Chargers | Las Vegas calls
Thu, 27 Apr 2006 06:05:33 -0700
Ronald W. Powell, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman contacted the San Diego Chargers this week about the possibility of beginning talks that could end with relocating the Chargers to Las Vegas. The Chargers responded with a letter informing Goodman that their lease with San Diego prohibits them from talking with other cities until Jan. 1. Goodman said Wednesday, April 26, that he is not deterred. Goodman's overture came as a result of the announcement last week by San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders that he supports allowing the Chargers to explore relocating to other cities in the county in the team's pursuit of a new stadium.

this is an interesting possibility. 3 of the canidates moving to Los Angeles are the Chargers, Vikings and Saints. All of those teams i wouldn't mind out here in LA.

As of today my vote is for the Saints. I would love to see Reggie play. And I am sure he would love to come back home.

oscar can try all he wants but we know there's not going to be an nfl team in vegas for a few years...
Agreed but I think it is cool that, that seed has been planted and was not summarily rejected with torches and pitchforks.
i hope vegas gets a team. one of my fav cities in the world, sweetest city imo.

That will hurt Las Vegas Sports books.. If they move to Las Vegas you won't be able to bet on the Chargers there. All the local teams in Vegas are not listed to wager on.
I don't think that the :money: lost from the 8 games that people can't bet on are going to hurt the casinos all that much. You have to figure a large number of the people that these games will draw in will stay more than one night… It is Vegas! People will be sitting at the tables and machines. They will be dining and using the spas. They will be retail shopping and seeing shows while they are here. Trust me. If Vegas gets a team the casinos will make their :money: on it one way or another.

I do not see any team moving to vegas. they can use it as a threat to where they are at but I don't think you will get one team there. It is hard enough to controll por players right now, put them in that town! The NBA is having there All-Star Game there but there will be no betting on that one. I would think that if the any team went ther you would not be able to bet on any of there games. They would never host a Super Bowle. I do not even see a team moving back to L.A. heck they could not even get an expantion team! It is just another place to hold out there and use as ransom. I don't like the Raiders and I think they got screwed by L.A.. They do not support a team unless it is the in thing to do or it is the place to be seen at.

I have to disagree.
There are the following in almost every town:
Bars
Nightclubs
Restaurants
Strip Clubs
Casino within driving distance (Indian casinos and river boats)
Las Vegas will have no more distractions, temptations or effect on players and staff than New York, Miami, San Francisco, LA, New Orleans or any other big/tourist city.
There are many other collage, pro and semi pro teams here and they function without incident almost ever year. Lets not forget that there is almost no city in the country that can match Las Vegas for revenue, privet investment and facility space in the country.

that's a good point, but in addition to there's also the spending that players do that ends up helping the local community as well as the business ventures that some of the vets take part in...i.e. Seau's in San Diego.
From that aspect it's like Oscar's plan/and ability to bring in that Furniture maker that is off of the 15 and charleston.
Nice addition. You are 100% correct.
Hmmm 15 and Charleston? I am not sure where it would go unless they are taking just a practice facility.

No way a league that worries about celebrations and uniforms lets a team go to a city like vegas. Thats just asking for it

The problem with LA is everyone who is there is not from there. Go to any game of the Dogers, Angles, or Clippers. They are there to see the other team. L.A. has never had a team of there own. Everyone has moved there and out. I think the Dogers will be the only one that does not since they are the only team in the area that ownes there stadium. The Rams were run into the ground so they would not be supported by the fan base. Georga wanted to take the team to St. Louis since she got the team. Everytime she had a player that was doing good and up for a new contract she would let them go. When the rams got cloes to winning season in 1989 she let the whole team go. The Rams would not even open up the parking lot until 10:00 A.M..

omg, life has to be crazy as an NFL player, i couldnt even imagine the ***** you would get into being an NFL player in Vegas. The franchise would probably be plagued by a ton of gambling scandals, but it would be fun to watch.
Chargers to Vegas:towel:
Saints to Los Angeles:sam:

TIZ, you're the man. :respect:
Seriously I hate it when people from outside of the LA area try and criticizes us. I live in Riverside. I am **** sure that a team would be supported. Were you originally from SoCal, you sure do know your stuff.
Hey, hey... relax guys.
I think knobs makes the statement about LA solely based on its "fame". Why is that?
#1: Raiders and Rams left town.
#2: The Dodgers, even in some good seasons, do not top the list of attendance.
#3: Dodgers fans are all about coming to the stadium late and leaving early. Of course you can't measure that and translate it to the NFL because all NFL games are on Sunday morning, meaning that people are not in a rush to go back home.
I'm torn on this subject. On one side, you have the second largest market of the USA locked up in the L.A. area, but on the other hand, how many chances do they need to prove they deserve a franchise?
I'd say no to L.A.
Fame... trendy... that's what I meant. :hide:
NFL is not moving a team to Vegas... If anything Arizona may get a pro team first..
And Phill.... nah, why bother...
I agree.

I am envoking my powers to reject this, or any attempt by the Chargers to move from San Diego. It is now a moot point- it will no longer happen.
My in-laws live in San Diego, and any such move will kill my ability to see semi-annual preseason games, and the once-every-eight-years regular season game.
No way will I allow that to happen. :spy:

calling bull**** on the guy from Kern county....yes L.A. has a vast number of migrators like alot of other cities do but it has a vast number of people that were born and raised in the area. It's easy to see when someone doesn't understand the area talks about it because they ignore the outlaying communities that make up the los angeles area in addition to orange county and going out towards riverside county.
You don't even know where Kern County is! I am less 2 hours from Los Angeles. I go to Dodger Stadium and Angels games. I go there to see the Giants and A's. I have good friends who work for both L.A. County and City Fire Departments who came from other states who go to games to see there home teams. When the home team is winning yes L.A. supports them. 95% of the time you can go to the gate and by a tickets for a game on the day of the game.

Saints to Los Angeles:sam:
if the saints do move, do you think the nfl would move them into the west and move the rams into the south?

forgive me, Im not from the area, just asking questions..
Hasn't USC been just about as close to a pro team as a college team can ever be? and filling up the LA Coliseum every game?
Personally, Id like to see a team in LA, mostly because it feels wierd to have a rivalry with the city of St. Louis even if it is the $#$% Rams, and I want the SF/LA rivalry in football back!
GO GO GOOD GUYS! :sflogo:

seriously, do a search of USC tickets on ebay and look at the prices they're asking.. they don't even know where their seats will be yet!
LA fans will go to NFL games, this isn't the same LA as the 80's and there are more people too. Plus the NFL seems to be the dominant sport in the country today.
I don't know what would happen if theyt tried to bring two teams at once, but one team should do fine.

I think the Governator has lost his gord. LA couldn't support 2 teams last time. Heck, they couldn't support one. I've never been there, but with USC & UCLA being as prominent as they are I think fans tend to take more of an interest in NCAA football than the NFL. All of the hoopla with BUSH, LEINART, & Lendale White provides some support with this in conjunction with the NFL DRAFT. All of this, not to mention that there are 3 prominent teams already in the state of California from which the LA fanbase can choose to root for: the 49ers, Raiders, or Chargers. I know that the former haven't been competitive since 2002, but in the NFL a team can be built fast and fall apart just as fast. I suggest taking USC and making them the LA expansion team.

I seriously doubt two teams would work. All it would do is split the fan-base. They should give the people one choice and they will fallow like sheep.

It would be great to have a team back in L.A.
Can someone tell me from a local standpoint... why would the Rose Bowl not work compaired to Anaheim or the L.A. Collesium?
Couldn't they renovate it?

The locals in the area don't want the Sunday traffic caused by a filled (yeah I said filled) stadium. I thought they dropped out of the bidding until I heard they had a representative in Dallas for the owners meeting. They are an extreme long shot.

I like the idea of a brand new stadium next to the ballpark in Anaheim.
Do locals like the idea of that or do they want more downtown?
The idea of a new one built inside the L.A. Memorial Collisium is strange but I think Soldier Field did something like that... new with some of the old history still there.
