View Full Version : How would you like to meet a 49er? REALLY!

Niner Jan

I would like to extend to you as Niner Fans in the Bay Area the wonderful opportunity to meet 49er players in person. Yes, you read that right!

• How would you like to have dinner with one of the guys, and ask him all the questions your heart desires and curiosity dictates?

• What if you could get all the autographs you wanted and take as many close up candids of him that you desired? Even be in the same picture with the player?

This can be YOUR WISH COME TRUE. Come join other active 49er Fans in our 49er Santa Clara Booster Club and spend TWO HOURS with a 49er once a month over the next 5 months!

Remember how hard some of you worked to get just ONE autograph after one of the recent Training Camp practices that you attended? Imagine being able to sit and relax in the company of a 49er player with no one hassling you. Imagine being able to snap your own photos of our players at your convenience--as many as you wanted. Wouldn't you love to ask questions of one of those players about football, the 49ers, or about HIM?

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN MAKE THIS ALL COME TRUE!

The 49ers Booster Club of Santa Clara meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from September to January at 7 pm in Santa Clara at a restaurant on Lawrence Expressway--between Hwy 101 and Hwy 237 (closer to 101). We have a buffet dinner (self-serve). The club is an intimately sized group of 40-50 people who are very friendly and ardent 49er fans, like yourselves. You will feel at home with the others, I promise you.

If you are interested in this kind of great opportunity to hobnob with our 49er players, send me a PM for further details.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 12th. Social hour is from 6-7 pm, with dinner promptly at 7 pm. Our 49er guest will tell us all about himself and answer your questions after eating. I know you will find no EQUAL opportunity in your life to this thrilling experience!

It seems that I always join, but I'm never able to make it out for the Dinner meetings!

We'll see....maybe.

There are several MB fans who are members of the Booster Club. They can attest to the fun that they have once a month.

Once you come, you'll KNOW for sure what a great time you have! It's always the FIRST time that's the hardest nut to crack, you know.

I'm a member of the Concord Goad Rushers Booster Club. I've haven't made it out to any dinners yet either, but hopefully this year I will  I joined mostly because of the charter bus service they provide to the home games. It's fun to meet other fans and swap memories and stories about the 9ers, and to hear the various theories and strategies on what the team should do :rolleyes2:

Seeing as I live on the wrong side of the country for this, I can't join. But I am coming in for the Nov 19 game and this would be a great way to make this an even better trip. Anyway you could make something like this happen????

Sorry, the November game is a few days after the November Booster Club meeting--which is always on the second Tuesday of the month, the 49er players' day OFF.

Glad you are coming in for the special Jerry Rice half-time ceremony, though.

I too am a member of the Santa Clara Gold Rushers! The dinner events are great, but this year we were treated to an extra special experience. The team reserved a Training Camp day for Booster club members ONLY. If any of you attended camp along with four or five thousand other fans, and left with black and blue elbows after pushing your way to the autograph fence, imagine what it would be like to be there with only 60 or 70 special guests!
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y2/NinerTest/trainingcamp.jpg
We were also treated to a talk by VP of Player personnel, Scot McCloughan. It was held in a room not often seen by the general public. He gave us some great insights into the draft process as well as allowed us to give him an ovation for his efforts during the past two drafts. To top it off, the Niners then led us across the practice field to a private dinner under the white tents in the end zone. The food was fine, but being in the company of Booster club members from all over Northern California was a special treat. You can't sign up for events like those through the Mercury News!

Our club president was actively involved in getting booster club members invited to training camp even before they started opening the doors to the general public. If I'm counting correctly, we've been invited to attend camp each of the past three years. We do feel we receive special attention from the team.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y2/NinerTest/49er-hq.jpg

But that is only one of the benefits of being a Booster club member. I feel the biggest benefit of membership is the regular opportunity to meet and speak with one of the players. Jan does not exaggerate about the two hour dinners during which we can converse, take photos, obtain autographs and really get to know a member of the team. We spent time with Alex last year and a host of others, including fan favorite PJ Fleck - twice!
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y2/NinerTest/signing.jpg
It's a ton of fun and well worth anyone's time, and a bargain for the price! If you live in the South Bay, I highly recommend you come on down and join the club. You won't regret it!

must think about this one hard! thanks for the infoIt's not hard at all. All you gotta do is send a PM to NinerJan. When she fills you in, you're gonna jump at it. Trust me.

IMHO, if you've got enough interest to spend time on this board - you are exactly the kind of person who belongs in the club. We have just as much fun there, both before and after dinner, debating opinions about the team. And there are some hardcore fans there - they can tell some first hand stories about Joe, Jerry, Eddie and Steve which you won't believe!

Imagine doing what you do here, face to face with real people! Soo much cooler than on a video monitor!

DUOH! But then I see your profile which says you're from Star City - that ain't in the South San Francisco Bay area. I'm not too sure where it is - but it certainly ain't from around here. Nevermind....

Thanks, Fred, for the heads up! That was a great write-up and a terrific pic of one of my faves, BY! Good snapshot of your wife, too, talking to one of our great Niners. I loved the photo of the front of the 49ers building; it is such a lovely building.

I got a couple of nibbles and have sent them more information as well as Joannie's email address.

We did have a Gold Rush cheerleader come by one time last year; I think it was the same time that we had a special guest from the American Red Cross. Any way, the guys surely appreciated that. NO EXTRA CHARGE, either!

I'm hoping that we see JeffC again this year at our Booster Club dinners, as well as Rashad H (Bionic3). I saw Steve M on Tuesday evening (forgot his MB name).

Yes, but I'll bet that very FEW of them get a 49er player to enjoy for 2 hours! Talk about FEASTING! Only the nearby Booster Clubs get honored by having players visit, I'm pretty sure. Our club is just a few blocks down the street from the 49ers Facility, so they don't have far to go to get to Giovanni's Restaurant. It's a favorite haunt of 49er players for pizza and good Italian food.

Santa Clara Booster Club President Joannie Bassett said the event is one that her group looks forward to every season.

“We always purchase a table every year and we have a great time,” said Bassett. “It means a lot to us as fans to know these players appreciate us. I know everyone in my club enjoys this event. This starts off the football season. It doesn’t start without this.”

Taken from Chrissy Mauck's write-up on today's Kickoff Luncheon (www.49ers.com).

*****

Unfortunately, I was quite sick today at the Luncheon, but after a while I was able to make a few trips to visit Coaches Nolan, Turner, and Billy Davis; Bryant Young (who gave the invocation in place of the missing prelate), Jeff Ulbrich and Derek Smith, Dr. York, Tony Parrish (whom I caught as he passed our table, Brian Jennings, Mike Adams, and Mike Singletary and one of fave players since he was a rookie, Terry Jackson--(caught a wave from them as they passed our table). I also had a chance to chat with Gary Plummer and Joe Starkey, the "voice of the 9ers."

An interesting point that I can share--which nobody else at the Luncheon knows--was when I was talking with John York, he told me that the SF logo over the entryway door to the lobby is being upgraded this year. I had written a letter to him a year ago, remarking how drab the logo looks on a dull white background--with NO RED in it, as usual. So, I guess my comment fell into fertile ground and will bear fruit. :wahoo:

Quite a few 49er staff noticed that I was ill and checked to see if there was anything that they could do, including Michael Williams, Mktg Director, Shauna Standart of the 49ers Foundation, and Dr. York, himself. It was nice knowing that they cared, but I really missed my table hopping manoeuver where I visit all the Niners at each table. I was unable to do that this year, which was a huge disappointment. I collected a few warm hugs from a few players and the Head Coach. I had a chance to greet his wife, the cookie maker for the team.

I almost forgot. We had an unknown player, Bobby Harris (OL), at our table. He's a big dude! Very friendly. Said he weighed in at 279 that morn, but he looked heavier than that!

What impressed me is that every time a player (or a coach and above) saw me coming to their area, they rose to greet me. That is so gentlemanly, and I really appreciate that courtesy.

Being sick, I was unable to eat anything at the banquet, for fear of having to rush out suddenly to you know where. I did manage to eat a scoop of mashed potatoes and sip a little water. Expensive potatoes!!!

Niner Mom :clapping:

The mystery mischief-maker that ruined my health for the day was a couple of figs--which had probably begun to foment. Any way, as soon as I got back home, I went straight to my bed and slept for a while (on and off). Right now it is 10 pm and I'm feeling much better, thank you. I was able to keep down some chicken broth and rice tonight. I was pretty hungry, after fasting most of the day.

Now I can look forward to tomorrow's home game vs the Chargers at 7 pm. And then we are in the REGULAR SEASON.

Joannie Bassett, the President of our Santa Clara Booster Club, was interviewed by Chrissy Mauck (our Internet Director) while we were at the Kickoff Luncheon on Thursday (day before the game).

If you haven't seen the video of the interview, check it out, folks! That's the first time we made the headline news on the 49ers website home page.

I hope the members of the Message Board who belong to the Club already have seen it. HOT STUFF! :yahoo:

Two days after our first regular game will be our second 49er Dinner. We usually don't find out ahead of time which player will be our guest, but I'll let you know when I find out.

Joannie, our President, turned in a list of 10 guys, so that the 49ers will have some choices. My first choice would be Manny Lawson or Michael Robinson. I really like those 2 players a huge LOT (whatever that is).

I drove to the Fan Club today and got a lovely "gold" watch for $40 + tax (marked originally at $175). Not a bad buy! Oh, I forgot to mention that it is a 49ers (logo) watch. I also got a 60th anniversary patch and a 49ers steering wheel leather cover for $20 + tax. Not a bad day in wheeling & dealing! I got a 70% discount as a long-time customer and favorite 49er fan there.

I'm going to find out about the local artist who painted Steve Young's image in the large framed SIGNED red jersey that I bought. The artist lives in Modesto (I think) and teaches art in a college in Salinas (I think) a couple of days a week. WHAT A COMMUTE! My contact at the Fan Club will find out more about him for me before the store closes at the end of September. (I double checked the date for fans interested in bargain hunting for 49ers stuff.)

They have more Raiders stuff left than 49ers stuff, but you Barlow fans, they have a great framed picture of Kevan. It felt like an oil painting. And it's not too big (like the one I bought)--maybe half the size. There are still some jerseys hanging up high.

The guy at the store said he was expecting some 60th patches to arrive this week. I prepaid for mine, to be sure I'd get one. He didn't order a LOT, so if you want one, get on the ball...

Our September guest will be Eric Wright, one of the 49er Coordinators of the 49ers Alumni Association. We usually get current players from September through December, but it seems there is some event in SF that involves the 49ers on 9/12. So, instead of getting one of the active guys from the team this month, the Organization is sending us Eric Wright.

Here is a write-up from the 49ers Web-Site on Eric:

A second round selection in 1981, Eric Wright went in to play 10 seasons for the 49ers and was a two-time Pro Bowl selection at cornerback.
Eric is among the select group of 49ers who own four Super Bowl rings, winning Championships in 1981, 1984, 1988 and 1989. He also owns the unique distinction of recording an interception in three different Super Bowls.

Wright is involved in numerous projects around the Bay Area, including coaching youth basketball and serving as a consultant with high end money managers.

Although Eric is not a current player, I am sure that we will enjoy a visit with him this coming Tuesday, just 2 days after the Arizona game.

how was the dinner tonight?

Niner Jan
09-13-2006, 12:39 AM
Well, tonight was our second 49ers Booster Club Dinner meeting. Our guest, as expected, was 49ers Alumni Coordinator, Eric Wright, one of our former outstanding 49er Corners.

Eric arrived early and milled around among the Faithful members, teasing that we were loyal diehards like "Old Faithful." You know, the geyser up in Wyoming National Park, that regularly shoots up hot steaming vapors high into the air, with clock-work precision. And of course, our accurate timing is every SECOND TUESDAY of the month at 7 pm, rain or shine.

Eric chatted with us for quite a while, talking about our current team as well as about the players with whom he played. He has 4 SuperBowl rings to his honor that he helped earn in the defensive backfield.

I guess he is kept pretty busy coordinating community affairs with the alumni and public officials because he doesn't seem to be able to attend training camp like us privileged fans were invited to do. It's hard to remember that being a football player is a JOB--while to us, it's a whole exciting world that we love as our special hobby.

Eric's comments and explanations made me more aware of how hard the players have to work--not only physically (training, exercising, playing), but they really have little time during the season (and even during the post season) for a personal life. Thus, when a player is no longer on the team, he is so aware of the value of his SUNDAYS with his family, which is almost like a luxury when he under contract with a team.

I think we fans just seem to think their lives are all fun and games! They really have to make a lot of sacrifices all during their career to become and remain the BEST athletes they can be--like in the Army's slogan. Being a thinker by nature, I became more alerted to all that it entails to be a 49er.

Somebody in our club brought in a huge poster of Dwight Hicks, Ronnie Lott, Eric Wright, and Carl Williamson standing over a "sacrificial lamb"--obviously a (disguised) Cowboy half-buried in the grass and dirt. It was so comical. Excellent poster! Eric was the last to sign it, and he is going to get a copy of it made for himself for old-time's sake. You would have loved it!

We talked about all sorts of 49er things, and asked questions popping into our heads. Mine was about the helmet to helmet (under the chin) cheap shot that one AZ player took at TE Eric on Sunday; also I inquired about the hit to QB Alex's legs as he was going out of bounds. I wanted to make sure my hunches about those hits as illegal was correct.

Someone piped up that our Coach has forwarded tape to the NFL about those and several other incidences in AZ. That "holding call" was not as clear as a penalty than was called. So, even though the hands of the clock cannot go backward (to change anything), the corrections should help keep the refs more honest and on their toes.

Our Santa Clara 49ers Booster Club Chapter is starting up a website very soon; there are just last-minute tweakings being done. I will ask our expert helpers here to create a LINK so that you can contact the website when it is up. You will be able to fill out an application to join, should you so desire. It will make things happen seamlessly (I hope).

The Booster Club is such an outstanding opportunity to meet players and get to know them WELL: see their personality in different lights, learn about their background, family life, education, hopes and plans for the future, etc. You can't see their sense of humor or compassion on the field. And you get to ask questions bugging your curiosity, find out about their hobbies, fears, desires, interests, etc. So when they go out on the field on Sundays, you will know more about them as human beings, not just as mechanical football icons.

I was lucky tonight. I won the door prize! It was a shaggy white dog wearing cool shades with a windup key that plays, "Who let the dogs out?" It is certainly something I don't have among my stuff. I wonder what the kitty will think of it when she sees it tomorrow...I'll be curious about that!

Today was some kind of rally in the City for 49er players--BLITZ in the City. That's why we didn't get a current player. First time in all the years that I've been in the Booster Club that we couldn't get an active player. So, I'm hoping that we get one for the last 4 months instead (Walsh promised us 4 per year when he was with the 49ers).

We had so much food left over that we got to take some of it home. My roommate will enjoy the pizza, cheesecake, fresh cut-up fruit, and mushrooms in yummy garlicky sauce.

Oh, I almost forgot. Tonight again Shawntae Spencer came in to the pizza restaurant to pick up his order while we were there. I got up to greet him and took a picture with him. He loves the food at Giovanni's and said he often goes there. That must mean that he lives close by...

I'm looking forward to our next game against the Lambs...and to our next dinner meeting with our 49er special guest. You all don't know what you are missing! TWO HOURS with a 49er! I got my picture of him and me signed off (taken at the Gallo Chalk-Talk event last year). I enlarged it into a half-size (8x5) photo.

That's all for now, my friends. I hope you enjoyed the evening vicariously.

SF Forty Niners,

I'm glad you like Giovanni Pizzeria's New York pizza. I think you have company about their food, since the 49ers like to eat there. Twice now I have bumped into Shawntae Spencer stopping by to pick up his order; he loves the food there, too.

Now that you've discovered a new eatery, I hope you will join us next month for our October meeting (2nd Tuesday) on 10/10.

Question: Is November 19th the Jerry Rice day or the Steve Young day at the Stick? I was looking for the thread but couldn't find it. I have an offer of tix on the 50 yard line for 11/19. It's the Seattle game. I will provide the ticket if someone will be the driver that day--if that is the JR retirement day (at half-tiime).

PM me, please. I will have some extra tix that day in the upper reserve, too.

I'm thrilled that my Red Cross friend has provided me with tickets to the 11/19 game because since that is Jerry's ceremonial day, I wanted to be there in person to see the half-tiime entertainment. As you all know, we don't get to see the half-time celebrations at home on the TV.

So, I expect to be there--on the 50-yard-line (visitors side) Row 15 behind the visitors' bench (too bad it's not on the 49ers' side, but I can't be ungrateful for the opportunity of seeing the special JR ceremonies.

God must have heard my unspoken prayer to be there...  :yahoo:

(Fred, I hope you checked your PM's. I sent you information about the tix.)

I have an extra 2 tickets in the Upper Reserve for the Jerry Rice retirement ceremony on 11/19. If you are interested, PM me.

From the 3rd Row (Fred) thinks he has friends who want 2 of the 4 UR tickets, (so that's why I have 2 more available). Unless Fred has 4 friends who want to use all 4 of the tickets...

I have someone taking me to and from the Stick on 11/19, so that part is settled! I will bundle up and bring my radio to help me out with Joe Starkey/Gary Plummer calls & commentary on the game. (I need all the help I can get.)

So, I'm almost all set for November 19th game against Seattle. I wanted to be there for Jerry's retirement ceremony--and I got my wish!

I have found 2 more friends to use up the OTHER 2 tix to the Seattle game on 11/19 (Jerry Rice retirment). I'm glad. I'd hate to waste any good tix like those!

So, all 6 tix are taken now...

I have all the tix in hand now, as my Red Cross friend delivered them to me in person today--even though she just had some abdominal surgery this week. I was very impressed with her action and thought it was too soon that she got up and around after some (REAL) hernia surgery.

Niner Mom :shades: :ok:

Please read my latest post about the car vandalism at the Stick on the thread in this same segment. I want it known broadly among fans that some measure of action is being taken on that topic, even if it a preventive measure in the future.

It still needs a few minor changes and general polishing of rough edges, but it will be ready very, very soon! While still a work in progress - the Santa Clara Chapter of the 49ers Booster Club now has a web site to share information with members past, present and future.

Two tickets in the Upper Reserve are now available for the Jerry Rice retirement game on November 19: Section 41, Row 13, Seats 6 & 7--on the 45-yard line.

Somebody was supposed to use them, but hasn't responded yet. So, here's an opportunity for 2 other 49er fans to enjoy them.

Contact me by PM if you want to go to the game to see Jerry retire at half time. That's the Seattle game at the Stick! Will be a terrific game!

I wished we lived closer, as there is all kinds of neat stuff. We make a good deal of events, but it usually is a pretty good strain.

Now for the folks that live really close and miss this stuff, while I'm not attempting that standard "more fannier than though" that flys around, I do have to say "what are you thinking!?"

Getting back to the reason that this thread is pinned, the 49ers Booster Club of Santa Clara, our guest on Tuesday night will be Shawntae Spencer. He had made 2 "cameo appearances" (quite unplanned--because he came in both times to pick up his food order on nights that we had our Booster Club dinner at the pizzeria/restaurant where we meet).

Well, he finally is on schedule! Looking forward to getting to know more about our premier corner.

On the previous screen, (page 5), Fred gave a link to our Booster Club, so give it a look!

Tomorrow I'm going to the 49ers Facility with some flowers. Our guys played hard and smart today, especially the defense with 5 picks! (or was it 4?) And a blocked kick! (Roman should have had one more, too.)

That calls for flowers, I'd say. If I go around noon, I might bump into the coach getting ready for his press conference...

What a terrific time we had tonight with Shawntae! Someone was teasing him about his learning Merton Hank's chicken dance, since he has such a long neck like old Merton. Actually, though that was such a funny thing to watch, I kind of worry about Shawntae's durability doing that rolling neck thingy! But I guess I worry for naught...Heavens! there are enough REAL monsters to slay without inventing MORE non-existing nightmares...

There were a lot of questions and answers tossed back and forth. But before Spencer opened up the floor to them, he confirmed in no uncertain terms how much the enthusiasm of the FANS meant to the team's performance: The louder the cheering got, the more the guys hustled on the field. He really emphasized this to us.

I wanted to suggest that the 49ers "CAN" the fan noise and play it back when the team is not playing at home. That way, the Faithful could go along on the road trips to bolster their spirits and energy level. Wouldn't that be great!

One of the most fascinating things that Spencer shared with us was called Nolan's "magic package." I hope I'm not destroying the efficacy of our secret weapon employed in Sunday's game, but it was a very clever ploy. (Fred, let me know if I should delete it.)

It's like a scrambling device (call). You might recall seeing it on Sunday against the Raiders. EACH defensive guy starts shifting around (anywhere), shifting his position before settling in to where he is supposed to be--which causes HAVOC to the QB (because he doesn't know what in the heck kind of play is going to take place, since everyone is scrambling around). You may remember that on Sunday, the QB had to call a couple of timeouts because he couldn't tell what kind of formation was intended, and what offensive play to call. I think that's hilarious! And VERY clever of Mr. Nolan! :towel:

I asked Spencer about the mental attitude and spirit of Antonio Bryant, since some have been concerned about his losing his temper. He said that he was doing fine and really wants to contribute to the team. Furthermore, Shawntae added that there are leaders on the team who help keep heated situations under control. He specifically referred to QB Dilfer, who knows that his job is to help counsel various players--not just Alex Smith. So, Trent is more like an assistant to any players who need his wise counsel in order to keep the peace and perform their duties more precisely and professionally. I think that is an unusual circumstance, and it's working well! :ok:

Shawntae said he felt that the group of players gathered in the locker room is very unique in the way that they want to correct their mistakes on the field and how the relate to one another. They are eager to improve and work hard to get better all the time. He felt there was a special working camaraderie among the players. That was reassuring to hear as an outsider--no T.O. destroying the rapport.

Nolan & Co sure know how to pick guys who not only have athletic ability, right work ethics, but have the right attitude (what we've been calling QUALITY players). It's paying off in difficult times--which is when you most need them to pull together, not separately. :worthy:

Spencer did a very generous thing tonight--no actually, TWO things. He gave back the stipend to the Booster Club, and when Joannie insisted he take at least $200, he finally relented and donated the balance back to the Club. That is the first time that has ever happened that I know of. He is not a top-paid player, so that was unexpected and kind of him.

I said he did 2 things. The second was to bring and donate for auctioning off a ball signed by the entire team and staff of coaches. I wanted so much to have it, so I put in a bid for $300, then $350, but I was finally outbid by our Club's webmaster and the MB's Tailgating master chef, Mr. 3rd Row! So, I missed owning the team-signed ball by a hair! At least it went to the best person who really deserved it...

A 49ers watch that I had donated to the Club was bought by a youngster who was dying to have it, so I let him "steal" it for a pittance. He really wanted to have it with all his heart, so what the heck! It found a new owner who would truly appreciate it. After all, what's a 49ers Booster Club for, if not to delight the heart of a kid?

I was going to bring flowers over to the 49ers Facility to celebrate our victory over our Bay Area rivals, but instead today I wrote to every player I could think of who did something special in Sunday's game that directly contributed to our winning that game. I also wrote to Larry Allen, telling him how much we missed his experience and strength in anchoring the OL, especially since our next game will be a TOUGH one (Chargers).

I put all the cards (about a dozen, I'd say) into a small fancy bag and put it in Shawntae's care to deliver to the lobby (or to each player), as he saw fit. He said he would take care of it. I just wanted each player to know how important his contribution was to the WIN. Hopefully, the effort will work and duplicate in intensity next weekend to rack up another "W", though that will take more than a "magic package" to carry off.

Sorry, this is getting too long, so I'll end it now with a sigh of content and JOY in this Niner Mom's heart. :shades:

I don't know HOW you can NOT want to meet ANY 49er. I guess that makes you a football fan, but not a 49er fan at this time.

I don't agree with your philosophy, but you have a right to yours. Maybe it's just a matter of being so disappointed in lack of WINS that you don't want to meet any of the players. That's probably a male point of view--which I obviously don't share.

I love our 49ers--win or lose! It's obvious that we are being outmatched by some very good teams this season: Philadelphia, Kansas, San Diego, Chicago. All our players can do is give their BEST--and if that's not enough, then we fans cannot expect MIRACLES.

We have to face reality as it exists. We don't have the super athletes that we had during the Championship years, but that doesn't mean that we have to DESPISE our players. That's not what being a Niner FAITHFUL means. If they were not putting out every ounce of fight they have within them, then I could sympathize with your feelings.

We will have to support our team in bad time as in good times; otherwise, we are bandwagon fans, who glory in the outcome of the struggle and not in the JOURNEY of the season. Loyalty and patience is expected for the duration of this season until the offseason and the Draft allow us to replace less talent with more talent.

I will love our 49er players today, tomorrow, and forever! :boxing:

Today being Halloween, I decided to add some joy and cheer to the 49ers Lobby. So, I bought 2 red edged in yellow chrysanthemum plants potted in 2 nice baskets, then added some loving red and gold balloons to make the lobby festive; some of the balloons had sayings on them, like Congrats, I Love You, You are the Best, You are Special.

The potted plants were for RB Frank Gore and QB Alex Smith. I thought they needed a good shot in the arm for how well they are doing to try to win the game for us fans.

I also filled a SF bowl with packages of 4 kinds of wrapped cookies: banana, lemon, chocolate, and peanut butter + individually wrapped Butterfinger mini bars and cookies.

I was rewarded with a visit from Anthony Adams and Marcus Maxwell (PS). It was already 4 pm, so I didn't expect to see 49er players. I collected two big bear hugs for my efforts. My favorite security guard, Dario, was there at the time, and I met a new "relief person" (who sounded like someone who worked upstairs!).

The boys are off on Tuesdays, but some go in just for rehabs and workouts, any way. So, tomorrow they will all see the colorful balloons, plants, and goodies. Tomorrow is probably a full-pad practice day. Those cookies may come in handy!

Also, he told me that the players "destroyed" the cookie/candy treats that I left for them in the lobby. I guess with full pads on today, they must have had a few hunger pains...just as look as they don't turn into dental pains!

Well, here goes another 49er visit to their quarters!

I bought gorgeous deep red flowers and pale yellow ones and made up my own floral vase. Last minute contrasting touch: "threw" in wheat sheaves--just the thing to make it outstanding! My friend was astounded what I did when the arrangement, but it was fun. A mother's loving touch tossed in for free along with a handmade glittering metallic bow to set it off!

Of course, no floral bouquet is incomplete without the red & gold balloons and special ones with messages, too. I wrote outstanding players' names on the plain red & gold balloons with special KUDOS to the DEFENSE!

I wonder if I'll bump into any 49ers today when I deliver the red & gold flower arrangement. Just waiting for the "chauffeur" to arrive now so I can handle the flowers and balloons while she drives.

Well, folks, this is going to knock your socks off or your eyes out...but our next Booster Club dinner guest on 12/12 is going to be...

Vernon Davis

Regular club members had better plan to arrive much earlier than usual to guarantee themselves a seat! This dinner is going to be crowded, folks! I wonder if Vernon will bring along a buddy...

*******

Tonight's dinner guest was veteran FB Chris Hetherington. I didn't realize he had played in the NFL for so many years. His hinges will start to screech soon if he doesn't keep them well oiled. :gathering:

Like teammate Eric Johnson, Chris also graduated from Yale. He played QB in college. If I recall accurately, he has played for the Bengals, the Rams, the Raiders, and the Panthers. I may have missed one; I'll have to check his bio again to be sure.

When he arrived early, Chris was milling around, chatting with the club members, so I went up to greet him, wondering if he knew who I was. He did. He greeted me by name. (I'm always amazed how many MORE 49ers know me than I know them by sight, and that includes personnel from the Organization.

What a nice idea to give our guys a loving sendoff by your presence. I did that one time, and it was great seeing all the guys in their SUITS boarding the bus for that trip.

The time between these 2 road games (St. Louis and New Orleans) is so very SHORT--just 4 days. Too bad they have to come back home and depart again. It would be nice if they could stay in the area and practice there instead of all that useless traveling back & forth...

Val,

That would be great if you could come to meet Vernon. If you really think you can make it and INTEND to attend the dinner, I have to let our president know so she can add you to the dinner count by Sunday. She pays for the number of place settings she orders by Sunday evening or early Monday morning.

So, you need to be fairly sure that you plan to come. Dinner costs $30 for members and $35 for non-members of the Booster Club. (The $5 extra is part of the membership fee which pays for the stipend to the player.)

Let me know by Sunday what you decide to do and I will notify Joannie if you will be coming.

Looking forward to see you at Giovanni's Pizzeria in Santa Clara. I will PM you the directions if you definitely will be coming--as soon as you notify me.

Tonight, we had a wonderful dinner experience with Vernon Davis and his younger brother, Vonte' (sp?).

I was surprised at how low-key Vernon was when he got up to talk to us Booster Club members. I always thought he was of a more fiery disposition because he is such a fierce player. But was I ever wrong! He came across as rather timid; maybe he is not used to addressing small groups of fans.

I was sitting in the first row of tables after the main table, actually right in front of Vernon. He thanked me warmly for my Christmas card and its personal message, saying that he never expected to get a card with a hand-written message inside before from someone he didn't really know.

I had 3 8x10 photos of him and my 49ers flag signed by him. I also took a picture with him and his brother on either side of me. Then I snapped a few more shots of him laughing and talking to us, as well as another of him and his brother speaking to the group, good-naturedly kidding mutually. Anyone could see how protective he is of his "little" brother. Vernon is the oldest of 7 children: 3 boys, 4 girls. Vonte' already has gotten honors in his Freshman year of football, as well as a scholarship. So, he is following in his big brother's footsteps.

Next to speak to us was the VP of Communication, Lisa Lang. I was happy to finally meet her personally; she knew who I was! (Word gets around, you know.) She talked about the stadium and the steps they were going through. The Booster Club mostly all live in the South Bay Area, so we are tickled pink that the 49ers' stadium could be built in their back yard! There was a lot of questions and answers bantered back and forth, including remarks about what some of the politicians were doing. The negative publicity generated by the City of SF needs to be countered by positive input by fans, so Lisa promised to get information to us as to what persons we could write to or if a bus load of fans going to Sacramento would help change the tide in favor of the 49ers and the bulk of the fans who live outside the City. I suggested a press conference for fans to speak up! She liked that! I'm not good at extemporaneous speeches, but my passion for the 49ers might help me overcome that public timidity.

Lisa is going to keep us better informed by email. I believe she said the organization may be setting up a special website for stadium informational purposes.

Finally, a third person, Kerry, who works for Lisa, spoke to us about special events. There was an open discussion well participated in by members of how fund-raising events lately seemed aimed at corporations, with costs rising on a high-scale, precluding ordinary fans from being able to afford the events. Various suggestions were mentioned and will be discussed with the powers at 4949.

Someone asked about the Gallo Wine Chalk-Talk event, which was held at the 49ers Facility in the past few years, and the question was answered that it had been offered during the earlier Family Day held at the stadium. Since I cannot drive in SF because of the hills, the distance, and the tangle of unfamiliar freeways, I recommended that the Football 101 be returned to the 49ers Facility in Santa Clara for the future. Kerry told me she had heard some very nice things about me at the 49ers Facility.

All in all, it was a very lively meeting and gave many of us the opportunity of knocking around a few ideas. I loved Vernon and I'm sure that everyone else did, too! Next meeting in January will be on my birthday! What a nice birthday gift. January is reserved for 49er alumni guests.

Thanks for the correct spelling of his brother's name. It was just a guess on my part.

No, I didn't see what car Vernon was driving; I was already inside the restaurant when they came in. I had Christmas cards to distribute, so I had to arrive early enough for that little deed.

Funny thing happened to me on the way to the restaurant. I left at 5:30 to arrive in plenty of time to get a front row seat near the head table. Well, I must have beat the traffic on Central Expwy because I got to the exit for Lawrence Expwy so fast, I MISSED IT! I had to go all the way to Great America to Tasman, then up Tasman toward 101 (1 block before). That's a long way about, correcting my mistake. I could have taken 101, but I was afraid I'd go the wrong direction on Lawrence...Silly of me, I know. Oh well, all's well that ends well.

This coming Tuesday, January 9th, our last dinner guest of the year will be Guy McIntyre, who has been one of the 49er Alumni Coordinators until recently until job description changed.

Here's what is printed about him in 49ers website under Team/ALUMNI Board:

A fixture at right guard wearing his familiar #62, Guy McIntyre is the proud holder of three Super Bowl Championship rings. After a tremendous collegiate career at the University of Georgia, Guy was selected by the 49ers in the third round of the 1984 NFL draft. He spent 10 seasons with San Francisco and was a five-time Pro Bowl selection.

McIntyre has served as a coaching assistant with the 49ers during mini-camps and training camps since 1999. Over that same time he has also coached the offensive line at Division III Menlo College.

He has always welcomed me each time I came across him (which is often) in the 49ers lobby.
