I hope we resign Marques Douglas, and cut both Jonas Jennings, and Darrell Jackson. We give Lelie one more chance to earn his spot, or he also gets cut in june. Possibly replace lelie with Issac Bruce if he gets cut.

I'd cry if we drafted Desean Jackson, he's a poor man's Ted Ginn Jr.
Nah. Jackson goes across the middle, and is willing to take a hit and hang onto the ball. His game is much more refined than Ginn when he came out. Ginn had a Heisman winning QB to help him out, Jackson had Longshore :mouthclosed:

Jackson's fundamentals are about 5 times as good as Ginn's. Why Adams isnt he like 34 i'd rather go for Gross or Faneca

Why would we cut Jonas Jennings and Darrell Jackson when we could get draft picks for them? They still have trade value, even if it isn't very high.

He is also a MUCH better route runner than Ginn Jr., and the agility/change of direction isn't even comparable.
After the USC game, all Cal's PLAYERS could do was clown on Longshore and how terrible he is.

I can never understand the reasoning behind why people make these suggestions. If you think this is a good idea because of the salary cap implications then please say that.
The way I see it, however is that the 49ers are a team devoid of great talent and depth. So you suggest that the 49ers cut a starting receiver and tackle from last year in an effort to get better?
Wouldn't the team as a whole be better if we held onto Jennings and used him as the right tackle or even as a back-up?
Wouldn't the team as a whole be better if we held onto Jackson and used him as a 4th receiver (Martz does like to use a number of receivers) or even as a slot receiver?
I understand that it may be a high price to pay for both of these players, but until we have a talent overload at any one position, I just can't seem to justify to myself cutting guys that the coaching staff felt were good enough to start at the beginning of last season so we can play guys that couldn't beat them out of a spot.
This isn't a shot at you or your post, I have just seen a lot of people on this board suggesting we cut starters from the prior year whithout explaining why, and I was hoping someone could explain this to me and how it would make the team and our depth better.

That would be something to consider aswell, but I doubt anyone would part with anything more than a 6th or 7th rounder, especially knowing that we are close to parting ways with one, or both.

Sorry I couldn't specify more, I was in a hurry when creating this thread, and was basically putting down my thoughts in 5 mins..
I think this is a good reason because of their age, consistent injury patterns, and declining skills. For the salary range they are making, I would much rather part with these guys, and add someone new that we can try to improve with.
Also on Jackson, it doesn't matter how good Jackson's routes, and experience are , if he is always injured, and nearly dropping a pass for every one he catches.
The way I see it, however is that the 49ers are a team devoid of great talent and depth. So you suggest that the 49ers cut a starting receiver and tackle from last year in an effort to get better?
Yes. They have proven last year that they are not the answer.
-Jennings: has a consistent pattern of injuries over the last several years, when we needed him the most. I would much rather get a young guy with promise in there developing, instead of throwing out boatloads of money out for a injury prone, and overrated guy.
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY?
Oh, yeah....? Really......?? See, ya!
-Jackson: Was often hurt, and when he did play he often dropped passes that contributed to our problems on offense. He is clearly on the decline, and an upgrade is in order.
I'd much rather replace these two with Bernard Berrian, and/or Issac Bruce, and give Smith some options that can immediately step in, and contribute. Vetereans that COULD challenge Battle.
Wouldn't the team as a whole be better if we held onto Jennings and used him as the right tackle or even as a back-up?
Not for THAT price. And he would surely go down by midseason(as always), meaning we would likely be using a backup there anyways. Why not get one of the solid OT's in the draft middle rounds for the RT spot? There will be more than a few options to look at there, or in free agency.
Wouldn't the team as a whole be better if we held onto Jackson and used him as a 4th receiver (Martz does like to use a number of receivers) or even as a slot receiver?
Why overpay and do that, when the draft is overstocked at WR, with an overabundance of young speedy guys that could be lined up in the slot. We also could look at FA slot options like Patten, or Drew Carter, and possbily Bruce.
I understand that it may be a high price to pay for both of these players, but until we have a talent overload at any one position, I just can't seem to justify to myself cutting guys that the coaching staff felt were good enough to start at the beginning of last season so we can play guys that couldn't beat them out of a spot.

No offense taken, I like to listen to the opinions and or differences of others. But at the same time, I am respectfully disagrreeing in regards to D.Jackson, and J.Jennings.
It wouldn't be guys that weren't good enough to beat them out, it would be with FA upgrades, or talented rookie wr's.
Again, we have seen that these two guys are NOT the answer, and it would be better served taking a chance on someone new, that has as much, or more talent. Why spend another year, learning the same lesson??
We have surrounded him with the coaches, now let us give smith the players(both on the O-line and at WR)needed to utilize the Martz spread out attack.
This in turn will also benefit the defense.
This is just my opinion, and in no way the only solution, just what I think. We need to drop the injury prone deadweight, and add a guy like Berrian from the start of free agency-to build momentum(like with Clements), and attract other FA's.

let's not thread-jack and make this a DeSean Jackson thread even though I disagree with you guys too, but back on subject....
he won't be there in the first and no one should bother drafting Jacob Hester, will never be anything more than a poor man's Zak Keasey

Just mentioning the need to upgrade the WR postion play to help our Qb's, we need atleast 2 new additions/upgrades there IMHO.

And what makes you think this, especially given our team history of turning overlooked guys like Hearst, Beasley, and Gore into valuable players?
I remember reading a recent article where Mike Nolan couldn't help himself with complimenting him, he must see something there, that doesn't show up in the height, weight, combine numbers. He has hit on other players(like Willis), I am inclined to believe in his experience, and judgement.

2 of those players had nothing to do with the current staff and Gore was only past on because of his injury issues. Most teams knew he had the talent but didnt think he would be on the field enough.
Right, the coaching personnel has changed, and the 9ers were largely responsible for their development, but the general approach is in the same spirit. Although not quite on a Coach Rathman type of level :(
On the Gore subject, they didn't know he still had the talent, they knew what he had done in the past, but were redflagging him that draft as damaged goods due to the knee issues. Just like they saw something past the negatives in Gore, and I think they see the same potential in Hester.
Who knows what will happen, for all we know this could be a smokescreen tactic, taken right out of Walsh's playbook. However we solve the big RB need, I hope we pick the best one available. Hopefully that is Hester.

i agree but i have a feeling we will be drafting a wr in the first this time around due to martz and the poor offense.i would love to pick up a wr in FA so we could concentrate on OL and pass rush on the first day
