I think management did ok with the draft picks, addressing our needs which was really DL and OL. but I think they could've been more creative and picked up extra picks, and still addressed our needs and come out with a better overall draft.
Perhaps if we did some due diligence and called around to shop our early second round pick (37th overall) for a late second and maybe a late third, we could of have picked up Phillip Meirling in the first instead of Balmer and still get a quality DT with a our additional late third rounder (via the trade) and select Marcus Harrison. And by moving down to late 2nd, i think Chilo Rachal would've still been available. By doing this your getting a pass rusher with Philip Meirling and picking up an extra pick for a good DT in Marcus, with upside.
Obviously this is all speculation but I would have liked to somehow package our early 2nd round pick and pick up additional picks. If not for the scenario i mentioned above, use the additional pick for position other than DT, maybe a decent reciever. But I think, Chilo Rachal would have been available later in the second round and maybe even early third.
This is the type of draft day maneuvering Bill Walsh used to excel at and the Patriots also do very well.
