Tonight, a tall, thin, young Black man walked into Giovanni’s Pizzeria where our Booster Club was gathered for the first dinner of the year.
As he drew near to my table (I was seated on the end near the
aisle), he greeted me. I dumbly said, "Do I know you?" to which he replied, "You're Niner Jan, aren't you?"

It was one of our 49ers, Spencer, our starting CB. He recognized me, which pleased me very much. I told him we missed seeing him in the preseason games, and he reassured me that he will be back for the first regular game, which was GOOD NEWS!

I never realized how THIN he is. Hope there's enough meat on his bones to insulate him from further physical damage.

Niner Mom :go9ers:

Nice to be recognized by our 49ers.

That's really cool but how does he know you? And I just looked on NFL.com and saw that Spencer's only 179 pounds.

Well, remember that I went to 9 of the practices during Training Camp. Also, I write to the 49ers every Christmas (including a picture of myself with a 49er or the Lombardi's or Sourdough Sam), so that they DO recognize me. I make it my business to talk to them when I see them--any time. So, that's how the recognition grows.

Thursday will be another one of my lucky, happy days. I'm going to the Chamber of Commerce Kickoff Luncheon, where all the players on the team are introduced to the diner FANS--on an individual bases. They are spread around among the diners, one at each table.

What I do is go from table to table to meet all the Niners I don't know and say hello to the veterans I recognize. I consider them all my SONS (hence, my name of Niner Mom) and I love them all individually.

I believe in them as persons suited up for the game on game day. My job is to get to know them personally, and I do my job diligently. That's why some of them recognize me...even Jerry Rice after 5 years away from being a 49er recognized me when he saw me out front of the Facility.

Yes, Fabie, I practically DO live at 4949 Centennial Blvd (although that is such a misnomer--it's NOT a big street, almost like a cul de sac. But that's neither here not there...

Niner Mom

I just wanted to inject a bit of good news at a time when we need some more positive thinking blinking back at us!

You know all of the player's addresses?

Cool story, Jan! Have you updated your picture shirt and sweater? The last time I saw you was at the Ken Dorsey autograph party at The Fan Club.

I miss the Bay Area sometimes. The last player I saw in person out in public (outside of a game or TC) was TO at The Great Mall in Milpitas.

You know all of the player's addresses?

Yes, their addresses are simple to remember:

San Francisco 49ers
4949 Centennial Blvd.
Santa Clara, CA 95054-1229

I write to them all at Christmas, individually. I deliver the cards in person and hand them over to the security guard, who puts them in their lockers.

Please see my other thread on the Gold Mine entitled, "Would you like to meet a 49er? Really!" It's an equal opportunity for anyone living in the area. (Sorry about that, you out-of-towners and East Coasters.)

FREEagent,

Come to our Booster Club, so you can meet him in person YOURSELF! A vicarious experience is worthless, IMO. I'm sure he will be one of the 4 guests we will be having.

My wish list is for Vernon, Manny, Robinson, and Walker! Did I make good choices?

Niner Mom :yahoo:

To answer your question, I meet the 49ers at various events that I attend. Today is one of them--going to SF to the Kickoff Luncheon. The WHOLE TEAM will be there, presented to the fans dining there ONE by ONE by Joe Starkey. Ever hear of Joe? He's the "Voice of the Niners" who has been calliing the plays for the 49er games for many years; used to be on KGO, now on KNBR. Joe is almost as famous as a Niner! He's a great spirited guy....a tall drink of water...
