I don't know about that. They could run a lot of double TE sets. They could also split Shockey out at WR and still use Johnson and TE.

Well, they did win a SB without him.

How is that a big blow? They won the SB without him. He was more of a distraction to Eli than anything else.

they won the SB without Kiwi too, so i guess he wasn't important.
No DC is ever going to say, "man, Boss scares us, we have to gameplan around him." Boss isn't as good of a blocker than Shockey, so that effects the running game as well. And the 2 TE sets they could have had, was going to be really effective. Not so much anymore.

Shockey had 2 good seasons. I think this is a great trade for the Giants, they beat some of the toughest teams in the league on the road without him. Getting a 2nd and a 5th for him is a great deal for New York.

Kevin Boss showed up when replacing Shockey. Besides, who revolves a defensive gameplan around Shockey when you could just stick a OLB on him? But then again, the NFC South's OLB and DE aren't prepared for a fast TE.

Yeah that is all true but as I said before Shockey seemed to be more of a distracton to Eli because he was always asking for the ball and Eli tried to force the ball to him when others were open.

I think he can. He just needs to stay healthy. Shockey in my mind is a little overrated, EJ is very solid when healthy.
Both teams got a great deal. I can see it working out for both sides.

Shockey, while somewhat overrated as a whole, is a very good blocker, and one his best blocking abilities in New York was sealing off the outside very well for runs that bounce it outside, and I think having a TE that excels at that will help out Bush a lot since that's also where he's better running the ball.
I think he'll be a great fit in New Orleans, with their passing offense and with how he blocks in the run game.

07-21-2008, 01:10 PM
Good trade for the GMEN. Shockey is a solid TE, but the GMEN proved he was irrelevant when they made their SB run in the playoffs. Boss stepped up and proved he deserved a shot a starting this coming year. I don't really know if there are enough balls to go around in NO now... but then again Brees can just throw the ball 600+ times again

Good move for both sides. Sean Peyton loves to have weapons all over the place and they'll certainly use him in the passing game which was his complaint in NY.
This move also helps Eli. He forced a ton of throws to Shockey over the years just to keep him happy and prevent him from running his loud mouth. Its no coincide at all that Eli improved when Shockey went out.
Max_Power
07-21-2008, 02:21 PM
I love the deal...Boss is solid and Eli will feel less pressure to feed the big mouth the ball. This combined with last years run should instill a lasting calm in Eli that will hopefully help him keep his confidence. A confident Eli is a dangerous one.
You said it right there. For years, I thought he was just living off of his last name and would always be nothing more than hype. He often looked lost and uncomfortable, but I'll be ****ed if the expressions on his face in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl didn't tell me all I need to know...and that is he is the real deal.
With all of the crap I have spit about him, it really pains me to admit that.
Montana_Magic
07-21-2008, 02:28 PM
If a Super Bowl MVP doesn't have the balls to tell a player to shut up, then there is something wrong with him. That was my thinking going into this season with Shockey still on the team. Obviously though, Shockey and the FO couldn't get along and the trade had to be made.
And the Giants doing good once Shockey being injured could be because a change in the gameplan, Toomer playing well above what he was doing the rest of the year, the emergence of Bradshaw, and Steve Smith coming back.
SB49er4life
07-21-2008, 02:45 PM
Eli is kind of sensitive, to say the least. I think someone like Shockey dogging him every day of the season wears on him quicker than it would other QBs. Yeah, Boss isn't nearly as talented as Shockey but that talent doesn't always translate to success. Chemistry is just as important. Hell, ask the Bengals.
Eli is talented, but you're right... he's just not that fiery leader that is gonna be DEMANDING respect from hot-heads.
The deal is good for both teams; it obviously improved the Giants' offensive chemistry, and I think Shockey fits well in NO because Drew Brees' is a fiery leader who won't tolerate crap about a skill player telling him where to go with the ball. That, and Brees will find Shockey when he's open and keep him happy.

Congratualtions Shockey!!!
Let's review:
You get injured, your team does better without you, wins the Super Bowl, and then just to make sure you don't come back, they trade you.
Yeah, I guess you really are as good of a player as you say you are!!!
But seriously, good trade by both teams. I just don't understand why the G-Men didn't do this before April, so they could have drafted someone right away.

We won't put up 56 on the Pats, or anyone for that matter... but I don't think it's totally outta the question for us to upset the Pats.
Their D is greatly over-rated... their offense being able to put opponents in huge deficits early on last year made their D not have to worry about getting ran on a great deal.
That being said... we most likely lose to them.

Wait, everyone's talking about how Shockey is a great blocker ... I thought that he stopped blocking as well as he could because he felt like he wasn't getting the receptions he wanted, so when Boss came in they actually did better since Boss was willing to block. Did anyone else hear this?

Yeah I don't think we can defeat New England. It would be the upset of the century, but they are still fully loaded and we are still building. I just hope we beat the Saints. Depending on how the season starts, 49ers/Saints could be the Week 4 "Game of the Week".

Eh, going to a good USC game could be a lot more fun than going to many NFL games. I enjoy going to both college and NFL games, but the atmosphere is definitely different and I think more energetic at the college level, and I normally actually prefer watching NFL games to college games on TV.

Would you still agree with that statement if I told you the 1 USC game I went to was the loss to Stanford at home last year (I'm an SC fan).
But whoa... I'm TOTALLY with you on your last statement; unless I have GREAT seats, mid-level, sideview, I would definitely rather watch a football game on TV. I'm not gonna lie; I have no idea what is going on from the end zone view.
I feel ya on the college experience thing, too; at USC, and I'm sure at most big schools, they hold these enormous tail gates on campus, so there are tons of free drinks and hot chicks around your age to be around.

I have an older cousin who graduated from Auburn about a few years ago, I always wanted to go to a game there but never got the chance unfortunately. I've been to a game at Lane at Virginia Tech- that was absolutely nuts. My roommates went up to Death Valley at Clemson this past fall for the season opener against FSU and said opening kickoff was the loudest thing they had ever experienced.
I plan on going to Georgia Tech and possibly Maryland for away games this year.

Great. I was actually sort of rooting for USC last year to go to the National Title game, and that Stanford game screwed it all up. Maybe it's better you just watch them on TV, or actually, buy season tickets to teams you hate.
Yeah, I sit in the corner end zone usually at Doak for our games, and it gets hard to see some stuff, especially when it's on the far side of the field. Of course, sometimes it's just hard to see because I've gone too crazy at the tail gates. I remember when Clemson game down here to Tally last time in 2006, and I actually got caught cheering for Clemson several times because I literally couldn't tell the difference between us or them on the field I was so out of it. I've since scaled myself back a bit.

Sorry for the necrobump but I didn't feel like creating a thread.
I wasn't aware of this before, but apparently the 2nd round pick that the Giants got in this trade will most likely turn into a 1st round pick.

It's mentioned near the end of the article. Basically because of the playing time Vilma is getting, the Jets will get that 2nd round pick and the Saints will be forced to hand over a 1st to the Giants in addition to the other pick they received. This looks like the deal of the century for the Giants, especially if the Saints finish like 7-9. A mid 1st round pick for a TE who can't stay healthy and when he is, hasn't been effective (0 TDs, not even 500 yards) at all in one of the best offenses in the league.
That's why they're the Saints and Jerry Reese has quickly become a top 5 GM in all of football.
