View Full Version : Post Your First Round Mock Drafts Here (Game)
Escobar
04-20-2008, 11:10 AM
post your first 31 picks here, and we'll turn it into a little game to see you comes the closest to the actual draft
for scoring I was thinking:
10 points for every correct pick
5 points if a player ends up on the correct team but at a different pick (due to trade OR Dallas has 2 first round picks)- but, if a player ends up on the correct team in the 2nd round or later, no points are awarded
5 points if a player get picked at the right pick but by a different team (due to trade)
If someone has a better way to score it, I open for ideas
- everyone can play
- I guess you could put in trades if you feel really confident about it (or have - some inside information :spy: )
- Picks have to be in before 3 PM ET (Noon Pacific) on Saturday April 26th

01 - Miami - Jake Long, T, Mich
Freebie.
02 - St Louis - Chris Long, DE, UVA
According to Shefter, this pick is already in as well, and the draft won't really start until ATL makes the decision between Dorsey and Ryan.
03 - Atlanta - Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
It'll be interesting to see who won on this decision between the owner and the football people. Mike Smith wants to win game by playing defense and running the ball. Arthur Blank wants to put the Vick fiasco behind them. In the end, I think they go BPA (of the entire draft IMO) and take the guy more likely to make the Pro Bowl, and ensure NO doesn't move up to get him.
04 - New Orleans (from OAK) - Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC
If NO can't get up to #2 for Dorsey, then this is their next opportunity to get a playmaking DT. ATL isn't going to deal #3 to their division rival, and OAK needs to acquire more picks. I'm sure NO would much rather get the hometown kid Dorsey, but getting Ellis is a great consolation prize.
Trade: OAK sends 4 to NO for 10 + 78 + '09 Rd2
05 - Baltimore (from KC) - Matt Ryan, QB, BC
Perhaps worried that ATL has no choice but to take Ryan after seeing both DTs come off the board, BAL makes their move to secure a franchise QB. This works for KC as well, since pick 8 will cost less, as they now have two #1s to sign after the Allen trade.
Trade: KC sends 5 to BAL for 8 + '09 Rd2
06 - Dallas (from NYJ) - Darren McFadden, RB, Ark
If DMC makes it out of the top 5, better believe Jerry will make this move. By obtaining Pac-Man, they can wait until round 2 to address CB, and use their 3rd pick on the muddled WR class. By getting DMC here, they give MB3 his lightning back, and add an explosive returner in the process.
Trade: NYJ sends 6 + 113 to DAL for 22 + 28.
07 - New England - Vernon Gholston, LB, OSU
NE was probably thinking of moving out of this pick, until Gholston fell into their lap. He may have motivation/work ethic issues coming into the league, but going to NE is a good way to fix that. Bilichick will be on his arse to perform there, and he'll be a great pass rush threat for them after their old guys retire.
08 - Kansas City (from BAL) - Branden Albert, OL, UVA
With so many holes on that OL, they'll be sure to find a home for this gifted talent. ALbert has great feet, is an outstanding run blocker, and KC saves some money by moving down a few spots before pulling the trigger on him.
09 - Cincinnati - Rashard Mendenhall, RB, CIN
I go back and forth trying to decide between Mendy and Otah here. Ultimately, I think Mendy grades out higher, and provides a more immediate impact. The dark horse for this spot would be Harvey.
10 - Oakland (from NO) - Derrick Harvey, DE, UF
There is a solid group of pass rushers available early on in this draft, so OAK would be wise to move down, acquire an extra pick or two, and grab one here. If they don't take Harvey here, I wouldn't be at all surprised to here Groves' name called here.
11 - Philadelphia (from BUF) - Ryan Clady, T, BSU
Perhaps a bit concerned Clady is about to go to DEN at the next selection, PHI finally cashes in it's Lito card and moves up for a future LT to take over for Thomas next year. It's clear Winston Justice isn't that guy, and Clady has all the tools to get it done, especially with a year to adjust to the NFL game.
Trade: BUF sends 11 + 147 to PHI for 19 + Lito Sheppard
12 - Denver - Jonathan Stewart, RB, Ore
Travis Henry can't be counted on, and he will hit the dreaded 30 this season. Shanny doesn't think Young is an every down back either. So, after seeing what may have been their target get snatched away from them a pick early, Shannahan decides to draft a RB a lot earlier than usual, and takes J-Stew, a fast and punishing RB who can catch and block as well.
13 - Carolina - Chris Williams, T, Vandy
CAR likes run blocking specialists, but when a pure LT presents itself for you, you can't pass it up. Williams will learn better technique in the run game playing in CAR, he already has the pass pro down pretty well.
14 - Chicago - Jeff Otah, T, Pitt
Perhaps crossing their fingers hoping Otah doesn't go to CAR, CHI gets the tackle that may be the better fit for them here. Tait has the left side locked down for a couple more years, but they have no one at RT heading into camp. Otah provides the run blocking RT they need, and could possibly develop into a LT for them.
15 - Detroit - Jerod Mayo, LB, Tenn
The most recent of the fast risers is Jerod Mayo, and it seems that DET is behind his stock boom. They've shown quite a bit of interest in him, and have probably already given away this pick. Lucky for them, I don't think anyone else will move ahead of them to take him away.
16 - Arizona - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, TSU
ARI is extremely thin at CB heading into draft weekend, and a guy with DRC's physical attributes, and playmaking abilities will be coveted by them here. If he's gone, then they may look at McKelvin, Cason or Jenkins to fill their void here.
17 - Kansas City - Quentin Groves, DE, AU
After filling a huge need on OL, KC turns their attention to replacing Jared Allen with this pick. Groves is a superior pass rush specialist, and would be a nice bookend with Hali in KC for years to come.
18 - Houston - Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy
Perhaps hoping for a LT to fall to them here, or even for someone to call an offer them more picks to move down (which may be unlikely with what's on the board right now), HOU decides to take a CB that can contribute right away in case Robinson isn't ready to go when the season starts. He carries with him that added return value, which will help them on punt returns.
19 - Buffalo - Devin Thomas, WR, MSU
After Kelly left a sour taste in everyone's mouth last week, BUF seems to have turned their attention to Thomas, the one year wonder from the Big 10 (scary). What he offers them is a WR who is from a run based offense in college, who is used to running those short routes, which will help free up Evans on his deep routes. And, since CB was taken care of when they obtained Sheppard, this pick takes on less of a risk for them.
20 - Tampa Bay - Mike Jenkins, CB, USF
Another of those guys that shows tremendous talent on the field, but gets questioned about his work ethics and selective physicality. He won't have the option to loligag it in Kiffin's defense, and could actually end up being quite a steal this late for TB.
21 - Washington - Phillip Merling, DE, Clem
Washington may not know what to do with a 1st round pick, and decide the pressure is too much, then trade down. However, this may be the year that Snyder and the powers that be actually hold their water and make a selection in round 1. They seem to be very high on Merling, and he's the last of the elite pass rushers in this draft. Coming off injury may have dropped him a bit, but he'll produce about as well as the guys taken ahead of him.
22 - New York Jets (from DAL) - Chad Henne, QB, Mich
NYJ don't have a QB on their roster that is going to lead them deep into the playoffs anytime soon. Henne has been a four year starter at a major program, shown the toughness on the field to handle the NFL rigors, and has a solid record as a starter.
23 - Pittsburgh - Keith Rivers, LB, USC
Simple value. Rivers is probably the BPA on the board here, and PIT could use some depth at ILB. They could look across town at Dan Connor here as well. He seems to fit the Steeler persona a little better.
24 - Tennessee - Limas Sweed, WR Tex
What better way to get production from your passing game than to reunite college teammates? Sweed is coming off an injury marred season, but seems to have alleviated some concerns with scouts leading up to the draft.
25 - Seattle - Dan Connor, LB, PSU
SEA doesn't have much depth at LB, and Leroy Hill is going into his final year of his contract. Connor will either make him earn his extension, or make him expendable. If PIT takes Connor off the board before this, look for SEA to grab another USC LB here.
26 - Jacksonville - Kentwan Balmer, DT, UNC
While Rob Meier is solid in rotation, he's not an every down player. Balmer adds to the depth at DT in JAX, and could even kick out to LDE if he's asked to slim down some. JAX seems to like a bigger guy at that spot.
27 - Atlanta (from SD) - Brian Brohm, QB, UL
With the extra ammo up their sleeve, ATL can be ready to pounce on a QB at any time. Patience pays off for them here, as SD is likely more interested in recouping some picks, and allows ATL to take a QB at a little better price than they would had they taken Ryan at 3.
Trade: SD sends 27 to ATL for 34 + 68.
28 - New York Jets (from DAL) - Antoine Cason, CB, Arz
Perhaps the most talented CB in this class, he seems to be falling down in mocks because he doesn't show well as a track star. Cason could easily become the best CB of this class for the next several years.
29 - San Francisco - Gosder Cherilus, RT, BC
With Jennings track record, and Baas' injury in mind, we'd be extremely lucky to see the last of the 1st round tackles fall to us. Cross your fingers.
30 - Green Bay - Aqib Talib, CB, KU
It's either Talib or Flowers here, for me. Talib is the better candidate to move back to safety, if needed, or stay put and learn the ropes at CB from a couple of savvy vets.
31 - New York Giants - Kenny Phillips, S, Mia
Kind of a younger version of Gibril Wilson, Phillips is a physical safety that is strong against the run, and has enough range to stay at FS in the NFL. It is also said Reese covets him, and would be happy to see him fall to their pick.

majesstik1

I dunno about either of those statements. I think some team could take a risk on King, he was ranked as the number 1 CB for his class pre-season by many draft sites. And I still think Kelly could go in the first, and Buffalo is definitely a possibility since they're known for reaching for players, and Kelly would fit perfectly there.
They will be able to get Kelly at 41, more than likely, and could plug a hole at CB with a guy rated much higher than Malcolm in round 1.

yeah I just keep hearing how bills don't value any WR at #11... it'd be a pretty good draft geting a CB, Kelly, then a TE for the Bills

post your first 31 picks here, and we'll turn it into a little game to see you comes the closest to the actual draft
for scoring I was thinking:
10 points for every correct pick
5 points if a player ends up on the correct team but at a different pick (due to trade OR Dallas has 2 first round picks)- but, if a player ends up on the correct team in the 2nd round or later, no points are awarded
5 points if a player get picked at the right pick but by a different team (due to trade)
If someone has a better way to score it, I open for ideas
- everyone can play
- I guess you could put in trades if you feel really confident about it (or have - some inside information :spy: )

I don't think so. I think he said the final picks have to be in before 3 pm EST, which is 12 pst on Saturday. It doesn't make sense to be able to have a mock draft game after the real draft has already been done

Trades are actually the best way to mess up. I know this every year, yet I still try to predict them.
Think about it, there are usually about 5 trades in Round 1 every year. That only accounts for 15% of the picks. It's better odds to do mocks without them, but they're just so tempting
