the rookie from Ohio State, according to KFFL Hotwire.

I recall the 9ers having some interest in Kudla 6-3 / 265 lbs. during draft.

I think I also recall this guy being one of the stronger players in the draft?

Wonder why Steelers gave up on him so early? Would 9ers go after Kudla for a look/see?

He'd probably be a 3-4 DE but would have to add weight. He has freakish strength for someone of his size but I don't really care for him as a football player.

How tall is he??? I remember him being short in the combine. Was he trying out for OLB or DE with the steelers? At 265 he is def. a tweener. I'd like to find out why they cut him. Does anyone know if he has been struggling with injuries, or the playbook?

Hmm.. what are the odds?

I heard they are signing Freddie Mitchell and converting him to SS, and releasing Troy Polamalu because he's a jerk.

I think he ended up measuring just over 6'2. Not sure though. I think he's fairly injury free.

Anybody see Kulda play in College? I think Steelers signed him as a free agent.

I saw several Ohio State games.. I just don't think his game translates to the NFL very well. If he were bigger or faster it could.

I have followed Mike Kudla's career since he was in high school, I know him personally. Mike Kudla was recruited by Tressel as a potential Linebacker, but what happened was that in his 3-4 def, he ended up with 1 extra LB.
Kudla had talent, was awesome on special teams, so Tressel used Kudla as a quasi Outside Linebacker/Defensive End.
All would agree, Kudla is not a Reggie White, in terms of body size.

I think he was labled as a Defensive End, and that made it difficult for many to see him in any other role.

I was not so surprised he did not get drafted.

I was surprised he got released from the Steelers.

I thought he would be able to carve out a new image, and role, either on Special Teams ( which he proved invaluble at OSU)
or find his way into an Outside LB position.

It is still a mystery as to way they released him before the pre-season.
I understand he had a major Hamstring Injury.

Thats my humble Opinion

Teams do their research Pigskin Pete, especially the Steelers. I think they knew he could play both LB/DE.

Steeler fan here - The Steelers were trying him out at ILB. Even though they often convert DE to OLBs in the 3-4, I think maybe they thought his speed was marginal for the outside position and might translate better inside.

In any case, he injured his hammy, and couldn't even get onto the practice field. He hadn't suited up for single practice since training camp started. With the Steelers set with their starting unit, with a top backup who can play inside and out (Harrison), and second year players showing a lot of promise - one inside and one outside, and one of their ILB backups as their ST captain, it didn't make a lot of sense to hold that roster spot for someone who couldn't even get onto the field to compete for a practice squad spot.
