I'm tired of people saying we drafted a backup, that is BULL ****.
They are going to put Balmer in NT and he is athletic enough to play LE as well.
He will be fighting for NT and will probaly beat out Aubrayo who sucks a lot.
Everywhere I read it says he can play NT or LE. Our d-line has sucked for years, now it is loaded with Sopoaga at LE Smith at RE and now Balmer at NT.
If we could get a fast OLB for the 3-4 it would make my day.
I would also like to see us get a RT like Anthony Collins or Carl Nicks.
Nicks is better overall and comapares to Flozell Adams, he was originally going to be a 1st rounder mid to late), but he fell when he got arrested for the dumbest thing (he couldn't leave a party that was to noisy and the police arrested him for not leaving the house, he said he couldn't drive cuz he was drunk). And it ruined his stock big time. It would be a steal for us to get the 22 year old 341 pound 6'5" OT. He is unmovable and has quick feet for his size, he would be amazing next to Rachal for our o-line. He had a great senior bowl and dominated everyone. He is hard to move due to his huge frame. Alex Smith having time in a ... Pocket!!! I just can't see it happening.
Remember now we didn't get sexy picks, but we improved our trenches which are very important and were a weak point last season. So we have actually done the right thing

I've alway been a strong backer that we needed to seriously upgrade the DL... with Sopo at UT... Balmer wheter starting or rotating at UT and starting or rotating at NT.... and Smith now at RDE I'm sold that we have a very good 3 with real good depth with McDonald, Oliver and company...
Chilo can start at OG and bounce to RT for now if needed... truth is... this year we were likely looking for depth and not an instant starter though we may have found that....
like you said man... there is still more RT and OG talent available...
we're bound for an up and up season... we'll get more valuable wins this year and will compete every game... we need some LB depth now and can get more help in the secondary...
we had talent last year... but coaching and health issues crushed us... Balmer is an awesome pickup...
I will be ordering my jersey before the season starts

man... even Balmer at NT... he can take up 2 Blockers... with Sop at UT taking another 2... it's perfect for Smith to get single and try to apply some pressure...
and I love the idea of Avril or Connor this round... a starting safety even

You're right. He is definitely NOT a backup, and I am excited to watch this young man take a prominent role in freeing up our linebackers to get at QBs.
From the Sac Bee (http://www.sacbee.com/100/story/893245.html)...
"But as blockers were being snapped up, 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan saw another phenomenon taking place. With every guard or tackle taken, one of the 49ers' favorite prospects, defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer, trickled toward San Francisco at pick No. 29.
The 49ers entered the draft ready to trade down to accumulate more picks. As Balmer, a big defensive tackle from North Carolina, fell tantalizingly closer to them, however, the 49ers strongly considered trading up."

i don't care that some places say he can play NT, i don't see any way possible that he starts at NT this year. he is too small for the positionand too tall for the position given his weight (308 lbs.). he will backup at both DE spots in my opinion, and i really don't see how people think he can play NT unless he gains at least 30 lbs. which def. won't happen this offseason. he will also play DT when we go to a 4 man line.
