View Full Version : Marques Douglas might get cut... would you resign him?

If Marques Douglas gets cut from the Bucs (which believe it or not is a possibility as he has vastly underimpressed in training camp and preseason) do you think we would make a move to resign him?

I'd definitely welcome him back. He had a great year last season and he really loves the bay area.

He'd probably come back a lot cheaper too, especially if he gets cut.

The Bucs have a lot of competition on the DL, and Jimmy Wilkerson has been a beast this training camp, essentially putting the squeeze on ol' Marques.

Right now he is listed as 3rd string at RDE. Truth is, he's behind all of those guys, as well as the DTs. They're not going to cut a young high draft pick like Dre Moore, and Ryan Sims has played well too. It's going to come down to him and Greg Peterson, and I think Douglas is on the short end of that stick.

I know for a fact he'd love to come back to San Francisco.

Wouldn't mind him if true...

My question is WHY,WHY,WHY!!!!...if we let him go and he is NOT doing well in Tampa, what good would it do to get him back???...whose place would he take???...

I'd take him back, he wouldn't start though...he'd basically taking over Walter Curry's presumptive place on the roster.

I think he'll make the Bucs' roster though.

Seeing as we drafted Balmer, and things are looking okay with our defense line at the moment I see no reason to inquire about resigning him. Especially if he's not doing well with Tampa Bay.

If he's not good enough for Tampa, why the heck would you want here??

WOW, I can't believe people are so love with losing seasons, they continuously want to bring back the same old players.

It wouldn't hurt to have him in our defensive line rotation. He's excellent against the run. Are you saying that every single guy we're going to have on the D-Line is a better alternative to him?

Well, honestly, no.

We're very thing at NT, but Douglas doesn't play NT, so that doesn't matter.

It's all about depth. I still think Sopoaga gets moved back to NT if anything happens to Franklin. It'd be nice to have some more depth behind RayMac, Justin Smith, and Sopoaga at DE.

No kidding. No one said anything about him starting.

Yep. That's all I'm saying. Plus, if he gets cut, he'd be coming back a lot cheaper than what he was asking before we let him go.

Don't be surprised if this happens.

If he's not good enough for Tampa, why the heck would you want here??

Possible reasons:

1) Because they have better player than we do at the position.

2) Because he doesn't their needs as much as he does ours.

That said, I don't think we should get him if he does get cut. We've moved on. Also, he was a very popular player in the locker room so he may cause a divide if he were to be brought back.

So who are you cutting to make room for him?

I'd definitely support it. We really need the depth. Let him fight for a position, and who cares if he doesn't win, cuz' we need the backup.

Because he doesn't fit in their defensive scheme (RDE in the tampa 2? lol), but he does fit in ours?

DUNCAN51NICK

We're keeping at least 6 for sure.

Douglas would make 7... right now we're looking at:
Justin Smith, Aubrayo Franklin, Isaac Sopoaga, Ray McDonald, Kentwan Balmer, and Ronald Fields... and maybe even Walter Curry, as someone else mentioned Douglas would be replacing Curry's possible roster spot.

I wasn't counting Smith as a lineman. If it came down to Curry making the team or getting Douglas, I say get Douglas.

no way...he needs a 4-3...

why not?
Because he's more than likely going to be a tweener. He'll be playing DL and OLB.

I have a personal philosophy and that is never move backward... He is in the past when it comes to the 49ers, and that's just where he should say, if only because of that never move backward idealism I have.

I'd say no. I liked what he did for us last year, but we've made other plans and I want to see how those guys play, and I also dont want him clogging the roster as a backup.

If he gets cut, and we have injuries or RDE performance issues a few games in, then give him a call.

I don't see how that would benefit the Giants. They already have Renaldo Wynn.

That something might happen isn't really an assertion that requires the other person to have any degree of trust.

I'd like to have him back. He's better than Curry, and we need a veteran presence on the DL.

However, BAL just put two of their DTs on IR, and I wouldn't be surprised if they landed him...if TB does in fact cut him.

Pound th' Rock

Baltimore could be an option. I know for a fact that he loved San Francisco and the people here. He misses the people and the city more than anything.

no, it would mean less PT for Ray Mac. i like Ray;s progression thusfar and looking forward to a full season of him rushing the passer.

and i wish someone could find that thread a while back where people were defending he is a perfect Tampa 2 type DE.

Based on RayMac's preseason performance thus far, I don't see Marques Douglas "stealing snaps" from him.

Pound th' Rock

well they basically play the same position/fill the same need. something would have to give.

Not really. That's what depth is all about. It wouldn't hurt to have M Douglas waiting on the bench if/when we need him.

Fair enough. I do love a bit of technicality, it's as English as drinking tea.

I wouldn't mind seeing Douglas back here at all. Would McNolan be able to go back on the decision not to resign him? That's the question. Even so, it would still be massive for a team to bring in a FA who was a starter for three seasons at another team and then cut him the same pre-season. It either says our quality and depth is absolutely abysmal or the Bucs are just far too talented along the D line for their own good.

How much would we have to pay for him, he'd be a 7th DLineman...

One year contract for RDE depth, maybe. If our DE situation doesn't quite live up to par this year, maybe we go after Olshansky in the offseason...
