Smiley was absolutely pitiful the past two seasons. I'm glad he's gone. Soft as a marshmallow.

Miss him? Write him a letter and send him some chocolates if so.

Not at all. He's ok, but he was utilized poorly here anyway. Wrong scheme. Would have been stupid to keep him around.

Yeah, and he's not great down in miami, it's not like we gave up an amazing player or anything.

He was good, nothing special.

Its so funny. We laughed at his contract demand and 3 months later it looked like a bargain. I would put not agreeing to that contract in the top 10 things we need a takeback from in the Nolan era.

no. good guy and all, but he was too small and lacked the muscle to deal with the opposition. he just couldn't win many one on one battles.

He was quietly becoming one of the better guards in the league...I don't know what you're all talking about.

No. I thought he was a bit over-rated in his pulling (he missed too many people in the open field) and had no drive blocking in him. He also seemed to be injury prone. Not as bad as Jennings. But even when he was suiting up every week, he'd have long periods of shoulder difficulties that limited his ability to deal with the DTs well. Plus he, more than once, got set on his butt by bull-rushing DTs.
He did good things too. He was good as a left guard. Especially against quick DTs.
So, over-all, I think he's okay. But I don't think he's special. Not enough to miss him.
And, bottom line, I like Baas and Rachel better. I think Rachel will be special. I think all the whiners that bagged on the front office for picking him have shown us that they were fools rushing to judgement. The guy only gave up one sack in nine games and was a crushing drive blocker with a good head on his shoulders (picked up the offense and didn't make a penalty). It was an outstanding rookie campaign, and I think far better than what Smiley accomplished his first two years in the NFL.
As for Baas, once Warhop and Nolan were taken out of the picture and Baas was put in the line-up, things got much better. Baas didn't give up a sack and was a mauler in the run game. He needs some technique work still, but he's definitely a 'big ugly' who has the ability to crush DTs and control the LOS.
I'll be interested to see what happens with these two when we get an OC that is (a) competent and (b) uses his players to the their talents, not his scheme.

He was getting better with us, then left. Now he's a solid starter, and he's still getting better.
He started lower than expectations, and therefore never met the expecations on time, so he was considered a bust. But in reality, he was just starting at a lower point. Plus we had a ****ty team with a ****ty coach. I bet he would be a starter with us today, and even our O-line star in a couple years.

Maybe we did last year (which wasn't surprising, Smiley was never a guy anyone was anxious to lose)...
With that said, I think Baas and Rachal have a higher ceiling.

I don't miss Smiley but it certainly shows how behind the curve Nolan was in that regard.

Yes, I wish we could have resigned him but not for the price he was asking. Yes, he was a tough player that often left DT's battered and bruised. He was slow to react stunts and complex blitz packages so he surely wasn't worth the $$$ he wanted. Of course, he was still better than most of the girl scouts that we have had on the OL since '03. Hopefully Baas starts to realize his potential ( It's about stinking time) and Rachal does the same. It's been pathetic to watch our OL get mauled for the majority of the last 5 years.
