With free agency around the corner, it would be great to see the 9ers pick up Peppers... IF this is done then the draft becomes extremely interesting. With Peppers we could have the most dominant pass rush in the West with Justin Smith/ Julius Peppers on the ends. Not to mention i believe P.Haralson will pick up where he left off last year; he is on the rise. With the pass rush taken care of via free agency, we'd be able to keep options WIDE open at the draft. I say Vontae Davis(CB), Ray Magualga(LB-and i know i probly spelt that completely wrong), or if he falls to the 10th pick, Michael Crabtree(WR). Finally, i believe if we had that threat pass rusher, it would definately create the oppertunity foR turnovers which we lacked EXTREMELY last year. LOL he'd even make Mark Roman look SLIGHTLY better. slightly

Even with Peppers we still need a big NT to hold the point and push the pocket, otherwise we still won't be able to stop anyone on short yardage and goal line situations. But I definitely support the idea of adding Peppers. If we sign Peppers then I believe that Rajii would be the best case scenario for us in the draft. That or a RT.

He'd still be better than anything that we have at the position.

Can but won't they need to retain their starting OT Gross I believe. But if they can sign him to a deal that opens the tag up for Peppers.

I agree, we take Raji and get Peppers and we are looking good. I think we can get our O lineman in the second.

When do we address offense then? Every off-season, we sign a big name defensive player.

My thoughts from another thread:
I don't get why everyone is so in love with the idea of Peppers.
I mean, I'd love to have his pass rushing abilities, but IMO he is a significant risk for two reasons:
1. He can be a bit streaky. Don't forget about his abysmal 2007 campaign.
2. He wants to change positions, or at least, "roles". That alone could limit his effectiveness.
He'll command something in the $9-12M/year range. Considering the above and his age, I just don't know if that's worth it.
I think we'd be better served taking a top prospect at #10 and calling it a day.

I would be overjoyed if the 9ers got Peppers...but it is not a need. The 49ers have an improving pass rush and have other needs to fill first, including beefing up the OL to give our QB's some time in the pocket. We have problems getting beat in the secondary which needs to be addressed.

We don't need to take Raji, if we get Peppers (who wants to play LBer) we'd have a chance to come away with some key positions. We could trade down and grab Rey or trade out for an extra 2nd. I'd like to walk away with Brace and Chung. Getting Peppers would mean instant pass rush, so Brace would be a good pick because he doesn't have to do anything fancy, just take on doubles. We maybe against shelling out top ten money for a space eater.

True. I like Peppers, but like you said he can be a bit streaky. If we keep with our defensive scheme it might be a bit of an adjustment for Peppers who has never played in a 3-4 a majority of the time. Even though we were in a nickel defense a lot, if the 3-4 is the direction we're going towards, well I just don't like the idea of gambling on Peppers.

Peppers is an athletic freak, he has the speed and pass rush ability to stand up if he can shed some weight. It's much better to have a proven pass rusher, then the inconsistent play of Lawson.

wouldn't Suggs be better? He will cost less and has experience as an OLB in a 3-4, something Peppers wouldn't.

He just said in a sideline interview that he wanted to play in a 3-4 defense.
