View Full Version : 10 bold predictions for the offseason: "Cards will mishandle Fitzgerald"

Holy crap....I had no idea Fitz had this much money on the books:
6. Cardinals will mishandle Fitzgerald
Because of a rookie contract that included big-money escalators for the final two years of the deal, the Arizona Cardinals face a salary-cap mess in '08 and '09. The money owed to receiver Larry Fitzgerald is directly responsible.
It's a thorny problem for the Cardinals. They owe Fitzgerald $14.592 million this coming season and $17.355 million the next. A long-term extension is possible, but if the guaranteed money is less than $31.947 million (the sum of the salaries he is owed), the Cardinals shouldn't bother. Trading Fitzgerald is another possibility, but who'd want to pick up that contract?
This situation could go in several directions. The only safe bet, given the history of the franchise, is that the Cardinals will find a way to screw it up.

Whoa, 14.5 mill next season? He's making NBA money!
Hilarious. We'll see how it goes. I bet he ends up playing for the Falcons.

Seriously. And they're usually backloaded into the 6th and 7th years, not this early. Whoever handled his contract should be fired. And Fitzgerald should buy his agent a Mazarati or something.

There's too much smoke not to believe McNabb is available for the right price. That doesn't mean a trade definitely will happen, but it means a trade definitely could happen.
That's one hell of a bold prediction!

Haha, I was laughing at some of them being labeled "bold" too. Kinda like the Pats being a contender next year. Wow, now THAT is bold to suggest!

Holy cow! Did the Cards think he would be dead by now or something! Out of curiosity, what's the last two years of Nate Clements contract say? (He's a big dollar signing and I wonder what the comparison is.)

Ugly, but not as bad as Fitz:
2012 $11,500,000
2013 $11,270,000

Your right, ugly, but not as bad. I suspect by then that we'll have re-negotiated too or something. Thanks for the info Jackacid!

Good luck to Fitz on that, I don't see ANYONE shelling out that kind of dough for a receiver on a team that has never even broke .500 with him.

Yea there was one "more" year that is going to be voided by 8million in bonus next year or something. That one year was something like 20 million.

No, thats not nearly as bad as your 2-14 year where your only two wins came against Arizona. That was the junk kick of the new millennium as far as Arizona fans go.

Giants could open the season against the 49ers?

Nobody is going to guarantee him ~$31 million. And if they don't, he'd be a fool to do anything except play out the next two years of his contract just as they sit, then hit free agency in two years and cash in yet again. Dude is sittin' pretty.

More news from Don Banks, including Bryant info:
11. Which team has some heavy lifting to do cap-wise this month?
The Cardinals won't be a big player next month in free agency, largely because they've got so many more pressing issues on their roster at the moment. The most important task will be negotiating a restructured contract with Pro Bowl receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who is in line to be paid a whopping $16.5 million in '08, thanks to incentives he reached last year.
Arizona has to reduce that to a more cap-friendly number in order to address other matters, such as: Either signing linebacker Karlos Dansby to a long-term deal or franchising him at about $8 million this year; making a decision on whether running back Edgerrin James has to be released because he's too expensive with his $6.75 million cap charge for '08; and re-signing productive linebacker Calvin Pace before he's eligible for free agency on Feb. 29. Receiver Bryant Johnson, a '03 first-round pick, may have to be a cap casualty if the Cardinals can't free up enough resources with their other moves.

We also benefit from the salary cap increasing every year. In 2012 and 2013 the cap could be 40 million dollars more.
