Barlow, Cedric Houston, Derrick Blaylock and rookie Leon Washington are all in the mix to replace the injured Curtis Martin as the Jets' No. 1 running back. ... coach Eric Mangini plans -- for now -- to use all four in the season opener at Tennessee.

...

Many assumed he would be named the Jets' starter when the deal was made.

"You can't really say that," Barlow said.

I just thought it was interesting on how a former 49er was doing.

It's not unreasonable to think he won't start, considering he hasn't been in the Jets offense for very long. But at the same time, it's another example of Barlow not making the impression a full time starter should.

he only had one game in the preseason for them, the next game they kept him and most of their starters out.

i don't think it's about him not making an impression but more along the lines of Mangini not knowing which player on his roster can make plays in a game as really none of them have much experience.

While I agree with you, Barlow is actually a 6 year vet, who once called himself "the future". You'd think a guy who once was so confident in his abilities would be a bit more confident that he can handle the starting job.

While it's good to seem him take a team approach now, I just wonder if he still sees himself as "the future" in NY, or if his confidence has been blown by getting traded after two disappointing seasons.

I have to assume this is due to there being a settling in process. He has not been there that long, is going to have to get used to running behind a different line and with a new QB.

In time if he can return to his former self he will be their starter without a doubt. If not he will be gone after next years draft. I really hope that being traded will light a fire in his gut and get him going again.
