Because he has been unable to recover from a serious injury that he re-injured while trying to come back from once already. He announced his retirement last week, after failing to make several clubs he tried out for this season.

was a top 5 guard in THE ENTIRE LEAGUE, still YOUNG, still has that potential,

a pro bowler,

not injury prone

can play CENTER very well

why havent the 49ers, or anyone else for that matter, signed him?

he had a staph infection and some bad timing with it after his injury, thats what kept him out

I guess he hasn't "officially" retired, but it appears he's done in the NFL.

Bentley has busted wheels. He tore his ACL on the first day of camp with CLE when he signed with them. Then that fall his repaired knee had a serious staph infection he fought for what was several months. It was so bad it took 2 operations to clean out and then if I remember correctly, he had to get a new ACL put in completely because the first implant was ruined. He was out 2 full years and has had a near impossible time coming back. That infection just ate away a lot of his inner knee and he's been off that leg for years, the atrophy is not easy to overcome at 29.

Why would they bring in an interior lineman, they have 6 already. All but 1 ( Wragge, who is a RFA, and will probably be resigned as a backup ) under contract for next year. With ages 27 ( Baas ), 22 ( Rachal ), 29 ( Wragge ), 26 ( Snyder-Who will be a backup tackle ), 23 ( Wallace ), 28 ( Heitmann ).

Throw in Staley ( 24 ). A top 40 draft pick next year at Tackle. The team doesn't need any large changes at line, they need coaching and time to develop and gel the youth and potential.

You crazy people and your free agent lineman, can't see the forest for the trees.

Im not crazy, I would just like a good backup for cheap especially if were testing the idea of Rachal at RT,
Heitmann is resigned but not exactly a top center, and cody wallace gets tossed around like a piece of paper, and did so in college as well

We'd have a shot at possibly getting an excellent run blocking guard or at least a very good center. If he cant hold up, we at least tried to fix the problem. Yes we have several interior lineman but not one who is exceptional

The ship has sunk, putting some ideas into trying to right it does not make me crazy. I don't say any dumb or crazy things on this board . I did not ask for Deangelo Hall, I don't legitimately think we can trade for Tom Brady and I'm not saying that we have a good qb. I dont realistically see us getting Cowher, I dont want Pete Carroll, and I supported Nolan even when he was failing because he was our coach. and I do not see why giving a 29 yo former pro bowler at a position of need a look see (because we already have players) for cheap money is a bad idea. If your going to give me reasons why I am crazy then give me a viable one other than we already have guards and centers

Staley is a capable tackle and played better as a RT but that doesnt mean that we leave it be and let him get thrown out of the way and NOT pass protect which is his job just because he was a first rounder.

I'd say injury prone is an understatement after what he's been through.

Too bad, I really wanted him when the left the Saints.

The fact that you think a Deangelo Hall pick up is crazy, yet a Bentley pick up is good, sort of implies your craziness. A Bently pick up is outlandishly crazy, he can't even make a roster. Hall was just super overpaid.

Staley is in his 2nd year, his 24th game! Everyone on the line has room for improvement, but this is how you build a line. Please name all the free agent lineman moves in the last 5 years that any of the good lines have made. The only one I can think of is Hutchinson who cost a small fortune and sure hasn't brought the Vikings to the next level. All the good lines are grown from the draft, with good development, good chemistry, and good scheming. It will take time.

If you can't trust the coaches to develop these high picks and scheme well with them, then it wouldn't matter if you picked up 5 all pros, let alone one oft injured washed up one. Jonas Jennings anyone? How about Larry Allen?

All valid points. I can see the points from other posters, as he is a risk, but the biggest problem is probably two fold. One, he wants paid, and two, he wants a guaranteed starting spot. He had a chance to sign somewhere this offseason (Detroit I think) but he wanted handed a starting spot. I'd bet he wants in the 3-5 Mil/yr range as well. Awful lot to demand for a guy with bad knees and no playing time the lats 2 years. If we could get him cheap and work him in slow, then I'd say go for it.

Word has it that Bently has priced himself out of a job in the NFL. He still wants the money of a pro bowl caliber player, but most teams are hesitant to sign him at all due to recent severe injury issues.

At the price Bently has put on himself, I don't think he's a very good deal for anyone. He's going to have to accept that he'll need to work his way back and prove himself before he's going to get huge money. I think there is a thread for this guy on every teams message board. Obviously there is a huge problem because the one thing that all 32 NFL Teams seem to have in common is that none of them want this guy.
