone.
And in case you're wondering from that comment, yes, I AM a Tennessee fan.

Hey maj, I remember you and some others saying that Red Bryant looked "soft" when you watched him play throughout the college season, but word was that he was dominating the OL during Senior Bowl practice... was it a fluke week, or do you think he might end being a decent player ?

I still haven't sat down to watch all the practices, and all of the game yet. I watched the first couple of North practices, and the first South practice, and most of the second half of the game, but I still need to sit down and really look at them.
Bryant may have been able to help his stock a little, but he still wouldn't have been able to prove stamina and endurance, which was a huge problem for him in college. Drills are short, and he wouldn't have played more than 50-60% of the game. Until I sit down and watch it all for myself, I can't comment too much on what he did last week.

He got into a slugging match with Chris Williams, and it was pretty one-sided (Bryant pummelled him). The coaches had to separate them, and Nolan himself took Bryant aside for a little chat. Judging by the bemused look on Nolan's face, I'd say the chances of the Niners drafting Bryant went way up after that incident.
Bryant definitely showed that he's a load to move off the line. It was nearly impossible for a single lineman to move him, and the double team didn't fair much better. However, when one of the lineman blocked down on Bryant, he was pretty easily moved. One of Bryant's better moves was when he slanted towards the play. However, it also left him vulnerable to misdirection. Now that I think about it, during most the Texas A&M games I watched, alot of linemen blocked down on Bryant and rode him out of the play. Perhaps college coaches have figured out his weakness.
I think Bryant has a chance to make it in the NFL, but he has alot of technique work to do, and he has to improve his stamina. I think his biggest challenge will be learning how to anchor against angle blocks. If he can do that, I think he has a chance to be a very good starting 3-4 nose tackle.

Ya, I'd figured you watched it by now; I'm just going off of reports I've seen, I have never watched him myself, either, and you make very good points about stamina/drills.
But.... stamina is not as much of a factor in the NFL as it is college:
NFL = Longer play clock = Fewer Snaps
Not saying that it would prove that he would be good at the NFL level, but the game is slightly different in the pro's than in college; that's why players that really didn't do much in college can excel at the NFL level, and leave people puzzled as to why they never showed that in college.
